Influential Iranian filmmaker Amir Naderi’s internationally funded, Tokyo-set produc­tion is not your average slice-of-life tale. Fiercely unconventional, Cut stole Naderi away from his (semi-)native New York and planted him in the middle of a unique fund­ing scheme. The aptly named Tokyo Story, a production outfit consisting of two bank­ers with a lot of bright ideas, found a way to dodge big-industry bucks, keeping Cut independent and one hundred per cent real. Besides, what big studio would dare make a film about the end of cinema?

Using stark black-and-white imagery and a raw, digital aesthetic, Cut tells the story of Shuji (Hidetoshi Nishijima), an unknown filmmaker who craves great cinema like a junkie dying for a fix. The only problem, he figures, is that great films are dead — unless he can find a way to make them himself. Shuji seeks solace on rooftops or in grave­yards, where he preaches the gospel of the old film classics with the manic energy of a television evangelist to whoever will listen. The only thing that regularly quells his mania is the sound of his 16mm projec­tor playing the works of Kurosawa, Ozu or Mizoguchi at the weekly screenings he hosts above his apartment. That is, until two thugs suddenly appear and drag him away.

Much like his leading man, Naderi received his cinematic education by devour­ing golden oldies and forming relationships with notable film critics who later prompted him to become part of the New Iranian Cinema and benefit from its increasing international reach. However, unlike Naderi, Shuji only ever manages to make a few forgettable films that almost no one sees. These films are financed exclusively by his obliging brother, who borrows money from the yakuza. When the gang demands their debt be cleared, Shuji puts his love for mov­ies to the test, offering to work as a human punching bag. It’s a role that could easily cost him his life — or maybe, just maybe, earn him enough self-respect to make another movie. A great one.

All I can say is that I imported the recently restored 1960 original and loved it.
Such a great piece of film.
Haven't seen the remake yet, but I have heard great thing about it, even though it's supposed to be quite a bit different from the original.

Saw this at Fantastic Fest, where the lead actress won best actress. Very cute musical. Not really all that sexy, but lots of fun. Has some cool images of the kappa in different environments. Trivia: since it was a German/Japanese co-production, the songs, although in Japanese, are sung by Germans.

Recommended.

Just saw the Miike Hara-kiri (in 3D).

Judged on it's own it's fine. It's a good story and it's done alright although it drags somewhat in the second half. But there really doesn't seem to be a lot of distinctive Miike in it and the 3D is unused. I thought it would have it's own stamp on the material but it doesn't.

Bleak Night is fantastic. Didn't expect it to be this intense, I thought the main dude was on the edge of going nuts at all times lol. Really terrific acting.

Is Fire Of Conscience any good? I enjoyed The Beast Stalker and I am going to watch The Stool Pigeon this weekend. Just want to know how are Lam's other films.

Just saw Wu Xia, which surprised me quite a bit. even though i know Peter Chan jumps from genre to genre like Danny Boyle, i didn't this to have a bit of Sherlock in there as well. For an overcrowded martial arts and historical/fantasy epics from China, this felt quite fresh. And personally, i loved the ending
really had me laughing out loud
.

I enjoyed the film too but I would have preferred it more if it had stayed as a murder mystery to the end rather than turning into a action film in the 2nd half of the film. Anyways how 1911 that stars Jackie Chan?

Fire of Conscience is pretty bad, but I felt Stool Pigeon was about the same. Seems all the praise after Beast Stalker must have gotten to Lam. Both Fire of Conscience and Stool Pigeon (and Beast Stalker before that to an extent) are riddled with unnecessary subplots, absurd plot devices that only serve to artificially raise the melodrama and off-the-rails overacting. His upcoming film looks the same. Dude could seriously fit right into the Korean film industry with his style.

Miss the no-nonsense Dante Lam of Beast Cops and Sniper.

I don't see the Korean style in his works. He's very much a Hong Kong director.

Can't wait for My Way. From the director of Taegukgi; one of my favorite movies ever. The only thing missing is Won Bin because his brother in Taegukgi is the star of My Way.

I found 1911 as boring as The Founding of a Republic and Beginning of the Great Revival. There is more action in 1911 but I didn't find any of them that great.

No, it's Kitano trying to make a Kitano's yakuza movie but it's soulless, watchable but forgettable.

Watched Sector 7 and The Front Line today. Sector 7 is a decent monster flick if you have right attitude while watching. It's no Host though but if you want new monster film for 31st of October it's pretty good choice (BEDEVILLED is the best coiche tho.).

Front Line was lame. There has been huge boom with these asian war films lately and kinda have had my fill already but this one stands out a bit thanks to the big budget but like most recent SK/Chinese war movies this too is awfully paced and it's filled with useless over-the-board-melodrama. Brotherhood of War still holds the title for best asian war film. My Way will probably take the cake later this year, big buzz surrounding it right now.


tomorrow: Poongsan, Poetry(again) and End of Animal.

So far, I have watched DoA, Audition and 13 Assassins from Miike.

Audition was the only good one of the bunch, and even that had a few flaws I think needed cleaning up.

Are there any other films of his in the 'must watch' category, because right now I'm getting the impression he's more lauded for the potential he displays (opening to DoA was a stylish orgasm of cinema) rather than any complete work he's actually done.

The Bird People in China and The Happiness of the Katakuris are personal favorites of mine don't really think that much rest of his films. Bird People is probably most down to earth film from him and it's really different from rest of his films. Katakuris is crazy ass dark-comedy musical and it's rare to see musicals from Japan and this one is well worth a watch. I do like the original South-Korean film the Quiet Family over Miike's take on it so if you like Katakuris give the original filma a try. Those two are only Miike films I would recommend. Oh Bomb! from 60s is great Japanese musical comedy if Katakuris gets you hankering for more ;)


I have also seen Visitor Q, Yatterman, Fudoh and Zebraman. If you go for the WTF experiences they are decent. I Have heard good things about Gozu and Crows Zero but haven't seen them yet.

Edit. DoA 2 wasn't actually that bad, well it was but the characters had kind of Suda51 vibe so I did like it to some degree. Still just watch the two films I mentioned first :b Also avoid Ichi the Killer, everyone says it's good but it's not, crazy Miike as usual but with more gore, nothing else.

I personally like his game to movie adaption; Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Actually one of the better videogame movies out there so give it a watch if you can.
