Are non-comic book reading people still stuck with 90's Image Comics image?

90's Image Comics sucks, we know that. Well except for Spawn and Savage Dragon, they were cool.

Anyway, their TOTALLY XTREME shit with terrible art that plagued the mid 90s up to the early 2000s are very infamous yeah, but there's a reason they still exist today.

Since the late 2000s they publish multiple titles with very little "sharing" of universes, they sorta remind me of Dark Horse in that regard. I really enjoyed Invincible and Astounding Wolf-Man for instance, and the Super Dinosaur run is really great.

I think Spawn and Savage Dragon are still around too. And of course there's The Walking Dead.

Image has completely rebuilt their reputation. Once they valued the writers above the artists, everything changed for them,

Invincible gets beat up, heals, then beats up the threat while fucking up something in his personal life.

There I saved you a hundred dollars in trade paperbacks. Buy Techjacket and Atomic Robo instead

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
What? Invincible? The Walking Dead? Not even going to mention Saga?

You might as well still be reading Spawn & Youngblood

90's Image was what got me into comics to begin with and is still my personal gold standard for what I like in comic books. I agree that some of their stuff was silly and kinda bad, but it was kinda bad in a way that I liked.

Not that I'm saying that current comics aren't good as well, but I reread classic Image comics more than I buy new ones.

Spawn was good though, also why are you dissing Invincible? I thought it was serviceable for what it was.

Image are easily the best publisher of comic books out right now, you just gotta ignore anything with "TOP COW" on the cover.

They publish:

Black Monday Murders
Wayward
Rat Queens
God Country
Underwinter
Glitterbomb
The Hunt
Crosswind
Deady Class
AD: After Death
Redneck
I Hate Fairyland
Kill or Be Killed
Rock Candy Mountain
Royal City
The Autumnlands
Extremity

And that's just the stuff I read.

I read almost exclusively Image books these days. Most of what the Big 2 put out doesn't interest me in the slightest anymore. Image has the most variety (non-superhero books!) and imo, the best storytelling in part because they're not beholden to tying in plots to movie marketing and attempting to find new stories to tell about 50+ year old characters.

I mean, what's the point of showing past images that don't really affect the company anymore?

So far their only recent garbage is Darker Image and that "reunion" of sorts of their 90's crap.

Because things like Spawn and Savage Dragon are still popular and are huge comics icons.

It's kind of like asking why Disney still promotes Mickey Mouse when Mickey obviously isn't the main focus of their brand anymore. Obviously not at the same level, but most people who are into comic books at the very least recognize old Image characters because they were popular and people who were into the characters then probably still like them.

I'm stuck with a "don't know shit about comic books" image of comic books. I bought 3 in my entire life, Cyborg #1-3 but then the store closed down and I never continued.

well originally Image comics was started by 5 comic book artists. So yeah they looked great at first. Except for Rob Liefeld of course

but then they just got over the top bad with sooo much spandex.

Are they, really? Honestly?

Saga and The Walking Dead are the face of Image now.

If you enjoy science fiction, horror, and crime thrillers, you're missing out. Some of the coolest and most interest genre stuff is happening in Image comics and other indie publishers

Especially when the biggest indie stuff is Saga and Walking Dead

30 years(Savage Dragon) as a continuous indie book is nothing to sneeze at

Yeah, I'm not really sure in what sense they are popular. I mean, people still know Spawn but his comics don't really sell and he has no other media surrounding him and Savage Dragon is even worse off than Spawn. They exist but icons? I dunno.

Every once in awhile I will look through comics and find that to me, all of the superhero stuff seems almost the same as it always has. Obviously it isn't, but it just doesn't appeal to me at all. For the few graphic novels that resonated with me (Box Office Poison springs to mind) I would just rather read it as a novel than in visual form.

Non-comics readers don't even know what the fuck Image are and are just wondering when Wolverine and Batman are gonna show up in an Avengers movie.

You are crazy if you think that most people who are into comics don't at least recognize Spawn. Why are people acting like most companies don't promote their most iconic characters from every era of their existence?

Come on it deserves a bit more credit than that. It also has a great supporting cast that's somehow both under and overutilized.

I can barely stand superhero comics outside of Batman and a few other select writers/artists

But comics are so much more than that. It's funny;superheroes are the juggernaut of the medium, but everything else in comics is probably more varied than anything within the superhero genre.

Oh I agree, and did not mean to I play that superhero stuff is representative of the medium as a whole. To me, I just can't tell the difference in a superhero comic today vs 20-30 years ago.

The indie comic scene always fascinated me, but I just couldn't justify the cost involved with reading them vs spending $10 on a regular novel.

People recognizing Spawn doesn't make him popular. And how often does Image actually promote Spawn nowadays?

And I only knew Spawn from the movie and figures I saw in Toys R Us well before I knew he was a comic book character. I don't think the average comic reader getting in comics post-Spawn popularity knows him offhand as an iconic character unless they've actively decided to read his comics.

If they do recognize him, that recognition isn't tied to Image. It's tied to "that demon guy with the big red cape and chains, didn't he have a movie with a clown"

I wonder how many times "Is that Nightwatch?" is heard in stores with Spawn figures

Comixology has sales often, and Image often has big discounts. Digital comics are pretty cheap. I wouldn't have gotten into comics if it wasn't for all the sales, because it's too expensive otherwise

Personally I'd recommend Stray Bullets, Saga, Criminal, Lazarus, and Wytches as good must-reads

As a teenager in the 90's some of my most vivid comic book memories are Gen 13 covers. That shit was steamy in a pre internet porn world.

There is a bunch of Spawn merchandise and it just got announced like two months ago that McFarlane is directing a new movie. There is a current comic run that is nearing 300 issues. Obviously it's not as popular as Walking Dead or Saga, but it's also not some dead franchise.

As for your last paragraph, the vast, vast majority of people who know what the Walking Dead is don't tie it to Image comics either. They just recognize the cast and zombies. I guarantee that if you ask the average Walking Dead fan what company publishes the book they would have no idea. There is also a huge portion of people who like the show who never read an issue of the comic.

Outside of making fun of it, I haven't heard anyone talk about Youngblood in years. I have to assume that the only reason it even still has a comic is because Leifeld was an original owner.

There is a reason Wizard magazine came in plastic , they knew their audience

I could not believe some of them weren't sold in brown paper. My uncle ran a comic book store and I sometimes worked there and just stocking them...whew. They got even racier as it went on.

Literally every mention of YB so far in this thread has been making fun of it. Like I said, no one brings the book up fondly. If it's mentioned at all, it's because someone wants to make fun of it.

Definitely need to second Lazarus, probably one of my favorite fictional dystopias. Saga also deserves all the praise it gets. I'll have to check out the others.

I'd also like to recommend Copperhead, Deadly Class, Descender, and Outcast.
