I was thinking I wouldn't, but I might if I pull the trigger on a Japanese 3DS when the 2.0 launches. Supposedly there's some interconnectivity between the 3DS and U versions, and I'm worried about the region lock screwing that up.

I would just assume that in the event there is any interconnectivity, it's done on a NNID basis and won't work between Japanese 3DS and NA Wii U (you cannot load an out of region NNID on an in-region Wii U).

When asked to comment on Amazon’s $1 billion deal to buy videogame streaming site Twitch, ESPN President John Skipper didn’t mince words when it came to offering his appraisal of the form of entertainment dubbed “eSports.”

“It’s not a sport — it’s a competition. Chess is a competition. Checkers is a competition,” said Skipper in remarks Thursday at the Code/Media Series: New York conference. “Mostly, I’m interested in doing real sports.”

great interview X! I'll add you to the ever growing list of jacky players who hate guard breaks :D

personally I love them, and from a defensive perspective you have unique options to beat them that don't work against throws. like you can duck them on the first frame, unlike throws because the 3(?) frames it takes to crouch are throwable. you can also evade GBs unlike throws.

having different options to beat different defense options keeps the matches fast and scary. fuzzy guard beats mid/throw mixups but loses to guard breaks... and low throws :)

Figured I'd give ya'll an Art of Fighting update if that's okay. Today I'll show off some of the badass art submissions we got. All of these are pieces are originals for our show and it's just a fraction of what we have as well. Most artists sent prints too so there will be cheaper ways to acquire much art!

All art that we have at the show will of course be purchasable and the proceeds will go 100% to our charities (March of Dimes & Save Babies Through Screening). So if you're nearby New Mexico come by Sept 26-28. For those that can't make it to the show, we're gonna try and get a camera on this stuff to show it off on stream.

He's not wrong, I don't see why people get all worked up over whether e-sports is accepted by other sports entities. Just enjoy it for what it is.
It really doesn't matter. We don't need esports to be considered a sport in order for it to be legitimatize.

Mainly because of Poker.

I don't get bent out of shape about people not considering gaming a sport , though I do get curious about why Poker has been generally accepted by the general public considering how much of Poker is in the metagame. It's a similar concept.

Oh Smash is releasing this week in Japan? Blegh, don't have a JP 3DS.

Thankfully I have one and I'll be picking it up.

From the impressions I've been reading from the demo, it looks like the game has been designed with a lot more care regarding uniqueness than Brawl was.

Which can only mean, the imbalance is going to be disastrous, like any new fighting game released ever.

It's on ESPN because ESPN is the Entertainment & Sports Programming Network.

What makes a good fighting game good? Can it just feel good to play without a lot of depth? Dies there need to be the right amount of characters? Etc.

Too many components for a direct answer, but at the very least the movement should feel good and character variety should be utilized to its highest potential.

If you think about it playing marvel 3 really is like playing chess.

Any game with a strategic element is like playing chess.

Oops I totally mean guard break like the guard bars in Alpha 3, CvS2, KoF, SCV etc. Not guard breaking specific attacks. Those are fine. I would've liked those sped up in SCV and more advantage when they crush guards instead of a guard bar.

It's fun, good variety of play styles represented, at least half the cast being viable to win at high level, characters/system mechanics designed with each other in mind, Balanced damage/vitality/speed and risk vs reward on characters and moves and I could go on and on

*great art*
The Aulbath and Blanka pieces are awesome. I wouldn't mind getting a print of the Blanka one to hang up. The Baiken one is pretty nice too.

It's on ESPN because ESPN is the Entertainment & Sports Programming Network.

Yeah, which is what make's Skipper's comments so curious. I mean, it's not like they're going to stop airing WSOP, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have have The International on TV next year also.

I might not have been clear in my post, What I found curious was that despite Poker not being a sport either, it seems to have more acceptance among the sport-watching public than competitive gaming.

and yeah, I'm sure the answer is money.

I think it's more that someone figured out a way to sell a package built around the personalities. Poker being somewhat easier to understand than some of the most popularly streamed video games plays a part too, but if someone had figured out a way to essentially sell ESPN a cast of 10-15 pro players each easily slotted into competitive character types, ESPN might bite on a gaming series.

So you have a game that's been around a really long time (poker) combined with a hint of reality-show flavor. So far there's not much of an equivalent in pro gaming. Once there is, you still need someone slick enough to figure out how to package that so television executives will think they need it on their schedule.

is it fun?

The only thing that really matters when playing games

Poker is something that most people are familiar with on some kind of level, way more than video games. The difference is likely in time they've been around. Video games are relatively new compared to poker, so there's still some people that see them as a weird or foreign thing.

As the people that grew up without video games die off, this becomes less of a problem. It's definitely not something to worry about in the long run.
