So you'll lose your tongue? That sounds horrible :(

Couldn't you keep your speaking abilities with a prostethetic tongue?

I'v been smoking for six years. Only really heavy for four years though an I feel the same : /

Only really heavy this last year for me. I'm fucking retarded because I stopped for almost a month last year right before New Year's and decided to usher the new year in with a couple of last cigs before calling it quits for good. I don't know what that triggered in my brain but it's been downhill ever since. I haven't gone more than a week without smoking since. Sucks.

But yeah, shit like this added to the fact that I'm way out of shape now = screw this. I just threw my last pack away.

Brutal, man. I would do what you suggested. Read the dictionary out loud while you can, archive how your voice is. Reconstruct it later.

That's a mega bummer though. Thank goodness for an internet that doesn't require voice, though.

Sorry to hear that.

Obviously, recording words and sentences is a very good idea. Don't hestitate to spend a lot of time and money doing it. And make a lot of backups. Even if you can't have a robotic Hawking kind of deal just yet, I'm sure it'll be a lot easier / better in the near future.

My question to you: If you have to go through the surgery, have you thought about your last words?

My condolences on the possibility of losing your voice. On the bright side however in this day and age the difference between everyone else sitting in a circle on their phones texting and you, will be that you have a good excuse.

I'm curious how this would affect us in our daily life. At first I thought it might not be that bad given that I'm more introspective in person anyway. But I think it would be a lot heavier a penalty than my imagination gives it credit for. What does GAF think it would be like to not be able to speak?

I don't even know about GAF anymore...

Keep your chin up OP. There's always a possibility for a miracle.

Welp. Long story short I probably have tongue cancer. After numerous doctor visits and ruling out other diseases, I'm going to an oral cancer specialist Monday.

If the diagnosis is confirmed and they want to operate I will never be able to speak again. At this point it's still up in the air but its not looking good.

So GAF, my Internet buddies, how would you cope?

My idea is to record every word in the dictionary and get some Stephen Hawkins shit going on. I'm definitely going to have to learn ASL so any gaffers who are fluent and would like to Skype or Facetime let me know.

I know this thread is a downer but honestly, I'm not that depressed. Probably since I know it's my own fault for smoking for so long.

Edit: I'm at work but will be checking tread periodically.
How did you know something was wrong?

What kind of job do you do? If I lost my tongue I wouldn't be able to do half my job. On a bright note, If this does happen you can be one of those cool silent dudes who communicates with a simple look or gesture. Like silent bob!

You will still be able to make the following letters.

most of the vowels. m p b v f (I also think h, k and g, not sure about those two though).

May not do much good without the rest of the alphabet but maybe this information might help you some way.

I know this isnt much of a condolence but at least you can still see and hear. You wont have to miss out on the beauty of art and music. Again I know thats not much but hopefully it helps a little bit.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I don't know how I would handle such news, but it probably wouldn't be as good as you are.

I agree with the idea of recording messages for loved ones. Do you have a wife? Any kids?

Well, there are...many gestures involved, but uh...

Recording your voice is a very, very good idea. The technology to replicate your speech based on that is essentially here already and will likely be perfected well within our lifetimes.

Best of luck to you and props for your positive attitude.

I've never heard about tongue cancer.
Sorry to hear that you may have one. Hope it isn't true.

As other's already said, todays technology, speech synthesizers et al., will definitely be helpful to you if the operation will be required. Still, it really sucks :(

Sorry to hear that. Can't even imagine how it would be not to be able to speak. Glad to hear that you won't let the news bring you down, though. That is a great and inspiring attitute.

Sorry to hear, Wiicast. At least its a treatable form of cancer and that your quality of life suffer a huge hit (not to belittle the consequences of not being able to speak or anything).

I'm really sorry to hear that. Cancer is so mean :( I like your attitude towards things, though. I think you're going to handle what comes at you brilliantly. Best wishes, man.

God, I don't know how I could cope. While there's ways around the communication issue, food is my life and my biggest passion. I'd be so sad to never taste it fully again. I would go to as many restaurants as I could before the operation if it comes to that, op.

While it sucks, I can think of a lot worse things to lose.

As said, with internet and computers you can still function 99% in society.

It's possible that it could spread to the lymph nodes.

Eh, pretty much every cancer can spread to the lymph nodes :p

to the OP: Good luck. Hope you retain your ability ot speak, but if not, there are other ways to communicate. Don't let it stop you.

Beat that cancer.

That sucks man, best of luck on the diagnosis and and alternate treatments.

To be honest if something like this happened to me I would lose myself in MMOs and never surface again most likely. Sounds pathetic but I bet that would be a major escape route. I might resurface one day after I've dealt with the initial shock.

Dude, that sucks :(

Hope you get well, and you're able to sing on the shower soon (to the detriment of your neighbors!)

I'm glad to see you're already coping well with the worst possibility, you seem like a strong guy.

Possibly a stupid question but how will you eat?

I believe this depends on the amount of tongue removed, there should be some muscle left further back which will help push food into the throat more easily. Although the efficiency moving the food around to chew it in the mouth will obviously be impacted.

To the OP, you have my condolences, and thankfully it doesn't sound life threatening. Still let's hope for the best after you've seen the specialist.

Sorry to hear that, man. Hope it doesn't come to that.

Recording messages for loved ones is a great idea.

My thoughts are with you man. A lot of cancer on GAF lately. :(

GAF has 1000s (tens of 1000s?) of active members, so there's probably someone going through just about every type of human experience at a given time. Unfortunately some of those experiences are bad.

OP, I think recording your voice is a good idea, but I agree that you should focus on recording inspirational messages to family and friends. I am not completely up to date on what technologies exist to assist people who have lost their ability to speak, but they are getting more sophisticated all the time. The sophistication of prosthetics and transplant procedures are also increasing rapidly, so even if the diagnosis is bad, I wouldn't lose out hope on never speaking again.

Staying positive is probably the biggest step.

That sucks. I hope you get good news and won't loose your voice.

Almost was in a similar position 20 years ago. I had a couple of (at that time) state of the art surgeries on my vocal chords. In the end it all worked out okay, but I wasn't able to talk for a couple of weeks.

I got through it using a lot of notepads, but in this day and age I would recommend an iPad or something. Sign language is still something not a lot of people now so a tablet is easy to write stuff on and show people if you need to ask questions.

Wow, sucks man. Technology today definitely makes it easier to communicate if you're unable to physically speak.

That kinda sucks, but it does beat losing your ability to see and/or hear at the very least.
You should totally try to record as many words as possible (please do use a high-quality mic though) and see if you can get yourself a robot voice box set up with your own voice.

Welp you've scared the shit out of me. I've had this wart looking thing on my tongue for like a month or two and am getting it removed on friday and the doctor I saw said "its probably not cancer" but fuck now I'm scared as fuck at the possibility at losing my whole tongue.

I smoke a'lot also but I'm only 22 so I hope it's not the case :(

Geez. I would suggest getting a very loyal Parrot and train it before its to late. Or maybe someone from unemployed-gaf would like to help you out ;)

Anyways keep us updated.

feels bad man...

on the bright side, it's way easier now than it was a decade or so ago. if you want to communicate with random people you can type stuff in your cellphone and show it to them. SMS, emails and other text based formats are all standard forms of communication.

Anyone that stays as positive as you are being after hearing such news, gets all the respect in the world from me. I definitely hope the best for you and know you'll make the best out of it given the vast communication options available. Definitely go about recording your voice and keeping those memories.
