Yeah it's downright insane. I just listened to 2 episodes of Guys we Fucked with Asa Akira and Stoya and it was depressing hearing the fuckery they have to deal with. In particular Stoya mentioned how landlords dismiss her the moment she has to mention her work. She struggles to get an apartment and when she got her current apartment she had to pay a year upfront. And she even got judged by one of her previous doctors. Akira mentioned how she knew the consequences of the industry and how she can't ever work with kids. Also Akira and Stoya mentioned how they both regularly go to therapy.

On a side note I met Asa Akira in person for her book signing and she's awesome. I'd also reccomend reading her first book for anyone that's interested about why and how she got into the industry.

Edit: And forgot to mention how Akira can't get certain people on her podcast even if they don't personally have a problem with her work. And of course its all due to optics.

That is such bullshit, and super true. The way adult industry stars are treated is fucking pathetic. IT. IS. A. JOB. Can you imagine if you worked as a teacher and had to deal with the level of discrimination adult film performers deal with? The lack of empathy on display for adult industry and sex workers is really deplorable. Sex isn't bad. Getting paid for having sex isn't bad. Why it's so hard to get a grip on the concept is beyond me. As long as the people performing sex on camera are healthy and being safe, I don't see the problem.

If I really were him, I'd be posting from beyond the grave. Which would be fairly impressive.

Wow before this thread I had no idea who Bree Olson or Charlie Sheen's goddesses or anything was.

My husband claims to have no idea who Bree Olson is either? We're in our 30s. Maybe she needs to just change her name and move to some quiet suburb. No one will admit knowing who she is, she can live a normal life, etc.

The problem with this idea is that all it would take is one person finding out, and that one person would tell a few people, and maybe one of those people posts it on Facebook, and then half the town knows.

To be honest, it's hard for me to feel sad for her.

Most people are not having the chance to earn millions once in their lifetime.

Plus, even when I was 18 years old, everybody knew that if they'd do porn, people would have a weird outlook on them.
I can't imagine her being so oblivious to how the world (and the US escpecially) views porn actors.

I don't think its that much different in Europe, least in the UK/Ireland. Ireland still can't grasp the concept that women should be allowed to have an abortion if they're so inclined.

"left a career where I made millions", but is now broke. what happened?
Made millions, was young. Probably blew it all. She does say in the article she should have kept going for another 5 years till she was more financially mature.

The article isnt even about what a lot of people think its about, she never said she regrets porn per se, just the way people viewed her because of it and how it had an impact on her ability to find work outside the industry.

You really don't understand what this is about do you.

Although most people would not admit knowing her, they might still treat her differently than other neighbors, so moving would probably not change how people treat her.
So where did all the other retired pornstars go that are on twitter living decent lives

I feel bad for her but given the awful history of this industry but what did she expect?!

Society as a whole has been turning on women who pursue a career in porn and then try to become 'civilians' again since the seventies when Deep Throat crossed over to the mainstream, albeit infamously.

Was she expecting some kind of Kardashian style cross over into big money media success? I don't begrudge her experimenting sexually as a young woman but did she really have to let the whole world see her labia as she did so?

Sad, but as inevitable as the setting sun.

If this is the issue with folks in the "traditional" version of the industry, I wonder what comes of those on the audition sites or, better yet, cam girls?

I think if she just eased out of LA, she'd be able to slip into a place where nobody has even heard of her before. I had never heard of her until now.

Not sure what marketable skills she's cultivated since retirement, tough? If she's going to stay around entertainment, she's going to be recognized.

If you're not in the top 500 most popular stars, chances are the average person has never heard of you. How many D-league NBA players or minor league MLB players could you name?

Meanwhile a retired Rob Gronkowski isn't going to slip into a quiet job as a Home Depot manager in his hometown without being mobbed every time he's in public.

What a strange take on the article.

I'm really sympathetic to the kind of shit she's going through, and I've heard many similar stories, almost exclusively from American porn stars. America has a real problem with sexuality in every form, and until this can get normalized I really don't see any hope of Bree Olson's (and other girls of her kind) situation improving.

As far as I understand, European porn stars have to deal with this problem far less (the example of the air stewardess who received the airline's support after being outed as a porn star sticks out in my memory), whereas Japanese porn stars can use porn as a career builder in some regards.

US porn stars sometimes get happy endings too. Some of them have been able to cross over into the mainstream (see Game of Thrones/Westworld actors), some have moved on to sex journalism (working for Vice and publications like that), some have gotten book deals, etc. That's obviously just the 1% of the 1% of porn actors, most obviously aren't that lucky.

That's going to be different for everyone. But if you think an 18-23 year old is going to be more likely to wisely spend millions of dollars than say a 35 year old, I think you'd be mistaken. Really you give anyone who didn't have much money millions of dollars and chances are high that they will not spend it wisely regardless of how old they are.

So should the age to appear in pornography be moved back to 35, then?

Ba-dum psh.

Bree made (or could make, there's a lot of people that exaggerate how much money they made in the industry) that much money because she basically perfectly timed her career. Tube sites didn't really start to take over the industry until around 2011-2012 or so, which is right when her career ended

She retired back then? Where'd all the time go? It's flying by.
