Apple's June 10 WWDC keynote may happen at the same time as Microsoft's E3 presser

They won't, like they haven't in years past.

They'll undoubtedly be liveblogging both and both will feature prominently on their front page. Or does the Verge only have one reporter?

People interested in Apple will be reading about Apple. Those interested in games will be reading about games. There's no competition. GT won't be covering the Apple conference, they'll be covering E3, just like virtually every other gaming site.

It's like people have lost all their ability to exercise critical thinking these past few days. The amount of BS being posted in staggering.

You're completely wrong and you're assuming (wrongly) that most people "follow" things. They don't. They read about things in the newspapers, online, on TV and when something interests them, they may spend some time exploring the subject.

Ugh I have an ipad and iPhone 5 , couldn't care less about an Apple keynote , unless they are showing a games console and 15 new games ?

No, but they are showing iOS 7, which is said to be a radical departure from previous iOS versions design-wise.

They are also showing the new OS X and there are heavy rumors of updated MacBooks and Macbook Airs.

I'll stick with E3 though. I can catch up with all the Apple stuff after MS conference.

The fight for the twitter trends has begun.
Srsly, wtf, they take each others top story - and most of all, I can not watch both.

The Xbox One's focus seems to me to be very much about being a consumer-facing device first and foremost and a games console second, though. Microsoft's aims seem to be very much focused on that at the moment. And that's absolutely putting them in direct competition with Apple.

This may be true for the product as a whole, but they won't be focused on those aspects at E3, they'll be entirely focused on games if they are to be believed.

Now if MS had unveiled the console at E3, then that would be a different situation entirely, but they didn't, so it's not a factor.

it's not confirmed either way, but they usually do not. They do sometimes but rarely.

The issue here is that apple will get most of the front page attention from all the popular tech sites and whatnot.

Thanks.

I don't see there being a conflict of interest. If MS focus entirely on games, most tech sites wouldn't have bothered it covering it to any significant degree outside of a front page headline, which it will still receive after any significant Apple info.

Now if MS were revealing the console at E3, that would be a different matter all together and all the excitement would make sense.

I just thought of this but this fall we are getting 2 new consoles and also a new iPhone and iPad. A lot of people will be deciding where to spend the money,

Yeah, they read things online. So if they want to read about the latest gaming news, where do they go? Techradar or GT? Sure, Techradar cover gaming news, but if they want in depth gaming news, they'll go a site that specialises in providing that news.

Just like if they want in depth tech news, they'll go to Techradar rather than GT.

We get at least 1 new ipad a year and a new iPhone every year , do people still buy the PS360 ?

you think that but most tech sites, especially the most popular ones like the verge or engadget have gone from just technology to all out consumer products. They cover everything. So now they have to compete with apple for upfront space, where lets face it, apple gets all the hits. And these tech blogs get way more hits than most if not all of the game sites I believe.

For the first time I'll probably skip an E3 conference for this. It'll be especially interesting if Apple drops what their tvs plans are.

Yeah, Sarah the Soccer Mom is going to learn all about Xbox on GT. You're heavily overestimating the number of hardcore gamers who actually follow these things. Especially considering that MS' focus is turning to the much more mainstream audience.

You only have to skip Microsoft's.

Sony's starts late in the evening with no other distractions.

Most of us are watching Apple in the morning and Sony in the evening.

it's seriously not worth watching Apple, you can just follow the liveblog. MS will at least have game trailers/demos that you want to see live, with Apple you just need the news and pics

Sure, but that's still not a doom scenario for the E3 presser. It will be sharing headlines, but will be prominent.

Sarah the soccer mom doesn't care about a $500 console. I'm also sure that those hardcore gamers you talk about know where to go to get gaming info. So we're back to square one.

Most of us :)

I'll ask again , everyone is like "lolllolol Xboned by Apple"

Are we pretending Sony is getting any mainstream coverage if Apple are doing a Keynote ?

All three will be getting mainstream coverage. It'll just go Apple > Sony > Microsoft in terms of who gets the most.

Apple makes news in the morning and Sony makes news in the evening. That's a nice spread.

Everyone who covered the news from Feb 20 will give Sony the follow-up coverage on June 10th. There was a huge appetite for it in February and there will be a huge appetite for it in June.

Are you guys really going to watch a apple keynote. i mean seriously, Your pants will be wet and you'll still be watching MS conference even if you hate MS

Except we're not. This console is clearly aimed primarily at the mainstream audience which consume a lot of TV content. MS desperately needs as wide exposure as possible which means newspapers, random TV stations etc. that can carry its message to people who have more interest in a media box than in a simple game console. Sony is aiming for the hardcore this gen.

I don't know why people are making out like this is some huge deal. It's happened before in 2011. Apple (knowing about Microsoft's E3 event) even talked about Game Center having more users than Xbox Live:

In just 9 months we have 50 million Game Center users. To put that into perspective Xbox Live has been around for about eight years and they have around 30 million users

The events coinciding didn't exactly have some sort of disastrous effect on MS last time, so why would it this time?

Of course not. But say for example the Verge isn't going to be liveblogging Microsoft's E3 event on the main page like they did yesterday. They'll focus on WWDC, like nearly every tech site.

They did when it happened last time.

Yeah I know. I meant I'll be skipping MS's conference. Or since the MS conference will probably be on TV have it on in the background.
New Apple iTV

iPad and iPhone are controller devices

Yes!

I'm astonished that Apple TV is as outdated as it is. It has so much potential that this has to be the year they finally completely redo things and give Apple TV its own App Store. There is so much potential without having to buy a 400 dollar behemoth console.

They did when it happened last time.

The events were close in 2011, but were they actually simultaneous?

I feel like the Apple TV needs a more sophisticated input mechanism than its current remote before it has a full app store, but they could certainly have a channel store. Aren't they supposed to be adding HBO Go and the CW sometime this year? Deals have been inked on both.

And yet, their E3 presser will be entirely about catering to the gamer. Not the mainstream consumer, the gamer.

This is what MS have claimed. E3 will be all about the games, it won't be catering to the mainstream at E3.

Oh trust, it's coming :)

I think they're saving it for the unannounced Apple Television.

A real Apple television married to my future PS4 is going to be incredible. INCREDIBLE!

Apple doesn't stream it's keynote, so doesn't matter. Stream MS and check the liveblog for Apple when the Men With Guns games are being demoed.

You've seen their presser already?

Is moving goalposts a thing you do often? When you reach the end of one line of argument, you quickly to jump to another?

Sorry, what? My argument is that the console isn't aimed at the hardcore and that overlapping with Apple conference will hurt its exposure to a wider audience. You claim that it won't and that MS will show off hardcore games at E3, which you have no proof of. So, did you see their presser?

yup, at least with me. Although it doesn't seem like I'll be getting a XboxONE...I'm not really interested in what Apple has coming up, BUT if Microsoft starts doing Kinect shit again with voice stuff and TV stuff...and if Gaf members start going crazy at some announcements or demos going on during the Apple Conference...then yeah, I'm switching over.

otherwise, I'm looking forward to footage of Microsoft's hardcore exclusive games, and new footage of Next Gen 3rd Party games.

The console is aimed at as large of an audience as possible.

The reveal was aimed more toward the mainstream, the E3 presser will be more aimed towards the gamer. Your suggestion that somehow showing Kinect games means it's not focused on gaming is as stupid as the argument that the MS presser will suffer because it's happening at the same time as the Apple presser.

I saw their last presser, it was focused on gaming, hardcore and mainstream, but mostly hardcore, as well as apps. This conference will be entirely focused on gaming according to MS.

Does it matter?

As a gamer, I know which conference I'm going to tune into. The other I can go to Engadget afterwards to read the announcements.

It works both ways, in a manner that's especially relevant to Microsoft now. "As a multimedia lifestyle enthusiast, I know which conference I'm going to tune into. I'll probably go to Polygon afterwards, to read other announcements."

This doesn't just effect Microsoft. Sony's press conference is on the same day. News happens in daily cycles, so if Microsoft's mainstream coverage is going to be draped by Apple's conference overlapping with their own, so will Sony's considering it's only hours later.

Not so fast. In news media, content is king, and Sony won't have to worry about its content overlapping with Apple's. So even if PS4 may not be the flavor of the week, it'll at least be flavor of the hour.

Sony's is in the evening.

6 PM PST

To reiterate, the difference between 10 AM and 6 PM is literally night and day, or day and night.

Ben Kuchera writing a new piece about this: "Why MS conference happening at the same time than Apple's is the best thing that could have happened to Microsoft and the worst nightmare for Apple (Really!)"

lol oh shit.

Yeah, in tech sites, but the MS E3 presser isn't about the tech. It's all about games. So again, this won't have any impact.

The same applies to Sony's presser. This is non news and I reiterate, not sure why people are getting so excited.

Unless Apple announce a console with exclusive Steam support, it's a non factor.

So Apple's annual WWDC, where they unveil [drop bombs on] the next evolution of mobile computing in a nutshell, is all a non factor. You heard it from Miles Quaritch first, folks. He's just not sure why people are getting so excited.

Sony will get the visibility they need by having their event in the evening.

Yep. Sony will get more visibility than Microsoft, it can be argued.

So you believe every site, gaming and otherwise will be entirely focused on the Apple event?

Really?

You believe that Gawker (Kotaku) is going to be content with letting Verge (Polygon) get all the hits? Really? Granted, they may not be entirely focused on Apple's event, but think about the hits, man. Think about the hits. It's going to be 90-10, just like GameSpot's twitter poll.

It will not matter how many reporters there are available, whether 10 or 100, when there's only one event that even Android folks are going to care about. Unless there are some reporters who don't mind working for pennies while others work for dollars, you're not going to get the hard hitting journalism games are known for.

But please, keep insinuating that Apple's event is not going to have any impact whatsoever on Microsoft. Your arguments read like you aren't even aware of the WWDC thread in Off-Topic.

Exactly and if anybody could pull it off, it could be them. On the software/PC side, I hope that Steam also starts providing options.

I thought GAF has declared iOS isn't part of gaming? So we shouldn't have to worry.

I think the problem is media and news outlets. Apple's announcements would practically drown out anything by MS. But it could be much worse, imagine if Jobs was alive and this was his last WWDC.

And who's going to be interested in the Kinect games they show (which they will show, since we haven't seen one during the reveeal)? The hardcore or the wide audience? And what's going to happen when media start give more attention to the Apple conference than the MS conference? Your reasoning is flawed. MS will show Kinect games, aimed at casuals. Since there will be major overlap between Apple and MS pressers, the media will give less attention to the Xbox stuff and as a result hurt its exposure to the non-hardcore consumers.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. Sure they'll show some Kinect titles, but that doesn't mean the entire presser is aimed at casuals or that it will be result in any significant overlap.

They can show 3-4 Kinect titles and still have a presser that's focused on the hardcore gamer.
