IGN: Stellar Blade has racist artwork which will be removed with the day one patch

We‘re not using it to describe anyone with a mental disability. We’re using it to describe fucking idiots.
Yeah I know and I have no problem with that. I just talking about the people that say we can't use it because it is somehow making fun of people with mental disabilities.

How is this a story, IGN?

Coincidental placement of one graffiti asset in an unreleased game could be construed as a non-offensive way of referencing an offensive word, but will be changed before any member of the public gets to play it.

NEWS!
Grasping attempt at another reason to hate on Stellar Blade.

Crimer? There's some really dumb things people submit on urban dictionary. Words that I've never seen used anywhere by anyone.

😂

Yeah that is precisely where I have heard it being used in a deliberately demeaning context. This is just... Lol

Indeed. 👍

Look I'm not trying to say you guys are wrong or anything but, if you're in America (or even maybe places like the UK) and you play games and you're on the internet (especially on certain streams/websites or other spots like 4Chan)...you'd know that in those contexts 'Hard R' these days in gaming spaces definitely refers to the N-word. The blatant racist version, which ends in an 'r'.

Like I'm not going to pretend someone in that type of location who might be a bit uninformed is an outright racist for mistakingly assuming it could've been in reference to that context, just like how I'm not going to pretend that was the actual intent of the devs with it being in the game in the first place. We don't have to keep making judgements at the extreme on either end.

...although it getting replaced with 'Crime' in the update incidentally forming another questionable context is a bit suspect. Though really, I blame retarded Western edgelords mainly who always toxify stuff online thinking they're the world's best undiscovered comedian. That said, it does also lend possible credence to the previous bit being a bit more intentional than assumed because what are the chances of having two instances of slang terms with questionable meanings in similar contexts back-to-back?

Again, I'm not saying it was intentional the first time or even with the fix. But if before I'd say it was a 5% chance of "that" intent, now I'd probably say there was a 10% chance 🤷‍♂️.

All this shit surrounding the game these past months, is such a smart publicity stunt, for a game that screams mediocre on all fronts.
Good job game!
Spoken like someone that had no oportunity to play the demo. Good job fellow poster.

So I can see how this is a bunch of folks reaching. Playing the game I don't think I would have given this a second thought. Where is your mind for you to immediately think of the racial context of this?

Crimer is even more of a reach, come on. It’s not even racial and who the hell had honestly ever used or heard that before today. Very silly to think a dev that’s under this kind of scrutiny from western media would purposely add a derogatory slang term that only western media would pickup on and then double down with another.

Everything is racist when you want it to be.

This is all over the place. The post I quoted are the exact instances where I have heard "Hard R" used - as a description for an R-rated movie that pushes the limit towards an NC-17 rating, either through violence, near pornographic activity or excessively over the top sexual violence (think Monica Belluci in "Irreversible"). The other context has been when someone wants to call someone a "retard" but caches it in a verbal term that a (usually older) person within earshot will not understand. I'm not on 4chan, and I don't know what "streams" you are referring to. Similarly, I had never heard of "Crimer" as a racial epithet until a few hours ago. You yourself are using the word "retard" as an epithet, which is entirely your call, I'm not the "appropriate phrases" police. But the indignation is a waste of keystrokes. There are a lot of phrases that people are not familiar with and thereby take no offense to. Three months ago, I had never heard of a "gooner", and every day, I wish I still hadn't. No offense intended, but you are assuming too much about what manner of content people are exposed to, especially people who have outgrown trying to find whatever the current week's outrage is, just for laughs.

Just like China it is time to release different versions with removed words, banners, graffity etc. specifically for USA. I remember there used to be USA specific versions of the games in the 90s...Shame that other countries are affected too.

I'm so lost..

Just when I've been thinking the idiots were losing power we have this and the TR on the front page.

While I do think they are losing their power it's not as much as I thought. This is nothing but a grab. This game is absolutely driving the woke crowd mad.

Hopefully GTA6 loosens the grip some more.

I would change it to a "Hard P" for shits and giggles, but maybe that is just me.

Incidentally, this subject reminds me of something...

It isn't being censored. Sony and Shift Up are doing this on their own, not in response to any activists. Whether or not they should or should not make the change is debatable, but it isn't censorship.

It is self censorship which is a form of censorship. Doesn’t have to involve any activists

It's not really censorship as the Hard R wasn't anything intentional. The Hard graffiti appears throughout the game, this one just happened to be placed next the the R Shop sign. I still think it's a reach to call it "racist" but whatever, this isn't a battle worth fighting since it was completely unintentional.

I'm not personally saying any of this stuff is racist. Haven't even said I personally felt any of it was intentional. Just trying to see it from the perspective of others who aren't being disingenuous or bad faith (so, not from the POV of Western games media for example) but might've heard of the term in American internet culture usage and associated this with that, even if just as an unfortunate incident.

I meant streams like on Twitch; sometimes people jokingly refer to it and the chat (predominantly American) know what they're referring to. It's like when someone says "gamer word". Again, highly American contexts, so I'm looking at that from POV of people reacting, not saying creators in completely different countries removed from that context should be expected to be keenly aware of that at all.

Tho...you really never heard of "gooner" 'till three months ago? For real? That's kind of wild x3.

“Crimer” is this guy, if anything, not some fake slang entry on urban dictionary that doesn’t even come up on Google.

FWIW I hadn't even heard of 'crimer' in any context 'till a few hours ago.

This is not directed at you.

If you're reaching that much for a 'racist phrase', then you are race obsessed and therefore almost certainly racist yourself.

I wish there really were an Armageddon coming. Sweet meteor, hurry up please!
Ah... My bad..... Its early.... MEA CULPA x1000

I get what you are saying, I'm just pointing out that this has nothing to do with being "uninformed" as you mentioned in your previous post, and everything to do with how people's interests and consumption habits change. Seven years ago I used to laugh my ass off every time Dr. Disrespect sang the "Gillette" song on stream. These days? I don't know even know exactly what caused him to move from Twitch to YouTube outside of some thread on here a few years ago that mentioned him taking a camera into a public restroom during some convention. That's how long its been since I've watched him. I don't watch streams much lately, or really in the past few years in general. My Twitch end of the year stats are typically single digit hours. And yes, I was in fact spared from knowing what a "gooner" is until a few months ago. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

There is something in this game that everyone mainstream attack it? Every single day there is something.
I'm just imagining some hacktivist journo spending countless hours and nights in the game just to find something as insanely milquetoast as this to make a fuss about.

Some people, man... :pie_roffles:

I'm British and terminally online, and this is the first time I've ever heard the phrase, for anything.

On 4chan and the like, they just use the actual word, lol.

I thought it was an inadvertent thing that looks like 'harder' and that was just a sex and violence joke.

The world does not revolve around America and their hangups.

To me it's like someone doesn't like beautiful girls. Am I seeing too much in this? :messenger_grinning_sweat:
Frankly, I'm not a fan of such gratuitous coomer content, myself. IMO it just straight distracts from and cheapens the game experience by turning itself into some kind of thirst pandering. I'm definitely in the "dude, just watch porn to release the pressure on your valve" crowd when it comes to games like these.

However, it wouldn't even occur to me in my dreams to go after devs who make these games or players who enjoy them.
Enjoy what you want, really. I don't have to 🤷‍♂️

It is wild to me how some people go so out of their way just to try and find something bad.
In this case, a WILD and frankly funny coincidence.

I'm amused by all the people in this thread who aren't aware of what "hard R" refers to lol. Anyway, maybe "crimer" will become a new meme 😂
