The suit needs to pick some kind of skin tone, right?

So racist why is this John Cena white and not see through
"DISNEY MAKES COSTUMES FOR ALL CHARACTERS EXCEPT THE POLYNESIAN ONE!!"It's probably the only way to properly display all of those intricate tattoos. That said, it probably also would have been better to, you know, let this one slide and not make the costume to begin with. But hey, there's profit to be had.
BocoDragon said:Disney should just keep making movies starring white people. It isn't worth the cultural appropriation blowback.
You want kids running around in their underwear in a clear suit on Halloween?I think it's more for the tattoos?
edit: oh I guess it could be clear yeah
Yeah, no one would criticize this if they just make the skin portion see through. Then it's just a grass bottom with some tattoos.

On little children.
On little children running around wearing just a grass skirt with all of their skin exposed.
On little boys and girls running around wearing just a grass skirt with all of their skin exposed.
Have some of you even bothered to think this through?
Remove the costume from the shelf. Remove the character from the movie. It's not that hard.
This ridiculious outrage culture gets worse every day. Every day there is new thread on GAF where people get upset over the stupidest things. Like, do you guys go on the Internet specifically to look for things to be outraged over?
Disney puts out as representative Maui costume that their Halloween merchandising people come up with:
You can't have whites, blacks and Asians, etc putting on a Samoan bodysuit! Children shouldn't be appropriating another skin color!
Clear suit or just tattoo set
What's wrong with the skin color? Would you be ashamed having a child masquerading and idolizing a fictional character/culture diety? Yet you're perfectly fine with appropriating everything else about the culture? And whybrid is Disney wanting my child to be exposed? My little girl likes Maui more than Moana, but can't because Disney are narrow minded sexists.
No Maui costume
Why doesn't Disney represent that culture? Is it the skin color? Are they closet Imperialists? White washing Doctor Strange and now this! Outrage!

It's like...people are getting outraged at what they perceive to be a race/culture issue, and then throw solutions out that areperhaps just as if notmore so racially and culturally insensitive.
Looks fine to me. But the disembodied bodysuit is pretty creepy, agreed.
I'm reminded of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_Gonzales#Concern_about_stereotypesFunniest part is, Polynesians probably couldn't care less.
It speaks volumes the difference in actitudes between the start of the thread and now.
Gross

Honestly, this is 100% a no-win situation for Disney. Let's look at their options with this.
1. They release the costume as is with the character-appropriate skin tone: People get outraged about "blackface" and the skin tone
2. They release it without a tone or with a different tone: People get outraged about "whitewashing" or misrepresenting the character
3. They don't release a costume at all: People say that Disney finally does a movie about a new culture, but then complain that the company doesn't properly represent them with a costume the way they do with other movies featuring white leads.
The only real recourse would be to redesign the character and it's both too late for that and also designing a character solely based on "what would make for the most inoffensive costume" is a dumb idea.
Exactly my thoughts. Of the choices, Disney made the right one. Kids get to dress like the character they love, there's no ill intent behind it.
May as well just ban Halloween.
Kids dressing a Dracula? That's offensive to Romanians!
Can't they make multiple versions of the costume for different skin tones?
