Nice thread ilndamy5mrrmr, I only just noticed it :3 I'll make a conscious effort to keep up with this one now too.

I'm going to follow this more closely as I am thirsty for some new EDM as most of my stuff is very, very old. Here's some of the albums I regularly listen to, would love some recommendations based on these if anyone has any! I do admittedly listen to the mostly mainstream stuff.

Jes Brieden really is one of my favourite vocalists in the game for trance. I don't know why but I just love almost everything she puts out. There is another song by Tiesto called Just Be featuring Kirsty Hawkshaw that I also love though I've not found anything with her in it that I've enjoyed besides this song.

I used to be really into Guetta and Calvin Harris, though as time goes on their production and their beats are becoming rather samey and it's becoming more and more disappointing as they put more stuff out. I was a bit disappointed by Armin's latest single too :(

I just saw this popping up at my Twitter feed, extremely high quality video. Very well done.

The Tomorrowland 2013 after movie is worth watching as well, even if you don't like EDM. Extreme high production value as well and awesome cinematography. It's 20 minutes long but worth watching, right now it has more than 60m views.
ID&T has always had amazing production design on their festivals and were the very first to invest deep in audiovisual documentation of their events. It's been a trip seeing them rise from their fairly basic early events with crappy video montages to the unbelievable productions they have nowadays. Same counts for their sister company Q-Dance who have actually been even more progressively setting the bar higher and higher.

I absolutely adore their aftermovie production of Q-Dance at EDC Las Vegas despite personally disliking the actual hardstyle events themselves.

edit//
also, to give an example of where they've come from, here's the video of the 2003 Mystery Land event (which has been the template from which Tomorrowland was ultimately born) which was the first event in it's new incarnation (it used to be a differently styled festival):
Mysteryland 2003 Aftermovie

(upped the video from my own personal collection as it's not online elsewhere anymore)

If you're interested in the early roots of the festival here's a (dutch) documentary with some very old footage of the raver days;

The video for beam me up may have been the first time I fell in love. http://youtu.be/mp-IZEFqrG0?t=46s

But to answer your question, weapon and surrender are also awesome. Weapon has such catchy lyrics. I'm always singing in the car when I listen to them.

Ooh I can't believe I forgot about Weapon. Great song.

Nice to see some love for The Presets! I got into them while I was studying abroad in Australia, although that's the only album of theirs I've really liked (Apocalypso).

Motherfucker, Armin is doing his warm-up set live in Den Bosch? That ass, I wanted him to do a live warm-up set in NYC.

Sup Nemesisbro. You should check out Kaskade's new album Fire & Ice, it's quite good. If you like female vocalists then I pretty much like anything that has Nadia Ali, Emma Hewitt, and Ellie Goulding. Here's a few things I can recommend:

Arty, Nadia Ali & BT - Must Be The Love

Nadia Ali - Rapture (Avicii Remix) - although the original is superior IMO: iiO - Rapture

Dash Berlin feat. Emma Hewitt - Waiting

Emma Hewitt - Colours (Armin van Buuren Remix)

Ellie Goulding - High For This (Monsieur Adi Remix)

Ellie Goulding - Lights (Bassnectar Remix)

Yeah mainstage. It's funny because I've never actually watched a European festival live and the crowd is muuuuuch older than it is in the US. I haven't seen a single teenager so far lol.

Pacifica was one of my biggest disappointments of the DECADE. :(

i was underwhelmed by it at first; but it's really grown on me since. seeing them live not long after it came out really solidified my enjoyment of that album.

seeing them in may with a meet and greet, can't wait!

Oooh, yes! Thank you! I appreciate it, in the other threads I was paid dust when I asked around. I forgot about Nadia Ali and iiO. I didn't realise she was still active - I only knew of Rapture and another song called "At The End" or something.

It's almost 4am here, so I better sleep, but I'll be listening to these tomorrow :3

To anyone jonesing for what is guaranteed to be 12 solid hours of incredible progressive house/trance/breaks and psy-trance, you DO NOT want to miss this:

I figured I should post about my favorite group of all time, Hybrid. Thanks to John Rabbit's Underworld post for providing a good template idea for this!

HYBRID
WvbS5ke.jpg

Who are Hybrid?
Currently, Hybrid is comprised of Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Charlotte James on vocals. They are well known for their epic orchestral tracks, all pretty much using a real orchestra. Their tracks range from breaks to house to trance and even movie scores over the years. They are also pretty well known for doing a lot of remixes.

How have they changed over the years with their albums?
They have had a whole bunch of small lineup changes/additions over the years with each album, as well as genere changes:
Album 1, Wide Angle (1999) (Dark, orchestral breaks): Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Lee Mullin. Heavy vocals from Julee Cruise and a track with Chrissie Hynde.
Album 2, Morning Sci-Fi (2003) (A bit more "rock"): Mike Truman, Chris Healings with Adam Taylor on vocals and Peter Hook (yes, the New Order one) on bass.
Album 2, I Choose Noise (2006) (A bit more "house"): Mike Truman, Chris Healings and composer Harry Gregson-Williams. Guests vocalists include Perry Farrell, John Graham (Quivver), Judie Tzuke and Kirsty Hawksahw.
Album 4, Disappear Here (2010) (A bit more "film score"): Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Charlotte James on vocals.
Also note that two albums have two CD expanded editions released later (like "Wide Angle" becoming "Wider Angle" and "Disappear Here" becoming "Disappear Here: Widescreen Edition").

What else have they done, besides the main four albums?
They have released two compilations of their remixes, "Remix And Additional Production By..." in 2001 and "Hybrid RE_MIXED" in 2007.
They have two DJ mix albums, "Hybrid Present: Y4K" in 2004 and "Soundsystem 01" in 2008.
They have released one mega best-of compilation in 2012 called "Classics" which can be found in 1, 4 or 5 CD versions.
They have also contributed to film scores, some with Harry Gregson-Williams (and a lot of Tony Scott movies), such as "Man On Fire", "Domino", "Deja Vu", "Catacombs", "The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", "Fast Five", "Cowboys & Aliens", "Total Recall" and a whole lot more. Game credits include "Lotus Challenge" and "Ghost Recon: Future Soldier"
And finally, they have released tons of remixes, as you can see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_remixed_by_Hybrid

Okay, I really like what I'm hearing, where do I start?
onkbgdh.jpg

You can't go wrong with the 1 CD edition of "Classics" which compiles most of the tracks from above! Then go for the albums of course :)

Delving deeper, the other discs of "Classics" are great to branch out with too:
Disc 2 is "Orchestral" and is full of pure orchestral versions of a bunch of songs.
Disc 3 is "Instrumental + Remixes" and has some previously unreleased instrumentals (note: They often have instrumental versions of most of their tracks to buy online) as well as some unreleased VIP mixes and the crown jewel, a song from "Wide Angle" that was never put on, "Experiment IV".
Disc 4 is "Cinematic Soundscape" and highlights tracks used in movie scores, games and more "ambient" tracks.

After that, the two remix albums, especially "Remix And Additional Production By..." are good places to start with their remixes, and the two mix CDs are good if you are into that.

Any final words?
Just enjoy the music! It's a lot to take in, especially with the whole mess of remixes out there!
A great website to start is http://www.breakbeatpolice.com/, a fan site detailing just about every released and unreleased track there is, including links on where to buy them.
Of course their official website is a great place to keep an eye on: http://www.hybridsoundsystem.com/. They often have some free tracks to download, such as "Blind Side", a track that was made before the album "Disappear Here".

switch it to the MP3 player, I haven't had any problems.

Anybody else listening to Arctic Moon? the feeeeeeeeeeels

I'm listening to Andrew Rayel, he's doing really well. Playing some extremely good remixes, I'll have to download his set once it's available.

I'm also browsing the internet for rave gear. I bought a bunch of neon colored wristbands earlier this week, so I'm trying to stock up before EDC NY.

They just showed a sec all the four areas, they seemed full and Armin itself said all areas are full. Thats awesome.

hybrid stuff

great write-up Rukes, i love hybrid, but more of their older material. i felt disappear here was fairly...formulaic, but i know many people love it, especially my girlfriend. finished symphony is one of the all-time greatest tracks ever committed to vinyl/disc.

i once met chris healings after a DJ set he did here in scottsdale. dude was so appreciative and friendly. we talked at length about some of the other performances i'd seen hybrid at and was just a genuinely nice guy. their 2006 coachella performance was before I Choose Noise had officially dropped and they had Harry Gregson-Williams, Perry Ferrell, AND Quivver all come up on stage at some point for their respective songs. i have a towel that perry ferrell threw onto my head during the show that i still take to coachella every year.

*goes off to listen to wide angle/wider angle*

I have no freaking clue how to make kandi bracelets.

I'm actually considering wearing a union suit to EDC haha. I also wanna make myself a Cazzette necklace.

But I'm still looking around...

BTW did sound on mainstage stop for anyone?

You just buy the stretchy string and beads and then put whatever beads/letters you want on it haha. It's more fun if you do it with friends. Then you have shit to trade with other ravers. Sounds kind of lame typing it out...but its awesome when ur there lol.

Sounds been fine for me, although the 138 stream cut out :(

You going to see Armin at the Amphitheater in May? Trying to get a group going and would love to see some EDM-GAF there as well.

I might skip out on Armin since I saw him at EDC, low on funds, might save my pennies to hit up Sunset Music Festival in the end of May.
