Anyone with any historical perspective on 16bit RPGs would agree. The game doesn't even have animated enemies in 1994 for fucks sake. It still had crappy sprite art that shook at you.
You must have a very, very short list of 16-bit RPGs you find acceptable. Nevermind 8-bit.

Some JoJo ASB:

Funny Valentine Combo/Set-Up exhibit and then a set VS Johnny Joestar.

Funny Valentine was considered to be in the bottom tier in this game by many throughout the game's life. However, as more tricks are discovered, he's proving that the tiers in this game are very close to each other. Overall he's meant to be played as a turtle, while collecting corpse parts to make the opponent antsy and make a mistake. Like the other Part 7 characters, collecting corpse parts will give buffs to Valentine. One part reduces the rate the guard gauge depletes, so he can block more. Two parts boosts his defense a bit. If he collects all three parts, he gets a super-buff called Love Train. Valentine is enveloped in a glowing light that grants him invincibility to all non-HHA/GHA projectiles so long as he isn't attacking. It also reduces ALL damage to him by 30% (it used to be 70%). On top of that, many of Valentines moves came out and recover faster, along with some moves gaining new properties (flag slam becomes an overhead). This leads players to believe that the whole point of Valentine is to collect the parts, or die trying. This is a very limited way of looking at him, however, as the psychology or 'yomi' of the opponent knowing you want the parts can give you openings to blow them up. On his own, Valentine still does pretty good damage, including a 70% 3 bar combo. He has some great pokes to harass the opponent and convert into combos, and some shenanigans involving his flag moves. He still has some not so great match-ups, mainly small characters that are too short to be hit by his gunshots. Other Part 7 characters can give him trouble as well, as not only can they hold onto corpse parts themselves to prevent Love Train, they too get big buffs from them.

I made a video a while back that goes over some other things with Valentine, if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LN9J8MmwiU
Thanks for posting this stuff! Seeing a game like All-Star Battle actually having high level play is fascinating, and your analysis is really helpful. Just letting you know that whenever you make one of these posts I tend to watch and read the whole thing.

Anyone else really wishing a good arena fighter would finally get made?

Like, seeing that latest footage from the upcoming Naruto game

I keep thinking, man if would be fun to use those jumping/wall running movement options to be chasing down human opponents and fight them on these meaningful environments with verticality and 3D space for cover and such. It's so underused, and has potential to feel much more fresh than what SF2's conventions or the same with a sidestep can deliver.

The game probably won't be good though.

Hoping Absolver delivers.

Nemo quit his salaryman job to focus on gaming full time.

edit: oh man, Nemo's now ex-boss words to him as he departs: "You're not a regular salaryman-you should take a challenge on what you love doing. Can't wait to see your work worldwide!" ;_;

That's a sweet thing to say on the way out. I hope everything goes well for him. I want to see him take Urien all the way!

I never thought that would happen. Hope he still gets to wear a suit while competing vs wearing those dumb e-sports shirt/jersey.

Also, I had to put sunscreen on my hair now. Anyone else have to do this?

Man...

In the hour or so I spent playing ARMS I just kept wishing that I was playing Virtual On instead.

ARMS is a fun game but it gets boring pretty quick IMO, only good in short burst sessions. I started playing Anarchy Reigns again to get my arena based action again.

My biggest issue with ARMS is how slow the punches feel.

I bought it and tried it but I don't really enjoy it all that much.

After playing the test punch demo, I decided against it. While it seems kinda fun in short bursts, it's more a party game to me, not something I could get into.
