Sucks for Squeenix and Uematsu that an unfinished version of the soundtrack leaked. Sounds promising, though.

Have all the classes been revealed yet?

This will be my first MMO. Is the combat always slow or is it just the server lag affecting the GT videos?

Whatever class this is (hopefully a Corsair equivalent), I'm in.

Welcome to Final Fantasy XIV's Beta
Square Enix shares first images from the updated version. Plus, take a tour around Limsa Lominsa.

A few lucky gamers have been taking part in an alpha test for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIV these past few weeks. The game they've been playing looks a little something like this:

At some point in the hopefully not-so-distant future, Square Enix will be taking the game from alpha to closed beta. This is what that same scene will look like then:

FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka has, in previous interviews, promised some visual updates from the alpha version. This is apparently what he was talking about.

Square Enix updated the Japanese press today with first screenshots from the beta build. Included in the batch of shots was a map of the world of Eorza.

You'll also find lots of new screens from around the city of Limsa Lominsa in our media gallery. This is the sole city that alpha players have access to, although based off the above screen comparison, their experience doesn't look quite so nice

mhh I was kinda close, no? :lol
just switch Gridania and Ishgard, that was a complete guess anyway. They have Limsa Lominsa wrong though, it was supposed to be in the north :p
(btw it's the first result for "FFXIV map" in GIS :lol suck it SE, you have to change YOURS now)

from the other screens I like the better/moodier lighting in the beta version

Mmm, vague Africa shape with a little Madagascar island to boot, and isn't it part of the backstory that the land the game takes place in is some kind of historical wild-land or something?

Famitsu has an interview with team Final Fantasy XIV this week. Here's a summary of the bullet points that were listed at Game Jouhou:

* The Beta version will see some system changes that will make it so that you can more easily string together your attacks.
* The alpha test had bad tempo with insufficient explanations. They've made some revisions to the beta, resulting in a completely different system.
* It will be easier to save up Gil.
* You remember that amazing comparison shot showing how much better the beta looks compared to the alpha? It seems that the beta uses a different technique for its shadows. The alpha version used something called "Project Shadows" while the beta version uses "Depth Buffer Shadows."
* The city of Limsa Lominsa will have two levels.
* There will be a robust log filter in place. This is something that wasn't finished in time for the alpha.
* They're readying something large scale for your home, which functions like FFXI's Mog House.
* They'll soon be adding alpha testers as part of the new "alpha 2" phase. They've already selected the participants via drawing!
* As you play the game, you'll be able to freely change the god that you select during character making.
* Vehicles for FFXIV include Chocobo, horse driven carriage, boat, and air ship.
* You'll be able to select different colors for your equipment.

Wonder if that means there won't be a lot of ANY equipment color swaps.FFXI had a good amount of those.

:O :O :O

I would guess they mean an airship system like in FFXI ;)

(or the one-person-flying things from the CGI intro are actually playable)

Looks like a new wave of invites are going out. Just received a beta invite in my email for the Japanese version telling me to download the client.

But... it's for Windows only. Says the PS3 test will come later. I can't be assed to bother.

I have high hopes for this game. I want to see SoD reborn better than ever in the game. I want it to be so good, I won't need to look at console games for 5+ years. :lol

I got in, but get errors when I try to join the tester site:

"You could not log in because the service account in question is not registered.
If you would like to log in to the service, please log in to the Square Enix Account Management System and register the service account."

I assume that's simply because the site doesn't go live until the 2nd? I don't see any mention of the beta under Services on the S-E Account page yet either.

Heeeeey, if you don't want that "windows only" client, hook a GAFer up, please! :D
