Gran Turismo 6 Review Thread

At last, the moon shines over the castle. Gran Turismo 6 is out and reviews are coming in. Embargo breaks at 2 AM CST, although there are already reviews out.

Overall Score: 80.3% (out of thirty-two reviews)

Ultimately, a game, not matter how good, is still just a game. It simply can't replicate the sensations of driving a real car, and is thus no direct replacement for the thrill of real-life racing. However, for the time being it’s about as close as you can get and for a fraction of the cost of doing just one track day. We love it.

Polygon - 9/10

Most of those details are perfect, though, and they weave together into a wonderful demonstration of what racing games can achieve. Polyphony Digital's love for cars has always been clear, but it's always felt a little cold and mechanical. The benefits of that technical expertise still exist in Gran Turismo 6, but they're put to much more enthusiastic use. The result is a massive, passionate game and a fitting final lap for the PlayStation 3.

PSNation - 9/10
http://www.psnation.org/2013/12/06/review-gran-turismo-6-ps3/
Gran Turismo 6 took a very good game and made it great. I know that everyone wished this was on PS4 right away, but I have no problem with it coming to PS3, as they have been able to take advantage of a very mature system with 81+ million PS3 owners that I hope compete with online. There’s no way that I would still be playing the game if I didn’t truly enjoy it, and it’s all I’ve done when I’ve had any free-time. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a huge upgrade from GT5, and many of the changes have improved the experience greatly.

*Please Note, this score is subject to change after the Day 1 Patch and Online Play are available

gamesradar - 4.5/5

Gran Turismo 6 rights almost all of the wrongs of its predecessor to deliver one of the most expansive, beautiful and enjoyable racing simulations ever seen. If only the AI and damage modelling were better, this would be the perfect racing game.

US/Gamer - 4.5/5

Gran Turismo 6 is an over-ambitious, huge, sprawling, messy masterpiece. It has its highs and lows. It has its perfections and its flaws. Sometimes it’s annoying. Sometimes it’s infuriating. But most of the time it’s simply the best driving game you can buy.

Eurogamer - 9/10
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-06-gran-turismo-6-review
And so, 15 years since its inception, Gran Turismo carries on its pursuit much as it always has, delivering a driving simulator that's as exhausting as it is exhaustive, as infuriating as it is intoxicating. As a foundation, it's certainly more stable than its predecessor - and as a way to explore the thrill of four wheels it is, despite its many faults, exceptional, brilliant and pretty much peerless. It's not finished yet, but Polyphony likely never will be - but in Gran Turismo 6 it's just delivered the broadest, most complete iteration of its epic vision.

Machinima - 9/10

Truth is, it’s all of it. The ludicrous stock of included vehicles, the surprisingly diverse collection of career mode events, the fact that you can tweak the F-stop of your camera in the game’s photo mode… there’s no end to the minutiae of automotive celebration crammed onto this disc. While some small flaws and occasionally dated features edge it closer to deposition, Gran Turismo is still the king of racing.

Gaming Trend - 90
http://gamingtrend.com/reviews/technicality-wrecknacality-gran-turismo-6/
Gran Turismo 6 is a beautiful racing simulator that values the art and science of the race over the drama and theatrics that often make racing so appealing. While the game lacks in certain areas, namely in their complete lack of real collision dynamics, the overall racing experience is one of sublime enjoyment. The depth of customization and available vehicles make for a seemingly infinite experience. With Polyphony’s dedication to the game through updates, Gran Turismo 6 should continue to stay fresh long after you’ve bought and played it. Even without the fun and crazy gimmicks of other racing games, Gran Turismo 6 provides the most authentic racing experience.

Gran Turismo 6 is a huge game to say the least, intended among other things to grow and evolve thanks to the many DLC (free or not) and the various patches that Polyphony Digital plans to release, just like that of day one. Title passion oozes from every angle and can be considered as the most complete virtual encyclopedia of motoring ever made, a true tribute to the world of four wheels . The cars and the tracks will keep you busy for hours and hours, the career is extremely enjoyable, while ensuring progression and variety without being "strict" and finally redesigned interface with knowledge of the facts. Among other things, the corrections made to the gameplay are felt, and elements such as the changing weather conditions, the physical remodeled on the suspension and tires, and the model improved driving Gran Turismo 6 in fact make a game enjoyable and realistic, although not simulative , from this point of view. Let me be clear, even this chapter is able to satisfy those who wanted a strong updating two elements that goes back several years: the collision system is not yet satisfactory and artificial intelligence is "driven" in the behavior of the opponents, far from being realistic. That said, Gran Turismo 6 is the title ideal for motoring enthusiasts to three hundred and sixty degrees, those who equate the guide, the outline and the machines themselves.

Gran Turismo 6 isn't perfect, but it's still the best videogame out there for driving enthusiasts. It's what Gran Turismo 5 should have been. It needs work in the AI and damage modeling departments, and that next-gen visual upgrade can't come soon enough. Still, GT6 is a game that I expect I'll happily play for years to come, or at least until Polyphony Digital brings the next one out. Its charms run so deep that I’m just as happy chugging around the track at 86 MPH in a family van as I would be in the most expensive exotic racer.

The Board, therefore, is only one: make yourself behind the wheel and enjoy the ride.

It should put a lid on some things endemic and get over it, at least until the coming of GT7 . The "appoggini" are still there, as well as the damages are more so to speak. Likewise, the AI is at times condescending and too far from the stimuli being made from Forza Motorsport 5 with the excellent system Drivatar (albeit on a different console generation, it should be noted). That said, the revamp of the physics engine represents a clear step forward and allows you to "feel" the cars like never before in the series or, more generally, in the light-sim. The huge amount of cars and available scenarios, then, gives good variety and a lot of longevity. All this, waiting to see how it will behave the game in multiplayer, when it will be populated by more people than some meager journalist. Let's say that GT6 is what would have to be GT5 outset. And let's say that, honestly, it's hard to ask for more in a console with seven years behind him.

Gran Turismo 6 improvement seen in its predecessor, but has yet to go up a gear to keep up the major proposals of the genre. The proposal is generally achieved really well, but there are some things still missing, and commitment of Polyphony Digital to waive some of the advances that the genre has experienced in recent years can be frustrating for some. But finally the big numbers in terms of cars and tracks are accompanied by a sound and realistic driving. A big step forward to retrieve the old franchise excellence nonnegotiable.

IGN - 8.0/10

Gran Turismo 6’s problems are baggage the series has been carrying since 1997; the second you thunk into a wall at 200 kilometres per hour and drive off scot-free, or hop into a belching V8 that sounds more like a wheezing milkshake maker, the glass shatters and the illusion breaks with it. But when you’re on one of Gran Turismo 6’s absolutely gorgeous tracks, fused with the car you’re controlling, attacking apexes with confidence and devouring sectors with steely precision, it’s not hard to see why this series is deservedly regarded as one of the best of its kind, and this one is no exception.

TheEscapist - 4/5

Bottom Line: More of a driving sim and less of a racing game, Gran Turismo 6 is the cream of the crop. It's an easy game to hop into for a single race or plant yourself in front of for hours on end. They've added some interesting features but at its heart it hasn't changed much from the last release.

Meanwhile Gran Turismo 6 is a great episode for the millions of fans of the franchise, but it can not be the best racing game simulation of the current-gen.

Hardcore Gamer Magazine - 4/5
http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2013/12/06/review-gran-turismo-6/64753/
For fans of racing simulators, Gran Turismo 6 is as good as ever and arguably remains the gold standard of the genre. There’s over a thousand cars, thirty-seven tracks and tons of events. All of that combined with deep tuning results in an experience with huge lasting appeal. Unfortunately, it’s too long in the tooth for its own good. Playing it after experiencing Forza Motorsport 5 makes it feel like, well, going back a console generation. The mechanics and features are as impressive as ever, but now that we’ve seen what cars can look like on the current generation of consoles, it’s hard going back. Still, it’s hard to fault the game for being released too late and it remains another thoughtful, expertly crafted racing experience. It will be an exciting day when we get to experience the series on PS4, but for now, Gran Turismo 6 is a a fine stopgap for fans of realistic racing.

Digital Spy - 8/10
http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/re...-review-ps3-a-real-greatest-hits-package.html
Polyphony's latest release feels like the game Gran Turismo 5 should have been, effectively streamlining the experience while adding new cars and courses.

It's not a huge leap forward, and is slightly overshadowed by the launch of next-gen systems, but there's enough content to keep petrolheads busy until the inevitable PS4 sequel.

The Guardian - 8/10
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/dec/06/gran-turismo-6-review
Granted, tinkering with these would mean re-engineering a philosophy so engrained in GT's tyre tread that Polyphony must fear a catastrophic puncture. Yet, accomplished as GT6 is, the team will need to revisit some fundamentals if future iterations are able to stand wheel arch to wheel arch with the Forzas of the world. Indeed, the prospect of how the developer may be willing to evolve the franchise for PS4 is a riveting one. But knowing Polyphony Digital, that's a few years down the road yet.

For now, at least, PS3 owners should focus on enjoying another excellent Gran Turismo outing

Game Informer - 8.0/10
http://www.gameinformer.com/games/g...2/06/gran-turismo-6-game-informer-review.aspx
It's fitting that GT 6 appears at the end of the PS3's arc. This 15-year anniversary is an unironic celebration of the yoke of its legacy, but it doesn't have to signal the end of the franchise itself. Thankfully, glimmers of Gran Turismo's racing spirit still live.

EGM Now - 7.5/10
http://www.egmnow.com/articles/reviews/egm-review-gran-turismo-6/
GT6 feels like a rushed effort, and many problems from GT5 remain unresolved. But the classic GT base remains intact, since the actual act of simulation driving remains very tight—and it’s coupled with a tremendous amount of choice when you consider the 1,200 cars that come on the disc.

SpazioGames - 7.5/10

The final version of the latest effort by Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed the lights and shadows that unfortunately many were expecting. The career is deep, varied, well structured and engaging. The dynamic weather system and day / night cycle adds further immersion and realism, while the improvements in terms of the physics of car handling and suspension are marking a step forward in the driving model. Unfortunately, the damage system just sketched, collisions ridiculous, artificial intelligence too tame and train the usual annoying effect severely undermine the gaming experience offered by Gran Turismo 6 , labeling it as yet another missed opportunity. It makes you wonder if this constant desire to add cars on cars is really needed, rather than being merely a pretext to improve the record of the previous chapter are drawn into a vicious cycle that does not actually lead anywhere. It should be allowed to focus on quality content and devote himself to solve the serious problems of gameplay now that afflict far too long a series that deserves to return to the glories of the past.

You had to if you wanted to buy the Lotus E21 F1 cars only with vouchers purchased car in Forza 5, lay just under 80 euros on the table, Polyphony Digital shows that it goes even bolder. Gran Turismo 6 is – much like its franchise brothers – the perfect Sunday game. It feels safe, but it is all the same as enjoyable as ever.

It’s the familiarity that provides the biggest criticism; though Gran Turismo 5 was, in many ways, the same as the games that came before it, enough time had passed that it felt relevant again.

GT6 doesn’t benefit from the same nostalgic effect; it hasn’t been all that long since we first took on the Sunday Cup.

It’s thoroughly enjoyable all the same and the new improvements here really are worthwhile, better even. But nothing about the game feels new, not really.

In Short: A useful improvement over the last game but one that still avoids instituting any of the serious changes that the series now desperately needs.

Pros: Still the best drive of any racing game, with track selection that puts Forza Motorsport 5 to shame. Excellent graphics for a PlayStation 3 game, and mountains of content.

Cons: Artificial intelligence and sound design remains very weak. Lack of proper damage modelling seems increasingly bizarre. Car list is vast but not particularly well chosen.
LevelUp - 7.0/10

Google Translation:
Gran Turismo 6 is a good deal, but could have been only one downloadable content to undertake the changes and new features will add to Gran Turismo 5 instead of selling it as a whole new game. We could say that is the same as its predecessor with a pair of new, more cars and more tracks, but nothing exceptional. Hopefully soon we will have news of a new release for the PlayStation 4, because Gran Turismo 6 already looks old.

Venture Beat - 65
http://venturebeat.com/2013/12/06/gran-turismo-6-review/
Gran Turismo 6 is not a game for the uninitiated. It’s made for racing fans by racing fans. It’s for people who know that front/rear weight distribution isn’t a euphemism for holiday weight gain and that the Gap doesn’t refer to a mall clothing store. As a nonracing fan, there’s a lot about it I still don’t understand. What are performance points and why are they important? I have no idea what torque is. I have no idea what an exhaust manifold is or why it improves my car’s racing ability. Admittedly, some of this information is available in the game, but it’s densely packed into the user-interface and might prove intimidating to newcomers. I didn’t care enough to look for it. More importantly, Polyphonic did nothing to make me care. Outside of a few beginner driving lessons, it feels as if you’re supposed to know all of this stuff already, and that could alienate some of the new blood this aging franchise needs to stay relevant in the next console generation.

VideoGamer - 6/10
http://www.videogamer.com/reviews/gran_turismo_6_review.html
Gran Turismo 6 ends up feeling stubborn to adapt to modernity. Its myriad landscapes are barren and unexciting, while the music sounds like it’s been ripped straight from a Ron Jeremy compilation VHS. There’s an age old argument that simulation racing games are ‘just cars going around in circles’ – Gran Turismo 6 has no retort.

If it had been released a few months ago, the new Gran Turismo would have felt much more impressive. It features a great variety of races, more than 1,200 cars to zip around in (not even including the original concept cars that are coming as free DLC), and when everything clicks, it looks amazing. But playing it now, after the PS4 and Xbox One have launched, it feels like somewhat of a step back. Games like Need for Speed Rivals look and feel so good on the PS4, and when you're playing GT6, you can't help but feel like you're missing out on a better racing experience.

A PlayStation 4 version of Gran Turismo has already been promised for as early as next year, and it will likely alleviate many of these problems. In the meantime, GT6 feels like a pit stop on the way to the next generation.

With 1200 cars and 100 track layouts – with monthly updates not far around the corner – longevity is guaranteed. Subjectively GT6 does not exhibit a big leap over GT5, though, and it remains a focused game that never truly allows you to let your hair down and have a giggle. But with a reasonable wait likely before Gran Turismo hits the PS4 – a development of the GT6 platform rather than an all-new Gran Turismo 7 the safest bet – racing simulation fans will still appreciably lap this up and revel in its details.

What you're getting with GT6 is a great playing game that feels both new and old in the graphics department, and frustrating events that some hate and others deem challenging. Is it worth the money? Sure. Would I rather see Polyphony start over from scratch and give me 200 cars like Forza 5 and totally redo every single aspect? Hell. Yes.12P

Hopefully that's the plan when the series moves to PS4.

Plenty of games have had a day 1 patch. No reason they couldnt have provided it earlier to reviewers, since it probably went through testing and certification at least a few days in advance.
Maybe. Don't know the politics or logistics, but at 1.2 GB that's a hefty update.

Worst review ever >.>

My first time on the track was a disaster. I hit the wall three times. I spent more time off the track than on it. I even wound up driving the wrong way at one point. My lack of digital driving skills is without question. Yet, here I am reviewing Gran Turismo 6, Polyphony Digital’s latest entry in its long-running “Real Driving Simulator” franchise.
