EA teases new BioWare project [It's Mass Effect 3]

well to be honest Mass Effect FPS can be really big ,and the series is already about space military and shooting so It's not that bad.

now if EA decided to do Dragon Age 3: Grey Wardenfare as FPS set in future ruled by archdemon army , now that will be something.

Do you think the fans will tolerate a genre change like that? ME and FPS.. its like raisins and popcorn. Pretty risky.

If I can lift someone with biotics and shoot them with a shotgun in multiplayer then this game will be worth it. Different races, biotics, guns and load outs...great concept for a mulitplayer shooter. ME2 felt damn close to a top-notch shooter (when you got a headshot it really felt like it), I've little doubt they can pull this off.

Fallout 3, GTA 3, Resident Evil 4, Duke Nukem 3D, World of Warcraft, and Red Dead Redemption were all pretty vast departures from their previous iterations.

This has blown up on people in the past, but there's definitely a precedent for success as well.

The key is to actually make a good game in the genre you switch to.

If they do go multiplayer, hope they keep it third-person. Third-person squad-based multiplayer with levels and biotic/tech powers... could be interesting.

Yeah, but I think they'll make Gears of Effect and I already have it in ME. Multiplayer doesn't help.

But that's just me.

Exactly. And since this isn't a replacement for Mass Effect 3, which BioWare Edmonton is working on, where's the harm to the core series? Larger fanbase?

Halo Wars didn't harm the Halo brand, it sold a million copies, enough for a sequel anyway. It's not like this is DISSIDIA Mass Effect, it's taking the well functioning mechanic of a proven IP and making it multiplayer. Someone should try to claim the futuristic military shooter before Call of Duty Future Warfare gets here.

Man, if they do something we've known they were doing for a very long time now, I'm going to have a completely over the top and disproportionate response about how this is the end of gaming as we know it.

Am I doing it right?

meh, i don't mind them doing a multiplayer game. it's just a massive personal disappointment, as i only care for sp games and was hoping for more mass effect goodness :'(

Not risky at all, they pretty much almost did it already with how much of the RPGness was taken out of the second one...even though they want to include more RPG features in the thrid.

This change or merger of genres is a way to pull in another market to the already established story and universe. I just hope that if it is indeed this MP focused spin-off that if it does include SP it is still very solid when it comes to its story elements, if so this could be something special.

I'm such a Mass Effect whore at this point I'd probably purchase it even with shit reviews, I even bought Mass Effect Galaxy eventually (though it was on sale)

However unless it's purely multiplayer focused or something akin to Borderlands, the only way I could have less interest in a Mass Effect FPS is if it was instead an ME RTS.

Hmm. I'm still hoping that guy's a potential squadmate for ME3, and this is not some damn spin-off... Until the trilogy is finished, I have no interest in silly spin-offs. BioWare, give me Mass Effect 3.

Well, that's the incisor rifle, the armor pattern is pretty Mass Effect like, and the Twitter clues point to things in the Mass Effect universe.

Also, they locked the thread on this in the Dragon Age general forum, noting it wasn't Dragon Age related, while leaving the one in the Mass Effect general forum open.

I actually would love to see a multiplayer FPS set in the Mass Effect universe. You can go on hating me for this, but I grew up with FPS and I love the genre. People always complain about FPS, but it's where I find the most enjoyment.

Oh. That is a shame.

Also, that render is really ugly.

I thought it would be something like this after all the rumours that Bioware Montreal were working on Mass Effect multiplayer and a military FPS. So it seems plausible.

I think it's for the better as well. This way Bioware Edmonton can focus on Mass Effect 3 without the need to streamline the game further by shoehorning a multiplayer component into it and they can focus on adding richer RPG features that Christina Norman was mentioning. Which is absolutely what I want. It's also not surprising considering Greg and Ray mentioned that multiplayer is a possibility in the universe and that there would be games outside the main trilogy.

They can maintain and build a multiplayer component / userbase through these games (as well as updates / sequels), and leave the trilogy as is. They can do whatever they want.

I'll probably end up purchasing it mainly because I'm a huge Mass Effect fan, the multiplayer component may be interesting with biotics etc and the single player portion would definitely be interesting.

But my main interest is any ME 2 DLC and ME 3. Which I don't expect until early 2012. Maybe later.

I'm going to guess this comes out in either Q2 or Q3 and Mass Effect 3 is coming out in March 2012.

I'm leaning toward Q2 since John Schappert mentioned that there was something far reaching from the Mass Effect universe for Q1 2011 in their first earnings call of the year, but mentioned that they moved some things in and out of the fiscal year in the next call, with this probably being one of the ones that was moved out.

Yeah, you're probably right there. I'd expect this, ME 2 PS3 obviously and ME 2 DLC next year bridging the gap to ME 3. It makes me wonder when they'll reveal ME 3 though.

They were looking for multiplayer designers for Mass Effect. We saw those ads around the same time they were looking for SPU specialists for their engine team.

I think we´re done with Mass 2 DLC.

Shadow Broker was the bridge I think. Or the new shooter will be.

Mass Shooter in March 11.

Mass 3 between November 11 and March 12.

I think there will be more DLC, Greg and Ray practically confirmed as much. Also Bioware said there would be multiple DLCs that bridge into ME 3 and that Shadow Broker would be the first. But the plan may have changed. They've been focusing on ME 2 PS3 for now.

EA's actually revealed their release schedule through March, so the earliest this could come out is April.

I'm thinking either May or June myself with an E3 reveal for Mass Effect 3.

I'm also imagining a beta packed in with Dragon Age 2 and/or Mass Effect PS3.

Anything that is Mass Effect related I will purchase Day 1, hopefully it doesn't ditch Bioware's RPG heritage though in the process :D

Congratulations Bioware, you have officially jumped the shark.

Pretty much. Between the direction ME2 took and this news, its like Bioware couldn't be drifting further from my tastes as a gamer.

Mass Effect: Black Ops? Motherfucking PASS.

Mass Effect 3 is likely to be the last title Im interested in from Bioware in the foreseeable future.

If their boards is any indication, they could just make a Serious Sam clone and sprinkle it with interspecies romance. At that point, 90% of their fanbase wouldn't notice the difference.

Make as many games in as many genres as you like. Just dont slap Mass Effect onto them.

This news makes me even less optimistic for ME3 now, despite the fact that the two projects are unrelated.

I haven't visited Bioware's forums since they became part of EA and became fucking awful a year or so back.

I visit them once or twice a year, around big releases. Last time I checked, the main Dragon Age 2 discussion was something along the line of "Where will we have sex now that there is no tent to sleep in?". Yeah.

Relax!

2 different teams are working on 2 different games within the Mass Effect universe.

How does this affect your optimism towards ME3?

If ( IF! ) this means anything than propably that Mass 3 will be more of an RPG since the new game seems ( SEEMS! ) to be more action focused.

But we don´t know anything yet.

The Mass Effect boards is one of the most scary places on the internet.

I realize that this is a Montreal (?) production while ME3 will stay in Edmonton, but what worries me is that the existence of this game makes me think Bioware is going to up the shooter quotient of ME3 even more.

Mass Effect is a universe like Star Wars, they can make any game they want. It's like saying that making Tie Fighter somehow affects KOTOR role-playing systems.
