Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection announced for Wii

They sell more?
It's not that big of a difference. NSMB DS has sold about 6.1 million. NSMB Wii has sold 4.17 million, DQ9 sold 4.14. Mario Galaxy games have of course struggled to hit 1 million. I think Mario has the potential to sell more, but in the modern climate, isn't the juggernaut it once was.

Regardless, this collection will sell a decent amount.

Yeah, 2D Mario's definitely much bigger.
3D Marios aren't, but then Mario spinoffs are also much, much bigger than Dragon Quest spinoffs.

Super Mario 64 DS and Famicom Mini Super Mario Bros sold on par with the Dragon Quest remakes on DS.
Aside from that, the only other ports/remakes (that I have data for anyways) were on GBA, when Mario wasn't as popular (as evident by the fact that a limited print ROM dump on Wii sold more than any of the Super Mario Advance games).

I'd just like to point out that the DQ3 remake is one of the most beautiful games ever made. It's done in the same style as DQ6, but IMO looks just a tad better overall. Brilliant art direction, and some of the best sprite animations out there during battles.

They could use the translations from the GBC ports.

... not really. Those translations are really barebones (to make the text readable yet not overwhelming on the tiny GBC screen). Even if the script could be used as-is, getting the text into the SNES ROM is no small feat of engineering.

I can tell you with unabashed dorkiness that I was 8 years old when I received my first copy of Nintendo Power (the one with Nicholson's Joker face on the cover) and my copy of Dragon Warrior in the mail (not sure if they were the same).

I was in love.

Aeana said:
It won't come out in NA because the SFC versions aren't translated.
They could translate them, you know.

I'd buy that so much... :(

Those games could be in the disc too... But they'll sell them on the 3DS :p.

These games are almost assuredly ROMs running in an emulator. They are unlikely to actually recompile the SNES binaries with a new script (very common in Japan for source code to be lost for older games), and they are unlikely to brute-force hack it like the fans do either.

Yuji Naka still remembers his codes :(.

Don't get too excited. It's the Famicom versions of Dragon Quest 1-3 and the Super Famicom remakes of those games, packaged together on a disc a la the Mario Anniversary collection.

Where do I sign?

2D and 3D Mario are not the same type of game. 2D Mario is still doing insane numbers.

Mother of god.
What I'm wondering is will it be published outside japan ?

who am I kidding? Of course not !

They should release the PS2 versions of DQ8, DQ5 and heck maybe that Yangus game as an HD collection for the PS3.

Only way I can see this coming out in English is if they decide to use the fan translations. With Square Enix or Nintendo as potential publishers I doubt this will ever happen, though.

I still want to play DQ I - III sometime. If this gets an English release I can stop searching for the GameBoy remakes, but I fear the worst.

This is such an obvious choice for a ds remake - not like they can't run the games there, DQ games(including spin-offs) have had better sales on DS.

Anyone think the reason we are seeing this on the wii is a test for how well DQX can sell?

No this is a ROM dump to take advantage of the Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary.

No.

The reason this is being released on the Wii is to drive up anticipation for Dragon Quest X, not to see how well Dragon Quest X will sell on the system.

Its just Square-Enix way of showing being incapable of developing a new entry for its 25th birthday and their desire to cash in with a cheap effort like Nintendo last year ROM dump.

Yeah, but it's just as easy to rom dump this stuff onto a ds as it is WII, if you were looking at this purely sales wise, wouldn't ds be a better choice of platform?

Personally there is little chance I'm going to play this on my wii, if it was ds it would be an instant buy.

Yeah, if they wanted to maximize sales on this dump it'd be DS, but its also being used as a lure to Wii for DQX sake. On DS they had really good escorts (DQ4-5,Joker...), on Wii they only did the Arcade game recently and it didn't do that hot so they must be desperate to throw something DQ at Wii before DQX. Desperation to build DQ fanbase in Wii + unable to develop escort titles + unable to develop a grand 25th anniversary entry on time + envy of Nintendo ROM dump making mad cash = DQ1-3 rom dump for Wii in 2011.

Besides, they'll have to update all the monster/location/character/spell names to match the new translation style started with DQ8. Like changing Dharma Shrine to Alltrades Abbey.

Good news for me if they bring this over!

I've been meaning to play through DQ I-III. Sign me up!

This. The first three Dragon Quest games of the ones I don't own yet, so I will definitely pick this up if it is released in America for a reasonable price.

Perfect reaction, actually, hahaha.

I'll probably get the game anyway just for collection purposes.

That wouldn't make sense. The franchise sticks to one platform at a time. Currently, it's Wii, and next is 3DS.

Yeah, same here... curious to see what the bonus items are...

Sucks it probably won't come out in the US - DQ3 SFC is fucking amazing, absolutely beautiful 2D spritework and animation.

Since the chances of a NA release for this are pretty much zero I will probably import a copy to add to my collection. It is shame they are not using this as an excuse to do remakes since this would allow for a release in other regions and definitely more sales than a ROM dump.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. DQ is definitely quicker about it, though.

Right. While being 98% cheaper than something like a DQVII remake.

Swords did fine back in 2007--they just never followed it up with much. Battle Road Victory was still on par with other side games like PS2's Yangus or DS's Rocket Slime.

Looking to get into the series and I suppose this wouldn't be a bad place to start, that if at all it makes it to Europe.

That's the thing about building it, they did a one-off 4 years ago and that was it until the arcade game, which they overshipped and quickly got to the bomba bins. Yangus was a post-main-DQ release, no need to build anything just cash some more money on the system last legs, see Joker 2 International on DS.

I wish they would release DQ 1 - 3 on the DS so I can have 7 out of 9 DQs on the same platform. Of course, I wish I was lucky enough to get this in Europe in the first place.

Its not one ROM dump, its 6. Take that Super Mairo All-Stars. But otherwise literilly the only expense is getting the emulator off Nintendo (I'd assume they would their emulator rather than write one themselves).

5, actually (FC 1, 2, and 3, plus SFC 1&2 (they weren't released separately, they were combined like the later GBC port), and 3)

I will buy this if it comes out in PAL.

Ideally though, I would have loved a Wii port of Dragon Quest 8 with expanded content and upgraded graphics, including less empty environments. Heck, and do away with random encounters while you're at it.

Square Enix is celebrating Dragon Quest's 25th anniversary with more than just the recently announced Wii compilation of the first three games. Retailers have revealed some sweet commemorative Dragon Quest series goods for release later this year.

So far, we know of three items:

Happy Birthday Slime Big Sofbee
¥8,950, release in June. A 1/1 size slime with a radius of 30 centimeters.
Dragon Quest Legend Items Gallery Special Loto Helmet
¥13,440, release in July. A replica of the Loto Helmet that appears in Dragon Quest. It's a full size recreation (but I don't think you should actually stick you head in it).
1/1 Loto Symbol
¥10,500, release in June. A 1 to 1 replica of the Loto no Shirushi item.
