So glad The Protomen is getting some mentions in here.

Fantastic band, both of their albums are absolutely incredible. Can't wait for Part 3.

Couple things to say:

1) This is the kind of music I live for. I love 80s music, but this is basically like the music we would have if that particular style had continued to evolve through the past 20 years.

2) I don't listen to a lot of music (well, I *hear* music, but I rarely just sit around and listen to it, it's always while doing something else), so even though I know I'm a fan of the genre, my knowledge of it remains frighteningly shallow.

That's where this thread comes in and I thank you all for contributing, because I've found a lot of stuff that I never knew was out there.

I don't have much to contribute really, but of course there is Electric Six. They're more a fusion of different styles, but a lot of their songs have the whole "dance-rock" thing going for em that I tend to find appealing. If you haven't checked them out, or only know them for Gay Bar, I'd urge you to look deeper. :)

Edit: Von Iva is pretty good, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwYEuYP_sjY (Their music and Zooey Deschanel single-handedly saved this piece of crap movie for me).

Edit 2: I'm not sure how anyone can NOT, on some level, like La Roux.

Awesome thread, i'm always on the look out for more 80s flavored stuff. This is a bit of the stuff I got.

Glass Candy "Digital Versicolor"
Chromatics "Running Up That Hill"

<3 <3 <3 Italians Do It Better <3 <3 <3

To add a bit, Glass Candy's Etheric Device and Chromatics' Hands In The Dark would be my picks from those two bands, though it's all good. I love this shit, I love this '80 disco sound. There's also Desire, Johnny Jewel's third band. Under Your Spell is one of my favorite songs ever.

Also I know I've already mentioned this band, but Parallels deserves so much more love. I'm really surprised they aren't more popular. They had a killer cut on a Kitsuné comp, are associated with Crystal Castles, and a sound ripped straight out of the '80s ... but just get zero attention. It's ridiculous, Visionaries is by far and away the best album I've heard all year, too. It's perfect.

A few other favorites from them:

Find The Fire
Midnight Voices
Reservoir

Cool thread. :D

Contributions:

Cullen - Easily Impressed (Calling in Sick remix)
Irene Cara - Fame (2manydjs remix) - this sounds like the 80s because it is the 80s! it is pretty much cheating but its a great song

I was listening to Hurts and then I remembered this thread, don't think anyone mentioned them yet...

Hurts - Wonderful Life
Hurts - Better Than Love

Not sure I actually like them, but they do have bit more soul then your typical 80's necrophiliacs...

I see lot of people listing Italians Do It Better stuff, well I like Chromatics, Desire & co. a lot aswell, but to me they sound very NOW, not retro/80s at all...same goes for most of the Modular / Ed Banger acts...

They weren't mentioned because they sound like a really bad 90's euro trance cover band.

Just a heads up to everyone in this thread, just because it has synthesizers does not make it "80's style". La Roux? I mean, she's OK by current pop standards, but other than her retro inspired fashion sense there's nothing 80's about her.

Neon Neon is a decent suggestion. I'll add this track from Telefon Tel Aviv's latest (and probably last) album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myiGdL9hAr0

My vote goes to La Roux - Bulletproof.. It has the synthesizer sound of the 80's, and the song is catchy as hell. Just enough for a classic 80's hit. Believe me, if that song came out in the 80's it would have blown the world up.

That synth sound isn't 80s in any way. I suppose you were refering to the DX7 bass sound?

Ladyhawke's whole album would fit in here
My Delirium

Agreed with all of this, even though all of these are at least a couple of years old. Can't wait for new Cut Copy & Ladyhawke albums.

Neon Neon "Dream Cars" - The best concept album about John DeLorean
Bag Raiders "Fun Punch" - Ran across this one listening to Picadilly Records "Magic Mix" of new releases
Cut Copy "Strangers in the Wind" - This whole album is fantastic and Pitchfork.tv used to have a live performance that was stellar
Ladyhawke "Another Runaway" - "Back of the Van" is another choice cut

Kudos to everyone saying Chromeo. For true 80s flavor, try No Can Do with Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates)
