We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
GAF Thread: Freeware Games
So many free games are out there and so many are just really good games that a large majority of people will never play. From developers with large portfolios of freeware games, to free alphas and betas, to the hundreds and hundreds of entries for game jams such as Seven Day Roguelike, Seven Day FPS, Ludum Dare, and others, to the talented work of Digipen students, there's just an astounding amount of quality free games to play and enjoy that this thread tries to uncover.
5th post, thread is now open. And we are so Indie, that we dont even follow thread naming conventions anymore! ( IndieIndie Games 2015 [July] )
No wait.. actually its a metaphor for the AAA industry and their reusing assets for massive grinding and filler content instead of focussing on original game ideas.
Alright, content is in. As usual, let me know in the thread here if anything broke. You are seeing the title twice, you are just drunk.
Also: we had a craaaazy good voting month this time. Crosscode, Invisible Inc, TIS-100, Neon Struct, Serpent in the Staglands, Axiom Verge, Cosmochoria, Kerbal Space Program, Magicka 2, Malebolgia, Snakebird (still need to play that), Kung Fury, Guns Gore & Cannoli, Crhoma Squad..
It was interesting seeing the post gaining content xD
Edit: Her Story is listed two times, Endless Legend is listed even though it was released past year, Lethis - Path of Progress doesn't have a price, wasn't Hardlands featured past month?
Played through Her Story today (while getting absolutely nothing else done as a result), and wow is it something else. It's REALLY HARD to talk about it without spoilers, but seriously everyone should check it out!
Her Story demands a lot from the player in order to see and understand everything hidden inside it, but the depth of its narrative and the intricacy in which it’s woven together rewards those who put more time into learning its secrets. It puts all its trust into the player not to cheat their way to a resolution, but is backed by such an engaging web of plot (delivered entirely through a masterful, demanding performance by Viva Seifert) that anyone who doesn’t give it the attention it deserves is only cheating themselves in the end.
Pretty sure a few of the games in the released sections were accidentally included due to the Summer Sale posts. Tolagal, Miss Take, Next Penelope, Lumino, Grav, Hardland, Lakeview, etc
But on that note, anyone play Depths of Tolagal? Any impressions?
I mentioned in the June thread I would post some impressions of GRAV but it turns out that the minimum specs require 8 GB of RAM and I only have 4, so the game runs out of memory and crashes while trying to generate the world. Whoops!
My opinion too, lets just roll with it :p
Indies' so nice, we had to say it twice
Between The Swindle, Feist, Absolute Drift, Interstellaria, ICY, Olympia Rising, and possibly Calvino Noir, July's going to be another good month for indies
Love it too, such a great experience.
Edit
Just went all in on that Humble Bundle so I'm giving away a bunch of stuff:
Trine 2
Hack & Slash
Are the others worth keeping? Gravity Ghost and City Sleeps look ok but if someone wants them I'd rather they go to a good home.
I second this, I have 8GB RAM and a sort of decent graphics card in my notebook, but this game is quite the resource hog. I can play it, but it has a lot of stuttering. Might be digging through the options later to see if I can make it decently playable.
Painters Guild is releasing Sep 1. Let's see if I was right to keep up with this game.
Edit: Her Story is featured twice in the OP btw, as Panda has already pointed out.
Toma I wanted to PM you a write-up about Pip, but here's a quick synopsis or review if you don't mind.
Adv. of Pip is a 2D platformer where you play as Pip a red square Pixel, as you progress through the game you get the ability to transform into bigger pixely humanoid forms which are used to progress through the levels.
The objective of the game is to reach the end of the level, along the way, each level has 3 villagers to rescure, finding one may even lead to a quick short cut or safer path to progress through.
If anything, attribute the game to the way Super Mario games did their levels during the 2D era.
The game has some really good platforming ideas and is as pure a platformer game as Shovel Knight is.
While the graphics may not be its strongest point, they're still nice looking.
If you need a game to scratch that platformer itch, def. drop $15 on this game as it's a treat from start to finish.
Game just released on IOS, currently on sale for $5
Well everything's cheaper on iOS, but if you can get that go for it.
It was worth $15 for me :3
If you think that's a good deal, Door Kickers is $5 on iPad too, $20 on PC. Same content except for the level editor, and cross-platform saves
On the subject of Adventures of Pip:
I actually had a friend message me today because he saw the game, and remembered a conversation we had years ago about me wanting to make a game similar to it. My vision was quite different, so I was reluctant when it appeared on kickstarter, but I'm curious to see how it parallels my ideas, so maybe I should finally pick it up.
Recently I stumbled upon another concept I had, with a brawler who fights with his facial hair (and long hair in my vision). One of the various indie accounts I follow retweeted it, but I don't believe it has been mentioned here in an indie thread yet:
Beard Blade - ????
Beard Blade is a 2D platformer inspired by SNES & GBA legends, developed by a team of two.
On another note, I'm ecstatic that Shape of the World was successful on Kickstarter. After seeing it in motion, it has quickly become one of my most anticipated titles.
Voxatron got a full, paid release, huh. I wonder if I'd like it better after all these years.
Game Over - Fresh and positively gorgeous take on Marble Madness that's suffering from serious control issues. Given the perspective, you partake in a lot of diagonal movement in this game. Too bad that diagonal jumping does not seem to be working. Would probably work splendidly with a controller so a desktop version might be in order.
Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition - If you enjoy quick run & gun shooters, the MSF games are no-brainers. Splitting up the experience into short, bite-sized time attacks and adding in the mechanic of switching between layers of fore- and background makes for a well-rounded, fun experience. If you've got the option, go for the 3DS version for that extra pop.
Thanks, and if it didnt turn out anything worthwhile I still commend your patience :p
I did not expect to become the ambassador for that game in the Indie threads when I first posted about it, lol.
Random first impressions talk:
The Curious Expedition is not as good as I thought it would be. The general core concept is very similar to FTL and its a very charming game, true, but from my first hour or so, it felt it has some design issues that dragged down the experience for me, making it seem unbalanced and a bit repetetive.
I'll need to play some more to get to the bottom of it, but I am not quite as quickly falling in love with it.
And I was very interested in that game. D:
Butsball looks rather fun. I wonder if it has much of a community. I'm liking this trend of abstract action titles that focus on gameplay and quick turn around of ideas.
Picked up Her Story and D4 recently so I'm playing through those slowly. Keen to pick up VIDEOBALL and Rocket League this month.
Butsbal would definitely be a game worth picking up if you have mates to play with - there are bots but there is no active community just now.
Shame really as with some tweaks and extra additions it could be a good party game!!!
Consortium is criminally overlooked. The first game was doing incredible stuff with narrative design.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/12/30/consortium-retrospective/ said:
Unlike any RPG I can name, Consortium throws you in with no map, no introductory cutscenes or tutorial. When you start, you don’t choose a character, you sign a disclaimer. It’s disorientating and strange, and immediately different, dedicated fully to its central conceit; you the player are accessing a satellite, provided by the developer, iDGi, that allows you to control a man known as Bishop 6, on board an aircraft, in the year 2042.
It nails role playing as a person in a specific situation, to an extent no other game has. Paradoxically, it achieves this by telling you nothing.
And it's an immersive sim! The best genre, objectively speaking.
Admittedly, the first game was held back by the developer's decision to use the Source engine. They discuss the issue in this interview. They switched to Unreal Engine 4 for the sequel and it's going well so far.
Here's a screenshot of the sequel that they provided to Kickstarter backers of the original game:
Her Story
What a fascinating experience. It's more of a narrative puzzle box, but ideally I'd call it a narrative adventure game. Literally. In adventure games, you collect items, and need to figure out how and when to use them to solve puzzles and continue. In Her Story, you need to use keywords and phrases to discover new videos, and figure out how and when the videos piece together to figure out the story. The "puzzle solving" is cerebral.
Saying anything about the story would spoil the experience, but it's a gripping, compelling story, anchored by an excellent actress.
Infinifactory
It's SpaceChem...in 3D. Well, not exactly, but it has that SpaceChem DNA and it's a Zachtronics game so you know what means. The addition of a Z-axis seems minor, but it isn't. Building tangible objects rather than elements feels more satisfying IMO too. Not much more I could say that others haven't already said.
Ronin
Ronin's story is light, more of a framework for the action than a compelling narrative. Each target is approaching in a similar fashion; this means Ronin can feel quite repetitive, as the gameplay doesn't really evolve beyond that core concept. But what Ronin lacks in story and variety, it makes up for in style and fun. You start with an effective array of skills that only expands as you progress. Special abilities such as holographic decoys, teleporting attacks, a ranged sword attack, and more allows you to execute stylish attack combos. A typical encounter has you smashing through a window, leaping between projectiles before swinging into a guard, knocking him through the opposite window, then using your accrued skill points to teleport to a distant enemy and continue your slaughter. It's fast, strategic. and always satisfying to clear a room through a well-planned chain of kills, leaps, and gadgets.
Dolly
From the first screen, Dolly presents a wonderfully artistic environment, a decaying world dominated by its bright red sun contrasting against a grey-ish landscape and flowing waterfalls. Your enigmatic quest passes through dense forest, up massive chains, and across spike-festooned ruins. Dolly may look pretty, but its short journey is one of precise double jumps over spikes and across deadly gaps. It is kind of buggy too, somewhat expected from a student project, but still worth checking out
That sucks to hear - that and Convoy are on my list.
But this is great news! I have the first one unplayed on my GoG - I might remedy that soon once I finish Beyond Good & Evil.
