I don't want to single anyone out, but the forum is only as good as we make it. If all we're doing is replying with two or three words that serve to mock rather than contributing to the discussion at hand in a meaningful way then we become the reason the forum isn't as valuable as we'd like it to be.
I agree that GAF is somewhat more civil now than it was before just by virtue of there being fewer people around, it's the upside to an unfortunate situation. A large forum with tens of thousands of active members becomes difficult to moderate with any sort of consistency, especially when its focused on video games which generally tends to attract a younger crowd and with politics grabbing so much attention since late 2015.
There is no meaningful discussion to be had with alt-right scumbags.

Honestly I think the problem is that people are very stuck in their ways on a message board, while in real life the experiences are more potent. But also, there's pride involved.
So if your position is downplaying racism, bigotry, and sexism, etc. And due to your bias you will try to swindle your argument around your views. In particular, people massage their arguments around their views regardless of fact or even decency, but plain shitty views don't have a place.
The mocking comes because we know this to be true.

Dunno about more civil but it certainly feels like you can now post something without having to worry about inadvertently setting off some of the professional offense merchants that used to camp out here and were looked after by certain admins who were out on a recruitment drive.

There may be batshit peeps on both sides but most of the human race doesnt reside there, so hopefully the forum can reflect this going forwards.
Me personally, Ive nearly got the Bloodborne Platinum, and for all the shit Ive given trophy collectors in the past, Ive actually quite enjoyed myself getting the damn things with this game. God help me.

... Sure, the simple act of bringing up a touchy and controversial subject may or may not on its own be deemed "uncivil." Of course, civility depends on what other people in the conversation do with the conversation next, in which one should probably not expect the conversation to go civilly because... well, it's a touchy and controversial subject for a reason.
But then again, this just happened, and surprise, the conversation didn't go too well.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with disagreeing or even arguing IMO. The problem starts when only one opinion is allowed and all others must be removed out of some illogical fear that those who "think correctly" may be swayed to the "wrong side." Those with that fear should have more confidence in their viewpoint or should appropriately start to question it internally.
What a great example you set for "civil discussion." How can you claim it's someone else's fault that the discussion isn't civil when you go at it like this?

I have seen this shit happening a lot more than before but the upside is it gets ignored. Before if someone said something off color then the fuckin virtue signalling was all over the place. People would quote it again and again and tag it with "bye bitch" or some other shit. As if seeking approval of the mods like a dog wants your approval for bringing in a dead bird. Now you see this and people just move on.
I think it is a better place than before but not having a ton of time to keep up with the pages changing I can post or follow a post easier. Really important things get posted and not near as much fluff dogshit around here. A lot less posts like "what's your fav controller from the 90s?" it feels distilled but the better topics are sticking around. Plus considering why a lot of people left is fine with me.
The news about this place got out and so many people knee jerk left and never got both sides of the story. So many people lashed out against the site and us remaining people by posting all kinds of horse shit making this a rough place to visit at work or around kids. Why fuckin do that to a community you care about because the owner did something you don't agree with. Why fuckin post porn just to get a ban? To me it speaks volumes about the shitbags that left for whatever other place they want to go virtue signal at and claim a hard ban on this place as a badge of pride.
