Guardian: Sony ends Playstation 2 production worldwide

Most signs seem to be pointing towards the PS4 launching sometime in the last half of the year. I mean, Sony literally have next to nothing announced for the PS3 in Q3 and Q4 when it comes to software.

Plus, the last half of 2013 is also barren for third party releases right now too for the 360/PS3, it isn't even funny.

I'm just now realizing this. Lol.

RIP last great console.

Love how it was trendy to hate it during it's lifetime but it transending it's haters and rivals to ascend to the console heavens.

It's looking that way. The big hint is the fact that they're releasing a Naughty Dog game only 5/6 weeks after a Studio Santa Monica game in the Spring. Never mind the fact Naughty Dog have never released a game before October since Crash 1 and that was August 31st.

There will never be a PS2 after the PS2, the amount of quality exclusives will never be matched.

Fixed. I still have Valkyrie Profile 2, God Hand and DDS 1&2 to complete, and a bunch of games (like Criterion's Black) to buy. And I still play EDF split-screen with a friend from time to time.

I feel almost obliged to purchase a sealed in box PS2 just as homage.

As soon as I heard the news I thought I better buy another PS2 as a back up. I am on my 2nd PS2, my launch PS2 stopped reading discs and my current slim hasn't been turned on in years (not sure if it still works or how long it will last).

I think I'll not buy a new PS2 and instead I may actually now buy Persona 4 (never played a Persona game before) and play my PS2 this weekend and play some of my older PS2 games.

One thing I always felt and shared in conversation with friends was that Sony would and should not announce the PS4 until they retire the PS2 and then should announce it within the same calendar/fiscal year.

One thing I don't have faith in with Sony is that I doubt they will give the Playstation 2 a proper send off. A huge send off could revitalize the Playstation Brand commercially.

It's like the Walkman brand, labeling their phones Walkman would be a huge brand recognition for them.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
As a SEGA fan, at first I wasn't very much of a fan of the system, but it definitely proved itself with its awesome library (whose games I'm still playing/discovering - in the middle of P4 right now), to become one of my favorites. So much better than what came afterwards as far as game consoles are concerned.

I got my PS2 for Christmas 2001 - I saw the writing on the wall with the DC and that all the RPGs were coming to the PS2. FFX, MGS2 and DMC were the games that sold me. I remember asking for one and that Christmas, my mom told me I'd get a gift that I would LOVE. So I'm like "yeah, the PS2. I know." and my mom was like "nope.. you'll see"... so I opened the PS2, copies of aforementioned games, and then got another gift... a small jewelry box. Opened it up and it was car keys to my mom's Accord! Best Christmas EVER!!!

When did PS1 end production? Was it well before the PS3 released?

Seconded. I doubt it would happen, but it'd be really cool to see people shrink the PS2 down even further, and there's obviously still a market for it in the developing world.

Mostly kids, and most of them are getting wiis right now anyway, PS2 had a great run in south america.. just not in brasil where it was launched 3 years ago lol
