Assassin's Creed III |OT| Easier to read than Ratonhnhaké:ton

I think it will be different for everyone. I talked to some other reviewers and they never experienced what I did and vice versa. In the previous games I never experienced any glitches, so it can be different for everyone.
I've never really encountered much jank in AC games too. Weird NPC here and there, but that was about it.

I think I have enough impressions by now to officially call it a disappointment. Ah well I guess it's better than me going in excited and finding out it's yet another AAA disappointment myself.

Yeah I was hoping for more from this one, sounds like a lot more of the same really. Seems like the yearly sequels have begun to hurt this series.

I'm just wondering if they've finally added even a smidgen of difficulty to the series.

It doesn't look like they did. Some people called the new guy a killing machine so it looks like their plan to stop health from recharging in battle wasn't good enough.

Let's be honest there's never going to be difficulty in a series where the publisher can easily expect 10 million+ sales.

It's be kinda awesome if they went the KH route: have some sort of a secret ending that can easily be accessed if you complete the game on the highest difficulty setting (and of course, add in that highest difficulty setting)

As much as I can see the appeal of having greater difficulty, it really isn't something that I think about when I play Assassins Creed. They are just fun games to play, that being said however I like the ability to go for 100% sync which provides enough challenge for me. If I want to play a difficult game I would replay Demons Souls lol

Has anyone's Ubiworkshop edition shipped yet? I ordered on July 2nd and I was hoping I'd be in the first round of shipments that would hopefully arrive on the release date but mine still hasn't shipped.

A more difficult AC sounds like a bad idea to me, at least without a serious redesign of the controls. Most of the trouble I have in any given AC is just trying to get Ezio to run through something narrow without having him run up walls or trip and fall like a moron while trying to chase down a Cowardly Captain; if you added competent enemy AI and made it so Ezio couldn't take twenty bullets to the face anymore it'd be a nightmare. Assassin's Creed gameplay only really flows smoothly when they account for the cumbersome controls.

I wouldn't object to them removing instant win buttons like the kill streaks and Arrow Storm, but the 100% sync objectives are as hard as I'm really interested in for Assassin's Creed.

I am digging through this thread but finding impressions is kind of a chore. Can someone do me a favor and post a nice summary?

Anyone got any impressions on how long the game is? As much as I enjoyed Revelations, I was kind of bummed how it turned out to be half the length of the previous games. (AC1/2/Bro took me 25ish hours each, I beat Rev in 12)

I would agree that the game lacks technical polish. It looks fairly good though, and I haven't run into anything game breaking.

Frame rate on 360 is frequently sub 30, although it's not really that bad, and tearing is not an issue. I'm picky about performance and considered a bunch of titles this gen to be basically unplayable due to low frame rate or tearing (Dragon Age, Skyrim, or Enslaved all on PS3 come to mind). This is not great but it's fine.

Sound on 360 is compressed to hell. Voices sound like an AM radio.

Game is fun (but easy as mentioned), atmosphere and presentation are good, characters are interesting.

I've been reading that the the ps3 version seems to have a more stable framerate, and less pop in. Wish someone here with the ps3 version can say anything about this.

Gonna have to say nope. Sounds about what you'd expect from any game. Get better headphones or something. They're crystal clear for me.

I was initially really, really thrown off by the game. The combat felt janky as fuck for a while, not that the combat in the series has ever been stellar, but it felt a lot more cumbersome... then I got used to it. Still have a lot to learn with it, though, since there are times where I'll just end up running away when I want to stab a guy.

The story is actually pretty neat so far, with really great presentation, although at times it is very boring. The beginning would have put me off completely if it weren't for the characters, due to the overall slowness and apparent tedium of everything. I feel that AC2 and ACB had the best pacing for their beginnings. The game is visually beautiful on a whole. Controlling a ship is actually pretty fun, was expecting to loathe it. Desmond's sections rock so far. Hunting is so-so, I'll probably care more for it if I ever figure out how to actually make use of game. I haven't bought a single item or taken part in any of the "economic" aspects yet, so far they don't seem to be a priority.

I haven't noticed any glitches or lack of polish... so far.

What about the most important impression.......your own?

Im looking forward to this game. I can't wait. I'll decide if it's goog or not. I don't need other people to tell me.

EDIT- Exactly, hlhbk.

Ah GAF the only place where a few bad impressions model the general consensus. This sounds like the black mesa thread. Hate it before release and love it afterwards.

I have no idea why people thought a sequel of an amazing and great selling franchise would completely change the way it plays? So more of the same in a new location and from all accounts a good to great story?

HYPE LEVEL THROUGH THE ROOF!!!!!!!

It's because Gaf is generally negative about most games, except in rare cases. Sometimes the negativity turns to praise after release, other times turns to hatred. ACIII was hyped, but, then when it was revealed to be another AC game and nothing radically different it turned to disappointment and soon hatred.

I've honestly never had an issue with the controls in the AC games. It's the opposite for me; I find them quite smooth and easy to work with.

In fact, one of the major reasons I want the series to be more difficult is to take advantage of the great agility and combat skills of the AC protags. As it stands now their slick moves feel largely wasted because you're using them on what amounts to training dummies. I don't need it to be Ninja Gaiden, but more robust challenges in the core combat would be something I'd like to see from the series.

I've found that negative pre-release impressions tend to be closer to the truth than extremely positive ones, since hype usually blinds a lot of people. This is a full sequel but it seems like it's going to play and feel like AC 2.5.

It is fascinating how I am the biggest AC fan but I have never bought the game at launch. I have always played it during my winter break. I rarely follow the dev cycle for these games, I don't watch trailers/previews or screenshots. I dunno what hte achievemtns are. This is so 'different' from other games I'm a fan off.

This is the biggest change since AC2 and I still know nothing about it. I love it.

Exactly this. The kind of difficulty that AC needs to master is allowing you to complete missions without too much hassle, but only offer higher percentages of synchronization based on really challenging tasks.

Well I was going to pick it up at the Target buy one get one free sale. I am shocked people are still pre-ordering stuff (apart from amazon).

Wait a second...there's a buy one get one free sale? When?

I don't know, tweets like this:

@aegies: the point of this is, and i think i can say this without breaking embargo, ubisoft has actually shown very little of AC3's "big deal" stuff.

Still have me pretty damn excited

That's the only way to enjoy the game IMO, I mean you can go in killing spree, but it would be tedious because

1- The game is hard. Really, it's hard, ok not mindblowing hard but it's the hardest Ac by far. There's one of the first "boss" fights that is similar to the second to last fight of AC1, only with enemies that actually do /something/ (and that muthaf... is hardest to kill than Batman wtf. Infiltration missions are ramped up a bit too. so a Rambo in dress approach will get you killed a loooot.

2- The game shines when you use your (excellently desinged) surroundings.

And they are right. Props to Ubisoft, you'll get mindblown like in the first 6 minutes, really.

Also, spoilers!
There's a new light shed in the whole "lucy" fiasco.. and you'll like it

I envy you. Wish I had enough self-control to keep myself from reading every detail there is about games I'm hyped for :(

So this game looks absolutely amazing (nice OT), and everyone is all hyped for it, but:

How is the story/narrative going to be in this? I didn't finish Assassins Creed 2, and therefore found Brotherhood to be fairly hard to follow (and subsequently gave up on it quite early) and while Revelations has piqued my interest because of the setting, I've stayed away from it because I'm worried about my lack of plot knowledge ruining my enjoyment.

I know I could always skim through a wikipedia summary or something, but it never sticks like actually playing through something and I'm hoping that Assassins Creed 3 will be a bit of a fresh start in that regard, where I'll be able to get invested in the narrative without getting damn confused.

Shall I just pick up Revelations or something and run through that, or should I be fine considering this is the next numbered sequel as opposed to Assassins Creed 2's arc?

Just bumping this now that it's getting closer to release. I'm really in two minds over getting this because the whole setting looks awesome, but I won't enjoy it if the story goes completely over my head (mainly Desmond stuff)

Someone here said the main quest took him 11 hours.

I seriously don't know if I can wait until the Pc date to play this. Especially with the new day one ps3 digital stuff and Hitman coming out the same day... But then again I always regret going with the console version when the Pc versions arrive.

Just be patient and then on the 20th you'll get 2 games!

If anything this game's performance pretty much demands a PC version.

I too am deciding I don't like this game before I have played it thanks to the impressions in this thread.

LOL, I am certain I will enjoy it, but am expecting a few things that I will not be so fond of based on footage I have seen. Namely, things like QTE hunting, some of the voice acting and the mini-games to break up brawls stand out as not very appealing. However, on the whole, the experience looks to be pretty darn solid to me.

As for the comment of Brotherhood still being the best, which was also my favorite in the series. This for me is turning into being my new favorite ganme in the series. I try to look at the key mechanics the games have always had.

Stealth/Social stealth. I feel that is is much improved with the stalking zones in the forest. The ability to press up against walls and whistle at guards to walk towards you. Non lethal silent takedowns. Hiding in crowds is better than previous games too. Instead of just looking for groups of people standing or walking around, you can blend in to a much spread out placement of people. And with the crowd numbers increased in the cities it makes it a lot easier staying hidden when having a high notoriety level.

Combat. This is a HUGE improvement I feel. I am having so much fun beating the crap out of large groups of enemies. The amount of different killing and KO animations blows my mind. Also, hiding in the forest and setting up an attack on a british escorted caravan "The Patriot" style never gets old.

Traversal/Free Running. Now this can be up for debate. I didn't really know how to feel about it at first, but then when I started running through the trees with Conner and I was sold. It is really an amazing feeling hanging out hunting in the woods, and then hearing marching drums in the distance, then racing through the trees to get in a spot above the group of troops to rope dart the drummer hanging out in the back. lol.

Story...Not talking about it till after the game is released sorry.

But like was mentioned before. The game is fucking massive. Instead of Ubisoft committing to the holiday release window, they could of spent the time to really polish it a bit more taking care of some of these strange glitches. Imagine if RDR only had two years development... I haven't experienced anything game breaking. But just things like characters bouncing up and down slightly in the air. Animals that stop moving. Just strange clipping in character too. One in which a section of Desmond's back is poking out of his backpack. I watched a walkthrough online and saw that another person had the same problem. And its not something that is fixed with a reload. It's always there. Really strange that Ubisoft didn't notice it.

Sounds like your typical random bugginess that comes with the territory of large open game worlds. If the game on top of all that is great, then these are the kinds of things that I just generally get a laugh out of and then move on.

I get excited for a lot of games at first before the PR machine really kicks in. Those are designed solely to get the casual's attention so over the course of time I'm beaten over the head with negative information and I lose all hype. One preview will reveal that the game has some ultra streamlined element to help people and others will reveal similar awful things and then after all of that the hype is gone by the time the game comes out.

At least in this I don't expect a really hardcore game, the series has never been like that. I'm talking more about other games, like Hitman most recently.
