Release Date: Februrary 22, 2012
Required: Half-Life (Steam)

Cry of Fear is a first person survival horror game created by the mind behind the frightening Half-Life modification, Afraid of Monsters. The main dev Rumpel has since recruited a team to take on a second goldsrc project seen as a spiritual sequel to his first mod. Cry of Fear has been in development for almost 4 years now with a final release date announced a couple months ago (through means of getting Likes on Facebook).

Most of the gameplay should be pretty similar to AoM, pop-out scares, a great atmosphere, and scarce ammo for weapons. Multiple endings to the single-player are possible and during the later months of development the team managed to add in a 4 player co-op campaign completely separate from the single-player. The graphic work applied to the original half-life engine is absolutely incredible, I remember being blown away when I saw the first ingame screenshot released.

Earlier donations also added access to a special donator-only weapon. The option is still available but donators will be coded in sometime after release.

A nice preview write-up from ModDB

Finally out? Have been looking forward to it for about a year or so.
Will have to grab that a bit later on today.

Looks like an AWESOME concept. There is one thing that bothers me about this. Like it literally almost makes me un-interested.

SLOW THAT SHIT DOWN.

Seriously, what is this? Unreal tournament? Survival horror should feel like a frag fest, unless I'm missing the point??

EDIT: CO-OP looks very impressive though.

Those sound effects...wow. This really does seem like it would be co-op, especially with voice chat. The scream reactions would be priceless.

Looks really good. On the fence about getting HL1 on steam because of this, worth it?

Yes i'm poor atm, shut up.

Half Life has a lot of good old mods to play (Sven Co-Op, Natural Selection, Resident Evil Cold Blood, The Specialists etc.) so I would say yes.

You could probably get a Steam coupon from somebody as well to get some money off it seeing as the coupons expire soon.

Looked up Sven Co-op and RE:CB, good reception and they seem pretty neat. I'm convinced.

Got a coupon from a fellow gaffer and umeåbo Spode, thanks bro!

I thought Cry of Fear had a pretty good horror atmosphere to it, and I felt like it was influenced by Silent Hill 2 most of the time. I read a lot about it having too many cheap jump scares but I honestly didn't feel there was a whole lot of that (or it was just too easy for me to predict). The soundtrack for this mod is also amazing; they did a really great job with it.

My first run took me almost 6 hours, but it will probably take around 2 hours if you know exactly what to do. Regardless, I recommend anyone that owns HL1 to give it a try.

I have a couple -50% Valve coupons if anyone is interested in buying HL1 just to play the mod.

Old as shit but this game is freakkky.
I haven't played through it in a few years but with October around the corner, I'm wanting to do another co-op playthrough.
Would any gaffers be down??
