Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS) |OT| Cor Blimey!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
How long is this game minus the optional content?

I beat DQVII 3DS at 60 hours.

A bit late, but it should be noted that due to the perspective of VII bring different than VIII's, there are some areas that you can't turn the camera 360 degrees, or at all IIRC. This is most commonly found in dungeons.

I completely forgot about not being able to adjust the camera in areas like dungeons! Hopefully tauroxd hasn't bought the game yet. Arrrgh. Sorry about that.

Actually, I have a question about alchemy in VIII--I know that there are some new recipes in the 3DS version, but does the game provide any information on them or do I just need to rely on looking at a guide for them?

Let's see if I can screw up the answer to this question too. 8D

Unlike IX, the bookshelves don't give you all the recipes. You either have to experiment to figure them out or use a guide. Experimentation is fairly easy because, when you select an ingredient, the game grays out all the ingredients which don't combine with it.

Yeah, the alchemy is a huuuuge improvement over the original. I remember the original being so vague with a lot of the recipes or straight up not telling you them.

Would prefer to not use a guide but I'll probably end up doing so so I don't miss any of the alt outfits. Definitely want to get Yangus'!

Thanks! I have not bought it yet, but it is not like it is impossible to move the character, it is just annoying and with the L and R rotation/steering this is not a problem at all.

There's a guide on GameFAQs which might help. I managed to get through it without a guide but I err on the side of over-leveling. I do remember I had to heal like crazy and one person croaked on the turn before I defeated her. So it was very close.

BOSS: Empyrea (Recommended level: 35)
~2750 HP, 10150 experience, 0 gold, drops Seed of Magic
Attacks: Talon Grab (100-200 damage), Zap (50-65 damage to all), Midheal (70-80 HP recovered), Flash (Dazzle on all party members), Kafuddle (confusion on all party members), Disruptive Wave (removes all buffs from your party)

Empyrea is extremely resistant to physical attacks, so this is a good fight for magic instead. Having high-quality armor is a high priority, as she can really rake up the damage with her attacks if you're lagging in the defense department. Since Empyrea uses Disruptive Wave, Psyching Up is a no-go unless you're feeling very lucky. Kabuff is a good use of Yangus since he's not much help otherwise in this battle (you can't Sap or otherwise drop Empyrea's defense). One good tactic is to have Morrie use Intensso on Jessica, so she can blast Empyrea with a powerful attack spell like Kafrizzle. If you're very unlucky (ie. me), Empyrea will spam Kafuddle and leave you with a self-destructive team for a lot of the fight. Persevere and you will succeed!

I'm at the first Dholmagus fight and my party is like Lv 25-26. Is this doable? I've gotten Wiped Out twice now, but I think if I mix up my strategies I may be able to do it.

It's tough because Angelo is the only with with a Full Heal and nobody else has any group healing spells...

You'll want to get up at least 1 level for the hero to learn Full Heal probably.

Even then it's a tough fight

Okay, so I did that and got Full Heal. But I didn't realize
there's another form after that and you don't heal inbetween!

So I let my two year old grind metal slimes. Lol she just loves mashing A and watching the animations and then exclaiming "I won!" after the battle! It's cute.

So... the photograph quest involving
Stella
is pretty crappy. It's a shame because I've overall enjoyed this sidequest.

That said, first time I've beaten DQVIII since it originally came out and my first time I've really tried the post game content. Morrie is an absolute beast on these bosses and Jessica with Sudden Death is no slouch either.

The PS2 version will obviously look prettier emulated, but I would go with the 3DS version. The additions and QoL improvements make it the definitive version for me.

Thinking about getting this, would be my first dragon quest game.
Is it better to play this 3ds version or emulated on a PC?

I think the orchestral soundtrack is crucially important. I'm pretty sure the 3DS doesn't have it so I would recommend PC unless you're willing to patch.

Orchestra is nice but the 3DS version simply adds so much more. The faster battles and lack of random encounters alone make it the better experience, unless you are bothered by the midi soundtrack THAT much.

Oh dam it was the music that got me looking at the game c:
Hard choice for me it seems, but thanks for the replies guys! I will check out the 3DS versions of the tracks.

I'm rather late to this party, but I finally put together ~55hrs of play time to finish the game. Gotta say it remains one of the finest jrpg experiences I've ever had. There's a lot of moaning and groaning about the 3DS these days and it's old hardware and low-res screens, but it honestly manages to capture the game beautifully. After getting the orchestra music patched back in, I never thought once that I'd rather be playing it on the PS2.

Whats some suggested builds for the party? I'm looking at doing all of the post game when I get there but I just cant settle on where to spend my skill points.

Casino is really the best way.

This is the quickest way from earlier in thead.

Basically, get as many tokens as you can (Cash and Carrie will give you some after you do their quest, then you can just gamble + abuse quicksave for more). 18,000 is ideal, but it's okay if you have less.

Then:

1. Go to the roulette table and quicksave.

2. Place your tokens like this in stacks of 500. (If you don't have 18,000 yet, just try to spread them out as evenly as you can in this pattern)

(here's an alternate picture showing 21500 tokens, but it's a bit more risky)

3. There's a decent chance you'll get 40,000+ tokens from spinning the wheel. If so, quicksave; if not, reset.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 as needed.

Just beat my first Dragon Quest game yesterday. It was DQ, so I'm moving on to 8. I played a bit back on PS2 when it first came out but got distracted by other games. Never got terribly far.

Played the first bit of the game, through the first boss, and even though I played the 7 remake this already feels like a massive generational leap in almost every way. Even though the OST is still midi it already sounds better. Graphics look so different. Voice acting adds a lot. Also love that the menus don't have crazy lag.
