Former Bungie VP challenge Lord Kotick with an open letter

MechDX said:
Does GAF just hate everything? I swear whenever a Kotick thread is created they call for his head. Now a guy formerly from a VERY GAF repsected developer,Bungie, calls him out they hate on him as well.

WTF?:lol
It's like there are thousands of different people here all with their own opinions on things.

I think what Kotick meant was "Bungie is the last one of the companies we can work with that will make us a shitload of money."

He's obviously expecting a cross platform franchise able to hit the same levels of popularity as COD, and he probably is not wrong. But he's still an asshole.

Because it read more like a breach promotion than a call out...

I don't understand the purpose of sending this letter for other than a marketing ploy.

Ding ding ding.

Like he said, Atomic Games doesn't have the marketing budget Activision does; they need to find other ways to build buzz. :lol

But the comment was silly, especially since he could only name three shooters as being examples of innovation (even if Portal surely should count).

Well, he's speaking as a shooter developer in the context of discussing another shooter developer, and I think it's entirely fair to suggest that a) shooters need new blood and innovation just as much as any other genre and b) Gears and Borderlands are two of the more promiment shooters from this generation that were both innovative and successful.

Their next game is called "Breach"?

The name came about after Six Days in Fallujah got shitcanned.

The shame here is here the guy is correct but he delivered his statement as a PR stunt. If somebody from one of the companies he had mentioned said something about this, the thread would be quite different.

I would actually love if companies started selling the multiplayer partion of gams on XBLA/PSN for half price or a retail game.

When did he leave Bungie to be at Atomic?

I bet Bobby gives in, can't argue that selling COD's online by itself is truly a way to prove its innovation. Starring in Breach would just be the icing on the cake.

Y'see, GAF is made up of many different people, and a large percentage of them have their own thoughts and opinions.

This reality seems to be a mystery to some posters, the kind who run in here to call out "GAF" on something or other.

Nice marketing attempt.

And not that I disagree with his general point, but in what way is their new online game Breach innovative?

well, the guy is promoting his game, i mean, that's what he's supposed to be doing, right?

Kotick could release black ops multi for $59.99 and still sell millions.

On the one hand, Breach is awesome. On the other hand, this letter is pretty stupid, reads like it was written by a Gamefaq-er, and will never even cross Kotick's inbox.

So, yay?

One of these is by Atomic games. The other is by Activision.

:lol
Seriously Kotick doesn't care about innovation anyway. He doesn't even want fun. He hates video game so much that he wants to suck out all the money and soul from this industry, and move on to some other business he actually want to work for. Like porn.

It's only a matter of time before someone releases a game featuring a villain named Kobby Botick.

Think harder.
Is the insinuation that they named the game Breach only because it sounds like Reach? I find that pretty unlikely.

Because you can shoot a brick out of the wall? I don't know. It looks decent. I guess maybe because it's retail-quality downloadable game?

I wouldn't mind that, actually. I think $25-$30 would be a fair price and not just for Call of Duty, but any multiplayer focused title.

When that happens it will be $30.
Plus $10 a month.

Just like Xbox Live, right? $60 subscription plus a $60 game.

In response to your spoiler, when that does happen, I'll stop. I don't pay to play online for any game, period.

People who are saying Gears, Portal, or Borderlands are not innovative need to start giving some examples. Gears is as similar to Kill Switch as Portal is to Prey, which is to say not all that similar, but they share some ideas and actually made great games using those ideas unlike their predecessors. As for Borderlands, sure it is inspired by a ton of other games but never have so many different ideas and genres been put together in a successful way that is at all similar to Borderlands. Gears less so now, but just because they have the most copycats of the three games mentioned.

Good to know. I'll keep it in mind.

This is just a marketing ploy. Dude's taking advantage of all the Kotick hate. good for him, I guess.

I don't understand why he thought this was a good challenge. If SOCOM Confrontation can sell at $60, they could sell Black Ops with 6 maps and day 1 $20 DLC and people would buy it and the downloads in droves.
