I'm liking the discussion in this thread, and I can identify myself with many of the statements made in here.

I've been an anthro fan for a long time. There was a large period when I feared the consequences of admitting to this, but I think this is becoming gradually less of a problem, both because of changes in my own mindset, and of a perceived shift in the way the Internet hive-mind deals with this particular preference. I hope I am right in believing this.

I wonder if people are familiar with the popular kemono dating sim Morenatsu.

Kaijima: Kemono is animal.

To further, in Japan - anthro art and by extension its fans are called kemono. However, it is because it is a shortened for "kemono-obito" or beastman. It's mostly male focused as the females tend to sway towards kemonomimi (the ears/tails only type of people), though it's not uncommon to see female kemono and male kemonomimi.

you're allowed to have bad taste. :3

Well yeah, we're allowed to have kemonomimi around here even if it's bad taste.

You also have stuff like mermaids and demons though. Mermaids are based on fish and the top half may or may not be 100% normal. Demons are frequently depicted with various animal imagery, like horns, bat wings, and such. Vampires are to a lesser extent because even though they do employ primarily bat imagery it's usually just fangs.
Possibly, whoever imagined merfolk may have not been thinking that this person/being/whatever is a human mixed with a fish, but that they are a creature in human form, with a proclivity towards temptation, that needs a tail for movement through water, like other known sea creatures, and the fish tail was the easiest addition to come up with. Even in the uncommon case, the gills may have been seen as more necessary, so give'em a fish head. Over time, merfolk just become familiar, and easily convertible to human (I don't really see much of the reverse nowadays, except for maybe comedy).

Edit: Looking on this, it may be forced in some sense, as I'm not aware of the origins of the mermaid. But if the reasoning is possible, then others may think of it in the same way, and rationalize them similarly.

In the biblical sense, demons may be counted in most cases as fallen angels, and thus would have a human base to start with, with the fangs/horns and whatnot being physical identifiers of their corruption. Outside of that, demons in other cultures...I guess it would depend on what is considered a demon and what their origins are, since other cultures have different connotations of what a demon is/does, like the Japanese.

Vampires...I think their connection with animals is just an extension of their power, being able to transform into any 'creature of the night'. They aren't really considered bats though (I may be wrong).

E#2: Maybe the reason could just be a combination of time (the establishment of the term), and the Internet's memeification of furry behavior, that would contribute to the dissonance required to accept one thing and reject another.

So, do you guys prefer your anthros palmigrade or digitigrade?

I'm slightly partial towards digitigrade (if it is done in such a way as to not compromise a credible bipedal stance, in terms of balance), but I can totally dig palmigrade anthros too. :)

I think digitigrade is best for horses since they only have a single toe

In others it looks like they could topple over too easily.

I really find it depends on the artist and the subject in question. That said, I think I prefer palmigrade anthros myself. It is like you and DonMigs have said, the balance issue with digitigrade anthros can be a bit tricky.

Why did you edit out "unicorn"?

Cause it's not just that one (we were on the subject of horses) I don't want to single it out but all his characters seem well drawn but all very....uh......yeah just..a mess.

You should post some of his art.

Maybe not horse anthro though >_>

Mmm...no I can't. I posted one of his art (and probably his only clean one). You can look up the rest I guess.

Yo!
To further discussion, I stumbled upon this on DA:

I dunno if there's actual official categories, but which ones do you enjoy? I will make a spectrum up:

1) Caricature animal (includes Bugs and Mickey Mouse and Tweety, etc. They have cartoon proportions. -- The one you mainly see on kids' cartoons)
2) Proportional animal (ferals, they pretty much look like the species)
3) Bipedal ferals (they look like the anmal, but they are on two legs somehow. Paws still very paw-like)
4) Bipedal (haunches/legs, joints, hands, and posture more human)
5) Proportionally Human (human proportions but head close to the species, probably have chest like a human, looks naked without clothes)
6) Humanoid (not seen here. Looks almost human but maybe some hint of animal characteristics like shortened muzzle, ears, tail, markings)
7) Human with hints of other species (not seen here. Totally looks like a human, but just in costume parts and body paint. Facial structure pretty much human -- The one Uchip likes most lol)

I personally like 1, 2, and 5. 7 occasionally if done right.

That girl in the bunny hat
I'd consider Bugs Bunny way more of a 4 than a 1 o_o

But I guess 4-5 myself, that seems to be the range where it's most overtly fantasy.

Well, Bugs is just so cartoony, it's like he doesn't count! Noodle legs, gloved hnds, funny puffy cheeks. They so cartoony, he's hardly a rabbit at all~!

6 is already off the chart!
Okay, I will add in a 7 just for you. XD

Yeah, the text list I made based on the picture I found. I just edited my post. >_>
This makes me want to make a continuum myself! What a great idea for a drawing.. haha

that would be interesting
I haven't seen a full one done right

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Surely fursuit falls between 5 and skinpaint.

That's somewhere between crappy fur-con fursuits and 6 I imagine.

he meant 'don' in stead of 'done'. Meaning he'd put on a suit (scaley? really?) if it would help him get some snuggle time with the cute mousey girl. (Bridget I mean. I can't look at Minerva without being reminded of someone doing the 'duck lips' face.)

Well I can't see myself in a fur suit but if it'd mean better chances then yes i'd wear the fur then. Oh Bridget :3
I actually understood this even less :(

That's fine, I just patted the head of your avatar. There there Uchip

If I really cared what people think my life would have taken a much different direction than it has.

I'd probably be successful. Instead of an out of work 3D modeler that spends almost all of his time taking care of his close to paralyzed mother. I'm not making the big monies, but my conscience is clear.

If people want to judge a single part of who I am instead of the entire person, then that's their issue, not mine.

Now, lets appreciate animal/people together my "off" friends. Besides one of my friends has a huge interest in vampire porn. Which is kind of hot too.

Hmmm, maybe I was right with that whole pervert thing earlier.

Ah well. Maybe the universe will get me right next time. Honestly a part of me thinks I should have been born a woman, but I don't really care about changing that now. At this point I'd be a really ugly woman. Instead of a moderately attractive man.

Well... now you guys know more about me than some of my closest real life friends.
