What I'm finding interesting is how the Trevor character is either loved or hated, not only as a character, but also the way his story affects the game.

Adam Sessler's review spouts some hyperbole and more literary references.

I believe he compares the player playing GTA V to Gulliver. Ya. But I love The Sess. Good review.

3.5 out of 5 isn't that bad...

People need to stop using this logic 'cause it does not apply to every developer. Rockstar is the valedictorian of the gaming industry and this generation, and scores like this definitely don't look well on their transcript. A 3.5 out of 5 might be good for C average developers, but not Rockstar.

From Escapist Review:

"That's what it's like to play Grand Theft Auto V. The three men you take control of throughout the game aren't even anti-heroes. They're just scumbags. "

...This is actually making me more excited.

Rockstar must have been tired of all the ludonarrative dissonance criticism of GTA IV and designed GTA V accordingly. Can't please everyone.

Indeed. After all, it is Grand Theft Auto. This is what the series is supposed to be like and I am happy to see them pushing it in that direction harder than ever.

Yeah that sounds like a good thing to me.

Vice City, GTAIII all had proper scumbags as heroes.
GTAIV tried to do something different but fell flat on its face.

Even people watching streams agreed some missions took the brutal violence past enjoyable into just unpleasant. It's likely not a good fit for a story of satire. You'll look defensive trying to ridicule reviewers taking the creators seriously enough to challenge them on that.

It'd be interesting to see how people would react to GTA:VC's story these days, since Tommy was the original unapologetic heel of the series who is no better than the crooks he kills, and has absolutely no problem with that.

His reviews can be hyperbolic to say the least. I like the guy and love listening to him, and he's incredibly intelligent, but I've pretty much had to stop watching his and IGN's reviews because... yeah, they hype shit to the moon. I think it's great that he can feel so much love for certain games and there's nothing wrong with it, but at the same time they're just not for me as I'm really gullible and get excited easily, but usually end up being somewhat disappointed-- especially with The Last of Us and Halo 4, two games I didn't find to be particularly great.

Well, I love Kane & Lynch for a reason.

I didn't even have to read his review to know something like that was coming.

Why he's so loved around here I'll never know. I'm surprised I'm able to actually read his reviews because my eyes are always rolling during them.

I must be missing something... based on those screens the only thing I notice are the low textures in some roofs of the 360 version. Aside from that, all the same.

Why does the headline says 360 version is best? What am I missing?

Compare the palm trees in some shots, the 360 has a slight edge in vegetation details at some distances.

It actually sounds like the non-10 reviewers have solid reasons for not giving it a perfect score.

Nothing I am reading so far is just so beyond the reality of the fact that it makes you shake your head.

Even that 3.5 review. Just sounds like the reviewer absolutely hated the characters. Havent read the review myself so does the reviewer even talk about the gameplay?

To be honest, I'm excited to see how they've pulled it off. Thinking about it, it felt very odd to be sympathetic and relate to the protagonists of GTA prior, when they were hired killers and routinely carried out horrific actions for little more than personal gain.

Maybe we won't relate to the characters as much, but I'm not sure that's an inherently bad situation.

Developers do, Publishers give out bonuses dependant on achieving a high enough score on metacritic.
Well we're not developers are we? Well maybe some of you are. Also, I might be getting a wrong impression here, but the way I feel is that people who wonder whether a certain site is on metacritic or not are usually more concerned with their precious metascore, rather than with the well-being of developers.

Still I don't think Rockstar North receives bonuses based on whether their GTA games get a 98 or a 97 on metacritic :p

Pretty fun to see someone downrate a game about crime because the protagonists are criminals.

Guess the same person hates Breaking Bad because it involves people "Breaking Bad" and making drugs.

This is sarcasm, right? Right?

Pretty sure a person who doesn't like porn isn't going to like porn movies.

I'm glad they did. Sleeping Dogs did a nice trick of making you hero and anti-hero, so any action, good or bad, could be justified, but GTA's different. When it comes to being a prick, GTA is king, and it's a king with a very real kingdom (unlike Saints Row, where your rampant murder sprees are just goofy and the plot matches that), so they needed to address the nature of the characters and fix them to fit.

Not that everyone is going to play as Trevor when they're doing brodies on a hooker's corpse, but you know.

Lol Okay buddy. Take it down a notch. The only thing that separates them from a so called "C-class" developer is their bank account.

Escapist will push the metacritic score to 98

No need from Escapist for that. 11 reviews on 12 included for the moment are 10. When they'll begin to include all the 9's the game got, it will fall at 97. It will probably be below GTAIV when all is done.
