"I live, I love, I slay... I am content."
-Conan of Cimmeria

SYNOPSIS

The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this summer. Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination - in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds - Conan's exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal 3D action-adventure film.

A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

Deftly adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and faithful to the mythology and psychology of his iconic character, CONAN THE BARBARIAN stars Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui and Ron Perlman. The film is directed by Marcus Nispel, and written by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer and Sean Hood.

Hitfix said:
"Conan The Barbarian" is the film equivalent of having someone punch you in the face for two straight hours while someone screams in your ear. Now, if you like that sort of thing, buckle up, because "Conan" is absolutely stark raving mad from the first frame to the last.
Associated Press said:
No one ever turns into a giant snake in the new "Conan the Barbarian." That, in a nutshell, is what's wrong with this remake: The knowing sense of big, ridiculous fun that marked the 1982 original is gone, and in its place we get a self-serious series of generic sword battles and expository conversations.
Variety said:
Audiences headed to a Conan movie already know what they're going to get, so it doesn't make sense to chide those responsible for crafting a work of unrelenting barbarism.... With all earnestness, Nispel embraces the property's classic roots, placing this new "Conan" squarely within the tradition of sword-and-sorcery pics.
Chicago Sun-Times said:
"Conan the Barbarian" is a brutal, crude, witless high-tech CGI contrivance, in which no artificial technique has been overlooked, including 3-D.
Entertainment Weekly said:
...Simultaneously lavishly violent and numbing, visually ornate and undistinguished, epic and shallow, relentlessly noisy and tone-deaf, workmanlike and unfilling... there's something and nothing for everyone in Conan the Barbarian 3D, right down to the afterthought 3-D itself, which brings nothing to the experience except a ticket-price bump.
Chicago Tribune said:
One hundred and 12 minutes of "Aaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhh!"... I've certainly seen worse movies this summer, though I hope that if director Nispel returns to the land of Hyboria he'll learn that sword fights don't respond well to his chaotic brand of staging, made worse by the editing.
TIME said:
A gaudily ornamented medieval banquet table groaning with junk food and open entrails... In this dank ultimate-fighting challenge, Jason Momoa as Conan provides the only visual vivacity; he has an eye-catchingly sensuous face atop the requisite statuesque beefcake.
New York Times said:
[Marcus] Nispel, whose résumé includes a few other slick redos... doesn’t add anything obviously personal to this “Conan,” which was probably just what the producers ordered. What he does bring is the gore and plenty of it as well as some wit and surprisingly O.K. performances, Mr. Lang’s unsmiling turn being the standout.
Los Angeles Times said:
"Conan the Barbarian," starring the excellent rippling chisel of Jason Momoa, is brutal, bloody beyond belief, and has no socially redeeming value. So it is with a certain amount of guilt that I say it's kind of a wicked blast to watch, especially if you're in the mood for some righteous revenge.
NPR said:
...The new Conan the Barbarian doesn't have a fresh take on the material — or any take at all, for that matter. There are swords and sorcery, pirates and monsters, taxed bodices and taxing mythology. In other words, there's the bare minimum necessary to summon this dismal movie into existence.
USA Today said:
Conan the Barbarian lives by a pretty simple ethos: He lives, he loves, he slays. What he doesn't do, alas, is act.
New York Post said:
The original “Conan” was a sloppy, grandiose, unforgivable muckbath directed by the (I say the words lovingly) right-wing maniac John Milius... The reboot (re-sandal?) isn’t good either, exactly. But it has a certain commitment to its cause... It knows it’s a B movie, and gets on with it.
Leonard Maltin said:
This isn’t my favorite kind of entertainment, and some of its violence is extreme, but on the whole Conan the Barbarian is pretty good, for what it is. The screenplay... may not be inspired, but it does what it sets out to do. I’m not sure if Jason Momoa has what it takes to become an A-list star, but he definitely looks the part of Conan.

Going down the principal cast it seems this was intended to be direct to video.

Nothing like coming in and shitting on the dudes thread, which obviously took some time to put together.

I want this to be good so bad. :/

I just...don't know. Posters are fantastic however.

Basing on the visual aesthetic of this movie you can tell the people who are involved in making this are huge Conan fans.

Whether that'll result in good or bad, we'll see.

I am going to call it and say it's going to suck. The only reason Conan was ever good was b/c of Arnold.

and the music and James Earl Jones and Subotai and a camel getting knocked out etc.

Fantastic OP.

I've mentioned it a few times before. This will probably make a killing outside NA. If it isn't horrible, it might do ok in NA as well, but I'm guessing just under 100 mil here after all is said and done. Then who knows how much it will do internationally.

I was all pessimistic about this until I watched Game of Thrones. Momoa's Khal Drogo was fantastic and sold me on him playing Conan.

Did he play a role similar to Conan in Stargate? He is pretty deep into his typecast right now.

Ronan Dex was Conan with a gun. I want to know what the budget was on this movie was.

Wikipedia and The Numbers list the production budget at $80 million, I remember seeing something in a thread about summer movies here that put it at $110 million.

It will be interesting to see if GoT helps if the reviews aren't horrible.

Fantastic OP, but I'm not yet quite sold on the movie yet. I saw the preview at the movies tonight and I'm kind of getting a Predators vibe from it. Then again my knowlede of the Conan universe is strictly based on the Arnold movies, but I've read they aren't really representative of the Conan lore or character. I might watch if it turns out to be faithful to real Conan.

Actually Part of the 300 Score was plagiarized from Elliot Goldenthal

I can't even imagine how awful Bates score is going to be.

Nice OP though.
Bates should have been blacklisted after that, never have I seen such blatant plagiarism from a film composer, only Hans Zimmer comes close after he borrowed heavily from Wagner, Holst and Morricone for Gladiator.

I was one of the seemingly few that was actually looking forward to this when Conan was first cast, thinking that while the Arnold movies were fun, this could potentially harken back to the classic Conan comics....the the trailers featuring cheesy cliched nu-metal hit. Completely killed the interest.

Khal Drogo compels me to give this movie a chance, unless reviews are abysmal. Anyone know if they will actually screen the movie for critics?

Mamoa seems to fit the bill, Conan was described as having panther like agility and actually having a high degree of intelligence for a Cimmerian. Unlike Arnold's depiction of Conan who came across as having the agility of a sloth and the intelligence of a Troglodyte, Conan in name only.

Momoa's performance as Conan will most probably be good but I'm not convinced about anything else yet.

Agreed. I was down on Jason Mamoa because Atlantis sucked, but after Game of Thrones I want to give this a try. Add in Stephen Lang and Ron Perlman and I am more inclined to try it.

I have no idea how to search for critics' screenings, but the LA premiere was Thursday night; also, Google yields results for advance public screenings of the film as early as Tuesday.

Where's Daniel Plainview?

The only reason I will give this a watch (on cable or something down the line) is for Stephen Lang. The reviews have to be stellar for me to give this a chance, because it looks like garbage.

I feel the opposite. I have a feeling this is going to be good. Khal Drogo ftw!

The rated R means I have hope for this movie to not suck, if it was PG-13 it would've been doomed upon inception.

Khal Drogo helps too.

There's LOTS of nudity in it. There are set photos of Conan in some tavern and all the wenches are topless.

Good? You mean so-bad-it's-good, right?

I love me some Conan, but it's terrible.

Marketing has left me entirely uninspired. It will have to receive stellar reviews for me to see it in cinemas.
