Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

I was checking the profil of Alpha Lupi over Bungie.net, and I saw he had something no one else has, named Aliases.

His aliases seems to be his b.net id, but I wonder if it has a link with Destiny, for the in-game part.

For reminder : http://www.bungie.net/en-us/view/profile/index#page=index&mid=3844298

Aliases just show what, if anything, your username and id were if you've ever changed them. My profile used to show mine, but I just noticed it disappeared. Looks like there's a cutoff where changes shown before a certain date just don't appear anymore, and since Alpha Lupi's account was just created a few days ago, after the cutoff for hiding aliases, "his" are still visible. I doubt there's anything too interesting going on there.

That Reach MLG playlist deserves to have better maps. Such a damn shame how crappy Reach maps are, although I guess it's partially the gloomy art style.

I didn't get to play it that much, but MLG Reach was really, really good. Beaver Creek played remarkably well with v7 settings. The Pit was very nice as well.

Interesting thought:

Do you guys think 14-year-olds in 10 years will be talking about Halo 4, 5 and 6 when Halo 7, 8 and 9 come out like we do with Halo 1, 2 and 3?

Also, Plasma Grenades in Halo 1 felt much more unique and acted more as an area of denial with the longer fuse times. First person passenger view is legit. The gunplay in this game is phenomenal, the feel is not just nostalgia.

STOP USING THESE 343!

cosigned.

It makes every encounter feel like one-offs, without continuity. Having a pelican flyover, with the ramp coming down and dropping you off is classic Halo. That or drop pods. But these portals are about as interesting as a game with an amnesiac main character.

They're even worse when you come out the other side only to have a different weapon loadout then when you jumped in.

They just feel... lazy.

(Funny enough I'll make an exception here for Spartan Ops, because of the nature of that mode, and because the portals are a more important part of the story.)

I don't think the nostalgia factor will carry over for Reach or 4. They aren't a genre and/or generation defining event. You can't say that many/most of the people on the 360 today bought their console specifically because they wanted Halo - that happened with 2 and 3. Reach and 4 didn't pave the way for any groundbreaking games on a console and they didn't necessarily attract big numbers. They don't even have a real competitive scene (let's not forget the ESPN Halo 3 Top 10 - that was a crossover that gamers can be fucking proud of).

So... no. I doubt there will be legions of people who are nostalgic over Reach and 4. I would bet ODST has a bigger following a decade after launch than Reach in the same time frame.

Doodled an idea for a revised Promethean Knight class - the Lancer.

It's meant to be a bread-and-butter, jack-of-all-trades enemy. It's high-ranking but not a specialist, leading other troops into battle armed with either dual Suppressors or Light Rifles. Proficient in ranged combat, melee attacks, and grenades, it has a variety of methods to be approached. Notably aggressive AI even compared to other units. In terms of power, it could take about 4 or 5 minor Elites or two to three Specialists. Also noteworthy is that it's designed explicitly to counter being assassinated: all of its melee attacks rely on its legs (because both of its major arms are guns), hence the spikes or "spurs." It can perform agile knees and even weird gyroscopic roundhouse kicks to take out enemies attacking it from behind.

In the event that you do somehow manage to assassinate it, it'd probably be one of the more rewarding ones - something like grabbing its lesser arms from behind and giving it a firm kick in the posterior to unhinge it from its legs, ripping its chest cavity further open to disable the arms, and then winding up a donkey punch hard enough to blow the damn thing's head clean off in one swing.

It's a massive target due to how big its chest and arms are, though, not to mention the head's practically in the dead center of it in a standard combat stance.

I like your pictures.
I like your weapon ideas.
I like your vehicle ideas.

Fuck the haters.

Seems redundant. Either you would have to scale up Prom Knights, or scale these down. There's no Promethean enemy that fills the gap between a dog and a Knight. A badass that's similar to fighting four Elites seems a bit much.

I can't imagine Bungie making a game that even resembles Halo. They didn't spend nearly a decade making them, to continue another decade of making them the same.

Set expectations accordingly. Competitive multiplayer can mean anything. They though Reach was great competitive multiplayer.

I'm more excited to see something new. They're saying they took the FPS genre further. I'd like to see their new world, their art direction, see Marty's new music. Say what you will, the music in Reach was really good, almost perfect at some moments. He's created music that is almost instantly recognizable. The music in Halo 4 is forgettable. I don't even remember any piece and I've best the campaign twice. All I remember mostly is the wailing in the menu and only because it sounds like shit compared to the monks.

There is no way Bungie won't have ADS in this game. They don't want to make Halo, they won't be hampered by the limitations of Halo. Customizable weapons, I'm guessing it'll be tied into the fact so many thought it would be an MMO/RPG-elements game, you can upgrade a pistol, shotgun, rifle, etc.

I have a feeling multiplayer won't be equal starts, but here's hoping they read forums about why Reach wasn't such a hit and allow for custom options and games.

They'll probably definitely have some form of a forge world/map editor because they know how popular it was.

I'm just excited because Bungie games are polished. There isn't much missing at launch, they don't ship until they are completely happy. The halo 2 experience and the stuff they had to cut is probably what lead them to wanting to leave Microsoft within a few years.

I'm almost certain Destiny will probably play more like Gears/Call of Duty then it will play like Halo.

I think the most thing I'm excited for is the fact Bungie will probably start up Bungie Pro again and I'd be able to save screenshots, videos, make them count again.

For me, Halo is perhaps finished. I'm going to get Gears: Judgment soon, that'll cannibalize my multiplayer time, then bioshock infinite etc. Maybe I'll go back to Halo 4, but I doubt it.

I'm just a junior but I've been lurking here for years, it would suck to see half of Halogaf become part of DestinyGAF. But it's easy to post/keep up with both threads.

Who has the next halo ot? And who has the first destiny ot? Duncan?

I'm just brainstorming, but at this point the Lancer would be the strongest non-specialist (think Heavy Weapons or Melee-Centric) Knight with approximately 5 Knight classes under it being not only considerably weaker, but smaller in size. The sheer diversity in silhouettes similar to TF2 would keep things fresh along the three primary species which would in turn have further subspecies (a Promethean Stalker would look nothing like a Promethean Mortar class, for example).

Depending on how alive Halo is, I would suggest:

OT15 | Et TU, Brute? by Dax
OT16 | ONI's Marathon to Destiny by Over
OT17 | ??? by yours truly

I still think the elite-level enemy niche is left vacant in the prom roster. Knights are bullet spongy and work best when they're not the main caste of enemy you have to fight. Dogs are fodder. Something needs to round Prometheans out.

Are your dudes bullet sponges too?

Only the heaviest of the heavy Promethean classes is a bullet sponge and that's because he's essentially a stationary Hunter/turret. The Prometheans otherwise have much lower health, instead focusing on damage output and cunning as well as teamwork to be a challenge. Watchers can provide some pretty aggravating bonuses if not dispatched properly, but have their power sets so separated by class that it's more a matter of picking your battles wisely than throwing your controller out the window.

Not including larger sentinel-like minibosses (which, upon "death," could be used as vehicles), my Promethean listing would be something like:

Pawns. Weakest enemies.
Crawlers, at least three classes - an Alpha, a Beta, and a Revival class. Alphas are slightly more heavily-armored and lead packs, Betas are your bread-and-butter enemies. Revival units are pawns trying to make it to "the end of the board;" they're weak but incredibly agile and make beelines for sites of dead Knights. If they reach a digital corpse, they'll sacrifice themselves to bring it back.

Rooks. Between Crawlers and Knights in power.
Sentinel Minors use the Oscillator's primary fire. Sentinel Majors use the Oscillator's alt fire (a weaker Sentinel Beam that's deadly against unshielded targets, meaning you want to take these out immediately if you're caught shieldless). Sentinel Primes use the Sentinel Beam which is about as powerful as the SAW now, and are shielded.

Bishops. Support units incapable of damage.
Watchers come in a few varieties now and can't revive anything. They project different-colored beams onto targets so you know what bonus they provide. These include Damage Boost, Speed Boost, Overshield, and Active Camo. There are also the asshole Watcher Spotters, which will constantly try to stay near you emitting a loud noise (but doing no damage) to give your position away. If you kill a Watcher's Knight but leave the Watcher alive, it will work for you until killed or replaced.

Knights. Second-strongest units.
Knights come in a few varieties.
Lancers are jacks-of-all-trades specializing in Suppressors or Light Rifles.
Hackers will run around the battlefield composing equipment, disabling vehicles, and so on. They WILL attempt to shred you to bits if you get in their way, but clever movement can outsmart them into getting assassinated.
Snipers are the weakest Knights and will use either Light Rifles or dual Beam Rifles. They're different from Jackal Snipers because they're constantly finding new vantage points and can hang from surfaces like trees.
Grenadiers will spam the shit out of light explosive weapons and use unlimited grenades. They aren't meant to kill you so much as they are to disorient the shit out of you.
Heavies look similar to the original design for the Knights. They are the ONLY bullet sponge enemies, but are huge targets and barely move. They're more like mobile assault platforms similar to Hunters, but with more damage output and less Melee capability. They use two Nova Cannons (Promethean heavy weapons) mounted on their back; damaging them enough would cause them to drop one Cannon, which you could use to kill them much easier.

Queens.
Supplementary characters that don't engage in combat, instead aiding you or guiding you through levels. See Engineers or "Ambient Promethean Knights."

Kings. Mini-Bosses
Kings are "Relics," which are essentially legacy Promethean soldiers that survived in powered-up robot bodies, most likely awakened by Chief at some point. You'd generally fight them in one-on-one encounters save for a few Watchers or Sentinels. They'd have special combat roles such as relying on space martial arts or Jetpacking to spice encounters up a bit, but would likely only show up once or twice per mission if that.

This map is very detail and has a some good close combat areas.

I would like to have some people try this map out? I have it set up for Dominion as of right now.

What should I call it?

I'm going goosing. It's time to know Analbumcover from the top spot. He's been there far too long. Also I gained some insight into a scarier part of GAF today. Not as bad as I originally believed.

Goosing time.

I agree with a lot of this post. Now that I have something Bungie-related to be excited about, my interest in Halo is starting to fall. I'm ready to explore a new universe with that magical Bungie feel. New music, better visuals, more attention to detail... I'm not going to ask for another Halo. I want something different, because it isn't tied down to the Halo name. It's up to 343 to keep Halo relevant, and I'll continue to keep track of their efforts.

In regards to the competitive multiplayer issue, if Bungie does head down the road of even less equal starts and things like that, well, perhaps 343 will be kind enough to fill that void. We'll see.

Seems like Abandon shows up the most for Pro too, which is unfortunate since the map sucks (fixes or not, not a fan at all). Also played Rail once, and gotta say, it's a pooper.
