Is your avatar a bunch of crappy text? The thread to fix that lives again!

I still say that my "avatar of shame" would be a better choice than the one in the OP.
Comic Sans is cruel and unusual, and punishes the board not the poster.

reposted from the OT avatar thread:

If anyone actually wants to use it, please rehost.

Why would anyone want that instead of their real avatar? :lol

If there's one thing I've learned in my lengthy tenure here at NeoGAF, it's that there's an audience for ANYTHING.

Why did this thread get demoted? :S It's not even the 8th yet.

I had a hard time reaching the 150kb limit with my current avatar :S It IS under the limit but just barely so don't take it the wrong way ^^ I'm just a bit newbish with image programs.

I was wondering what will happen if someone had "L’Origine du monde" from Gustave Courbet as an avatar?
Should he become banned. I recall that this is art and not pornography. :D
(search wikipedia if you don't know what is this painting)

This is a strange phenomenon with NeoGAF. I tend to overlook sticky'd threads, and others seem to have the same problem.

If you have to ask, it's probably questionable. Pretty good rule that doesn't always apply but it's better to be safe than sorry, you know? And after checking google, I think it's safe to say that you shouldn't even have had to ask in this case :lol Dear God. Art or not, I don't want that on my screen all the time.

How strange. Seems to have worked though. I read the sticky but I didn't bother writing in it until it got unstickied. Definitely caught my attention in a different way.

This is the first time I've seen this thread. Thanks for unstickying.

If you have a non-animated avatar and it is square or wider than it is tall, then there is no point asking if it is valid as it almost certainly is (unless it is REALLY big when you view it manually).

The rules are simple. File size must be less than 150kB (153,600 Bytes) and the aspect ratio must not be taller than 3:4. In other words, the image width must be at least 3/4 (three quarters) of the image height.

Here's the steps to check your avatar on your own:

1: (Firefox/IE/Most everything else except Chrome) Right click (Control-click on Macs) your avatar and select "Properties". You will see something like:
properties.png

The important lines are Image Dimensions and Size of File. Note the "scaled to" part of the dimensions. The image will always be scaled to 90px x something px. If the something is less than or equal to 120, then the aspect ratio of your image is fine. If the file size is less than 150kB, then you are fine.

2: (Chrome) Right-click the image and press 'Inspect element'. Then look for the box 'Metrics'. Apply the same reasoning used in step 1.

3: (if you have access to the source image but can't right-click, etc.) Look at the properties of the image on the drive (or website or whatever) to get it's height, width and size. If width >= 3*height/4 and size <= 150kB, you are good.

Why do people want stupid tags? Makes them stick out. Of course if too many people get this kind of avatar it kinda defeats the point.

I don't want to use it. I'm just wondering and I'm curious to see the site policy towards that.

May as well ask this here. How do I get an avatar that changes every time like Red Scarlet's?
I was planning on hosting the pictures on my own server if that makes any difference.

Damn my avatar scaled to 90x121. Beaten by one pixel. So I changed it to this one.

Comes with the NeoGAF Gold membership plan.

The feature is also sometimes (but only rarely) awarded to members for outstanding actions in the service of the community.

So if I take a bullet for EviLore I'll get a changing avatar?

Nope. Way too big a filesize.

I scaled it down a bit, but had to lose a lot of frames, which sped it up. But I inserted a lapse time between frames to slow it down. Unfortumately, it doesn't run smooth any more. But here it is anyway.

Also, rehost it, I'll remove it from my photobucket at some point.

So I'm assuming something like this would be unacceptable:

353a2s2.gif

Most of it's properties are smaller than the set sizes for this forums and I'm not too skilled with using resizing programs on the internet.

Sorry if I'm being dumb, I just want to be sure.

50x50 will scale up to 90x90, so it's within the limits.

It'll look horrible, though.

Thanks for answering. Basically, I wouldn't be breaking any rules then if I used it right ? I don't care if it'd look a little stretched out.

EDIT: Thank you very much for the help DidntKnowJack.

edit: new one. Changed the bg color to a light grey to match the forums better.

Rehost it if you end up using it, though.

Is mine all right? Or should I change it?
It scales to 90*151, so you are way over the limit. It's also partially NSFW, so even if resized it could get dropped.

Also, for the new page:

Are there any online websites/programs that lets you resize/crop/compress animated gifs?
I may be asking too much...is just that I want to use it to just crop...

2rypwrq.gif

..as close to the center as I can, between the size limits..just for this..so downloading a program for just one time..sucks..
