Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age |OT| You Had One Job!

Ok after the 3rd and final time, I now have my final set up for going into the game:

-Vaan , bushi/knight, hashmal/ Mates
-Balthier, white mage/shikari, adrammelech/Zalera/Shemhazai
-Basch, Archer/Uhlan, Cu Chulainn/Ultima
-Ashe, Black Mage/Monk, Exodus/Famfrit
-Fran, Foebreaker/Machinist, Belias/Zodiark
-Penelo, Red Battlemage/Time Battlemage, Zeromus/Chaos.

So what do you all think? Is it good? Any suggestions?

How did they fix the Zodiac Spear in the remaster?

Any other special weapons I should know about to look for in the game? Never played the original.

What is the Shikari Job? Is there a Ninja type job? Is there a good guide for the different jobs yet?

The lag is real, at least in the menus it's noticeable.
And God how did I miss this games dialogue porn. Great to have you back, Final Fantasy.

I ordered the standard edition of this game back in November, when it was mispriced on Amazon for $39.99. Then, I pre-ordered the Steelbook when it was announced. Apparently I forgot to cancel my standard edition order, cause I just got two copies of the game. Thing is, they sent me two steelbook editions. So I get to return the full priced one and get it for $39.99. Score.

Yup, the menu lag is a little annoying. I can deal with it, but still, I wish they could improve it.

Well, I remembered that axes' damages were a bit random... Didn't remember them to be that random. 8 damage, really Fran?

Axes scale off Vit too, which Fran coincidentally has the least of by a decent margin.

The early progression is unparalelled in any game, imo. That feeling when you get access to cure for the first time is fantastic.

That affirmation is false: in the IZJS and Zodiac Age version, Fran's stats got a bit revamped, and she now has the best vitality score.

The one with the least Vitality is Basch (in all versions).

Oh! Thanks for the correction. Always glad to learn.

I would perhaps swap foebreaker and time mage with each other. That way both characters get a lot more HP lores. Red Mage/Machinist is also a cool novelty combo that can effectively use measures giving it absurd evasion. The Chaos esper could go to Ashe for a strong Holy spell.

Yeah, I ordered the standard edition on Amazon at that price when it was first announced. Apparently they switched me over to the steel book too. Not gonna complain about that.

It's been a few years since my last playthrough of IZJS so I didn't remember all the maps that well. So I'm wandering in the westernsands and end up in Zertinan Caverns where everything is suddenly double leveled compared to me. That creepy cave theme song that starts playing there basically tells you that you just fucked up by coming here.

Then those fucking slimes appeared. I actually killed two enemies there but then ran out of MP. I was just spamming Dark. Had to bail out.

Keeping Protect and Shell up for everyone is so much more expensive MP-wise currently than just casting Cura twice as often. Maybe I should stick to casting Protect and Shell only on the character that's most likely taking all the heat, so Vaan usually.

Yeah, it's pretty high up there when it comes to JRPGs. Going from Cure to Cura was a legitimate fucking game changer.

4x speed is ridiculous

It is, but also incredibly useful when you get used to controlling your characters at that speed.

The camera still sucks, though. Really wish you could zoom out, like a LOT.

Picked Archer for Fran but now she can cast Cure and Fire for...some reason? Can someone tell me whats goong on there?

Each character has innate abilities. Fran, Ashe and Penelo get some early spells.

Shell isn't really needed for most fights. Just use it against harder bosses/hunts that use debuffs.

Remember that, indeed, your allies have innate abilities:
  • Vaan: Daggers 1, Light Armor 1, Steal
  • Penelo: Daggers 1, Light Armor 1, White Magick 1
  • Balthier: Guns 1, Light Armor 1, Steal, First Aid
  • Fran: Bows 1, Mystic Armor 1, Steal, White Magick 1, Black Magic 1
  • Basch: Swords 1, Heavy Armor 1, Libra, First Aid
  • Ashe: Swords 1, Heavy Armor 1, Libra, White Magic 1

So, no matter your job choices, you will always have 3 characters able to use Steal (Vaan, Balthier, Fran). The rest is purely a bonus for early game.
Among the jobs, I believe only Archer and Hunter can learn Steal naturally. Red Battlemage can too IIRC, but you need to spend an Esper to reach that ability of the License Board.

Just got my steelbook! Woooo! Man, not gonna lie, part of me doesn't even want to open it. 2 hours before work is done. Let's go time.

Oh shit, so some of the Quickening licenses actually have a counterpart on the second board, too. Cool, got the "bridge" to a Battle Lore and the Yagyu Darkblade licenses with the same Quickening.

I wasn't gonna do this initially.. But I don't think I can stop myself from grinding some LP. A lot of LP. The Trials are such a good way to grind it.

At first I wasn't happy with the lack of monster portraits in bestiary but I remember one of my complaints from original was lack of model viewer. Wish I could zoom in (ps4's home button zoom does the trick though).

God, just finished the intro and I forgot how...completely different this is from every other mainline Final Fantasy game, released both before and afterwards. Never finished it back when it came out. Definitely going to do so now, I feel like I'll appreciate it more. Beautiful steelbook, too.

*Sees airship*

God...I wish Skies of Arcadia would get a remaster like this...

I would love is Skies got a well done remaster. I just would like them to fix the random battle system. There were too many for my taste.

I can't wait to play this. This has been a very good year to be a gamer.

Think of me when you make it into that forest with a two-way branch(I think) of how to proceed with enemies. Where my team died and my XII journey came to an end all those years ago.

well I'll be damned!! my package arrived!!!

Currently playing through Final Fantasy VI for the first time and am really enjoying it. I tried XII years ago (original PS2) and only got like two hours into it. I think I reached the camp. It did not interest me at all.

As someone who really enjoys older FF, is this one worth picking up? I'm not sure I want to spend $60...lol. The combat seems kind of...slow?

Regarding that: did they really removed the portraits, or are the old PS2 FFXII players mistaken?
If true, I'm disappointed, and I wish they would add them back through patching (well, assuming it is possible; someone suggested that it probably was a resolution problem, yes?).

In France, you can find the game at 49,99€ (and quite possibly at a lower price through promotions and coupons).
As for the combat, you can freely change the battle speed in the options menu, and choose between Active or Wait mode (wait mode pauses the game while you select actions). Not to mention the possibility to set the whole game's speed instantly to 2x or 4x simply by pressing L1 (ideal while travelling).

Do note that FFXII's beginning is a little slow (to my tastes, anyway). It gets better once you are a little further in.

Alright, think I've got my party plan finally. Aiming for good/somewhat lore friendly.

Vaan: Shikari/Foebreaker
Balthier: Machinist/White Mage
Fran: Archer/Red Mage
Basch: Bushi/Uhlan
Ashe: Knight/Time Mage
Penelo: Monk/Black Mage

Is the order you pick them in important to starting? I picked Shikari for Vaan to start, and I just got Penelo. Thinking Black Mage might be more useful in the short run for magic over monk?

The class choices are giving me anxiety. :/

Been debating back and forth for literally 3 hours and haven't made any progress.

Crippling.

Same here, I haven't even started, no idea what to do. I know there isn't really a "wrong" choice, but I'd like to have a few (at least) optimised characters.

Well if it helps, the anxiety will just get worse when you've finally actually made the choices.

I just unlocked the second jobs and now I'm questioning myself like no tomorrow lol. I'm just gonna live with my choices, though, no takebacks.

Did you guys check out the guide at the bottom of the OP? Might help u decide.

From OP:

These two Gfaq Threads were very useful to me when I was theory crafting by teams (first one is optimized, and second one is lore friendly):

https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/1912...c-age/75477310
https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/1912...c-age/75403072

The first thread is really nice, and covers how to take advantage of the best spells in the game (Holy with Black mage staff, Ardor & Burning Bow, Ninja Blade / Katanas with genji gloves)
