80s style synth-pop/electro synth/cyberpunk music

Wait GTA 5's original soundtrack is from Tangerine Dream? That would explain why it sounds so fucking legit.

BTW tangerine Dream did gta5?!?!? Wow

Yeah, and considering they also made the soundtrack to one of the best Heist movies of all time its only fitting :D very similar soundscape, check out THIEF:

Holy shit at the TD contribution to the GTA5 score... never saw that coming.

Only thing about TD is that Edgar (Froese) and his various collaborators have churned out so much material over the years its kind of difficult to know where to begin, and then there's of course stuff that he's put out under his own name, which is also essential.

Rather than pick out specific albums, its probably best to find which one of TD's periods sounds best to you; check out the discography on tangerinedream.org to for a breakdown and start from there.

Just wanted to report back as I have watched Thief for the first time last weekend. I had wanted to see it for a long time, but it's possible your post gave me that extra nudge to finally pull the trigger.

Well, it's a very good movie. You can tell how influential it was on stuff like Drive, GTA V, etc.

As expected, the soundtrack is fantastic. My only slight disappointment is that the climactic scene was not scored by Tangerine Dream. The actual music they used for that part is quite effective, but it would have been nice to get the TD version of that moment. Instead we get an excellent piece of music from Craig Safan that sticks out from the rest of the score. To be fair, there's no way to know if TD could have done better.

Btw, fuck the Razzie Awards for nominating Thief for Worst Musical Score. How shortsighted of them.

I'm going to see Magic Sword tonight. It is always a kickass show. His album isn't out yet, but he's got a soundcloud page. One of my roommates is doing the projections for the show and my best friend is working on a companion comic book to launch with the album.

I've actually been revisiting a LOT of Tangerine Dream's work since I heard they were working on GTAV, and I really enjoy a lot of their periods from the early long form Berlin School stuff, all the way to the 80s films scores, and the more melodic electro-rock-synth material in the years after. There's good stuff throughout the years.

If you want to get back to most of the italodisco and spacesynth this genre is built on, here's some pretty good selections.

This video isn't cyberpunk but the visuals definitely are. This channel is full of night videos of Metropolitan Tokyo.

Yeah, liking the new Lazerhawk album. Not so keen on the edgy metal-pleb cover but it's thematic I guess.

King of the Streets makes wish I could drive.
