It wasn't far ahead of the conspiracy theories at all. It came out during the height of that conspiracy theory, that's the entire reason it was in it.

Best Bond themes:

Live and Let Die
You Know My Name
Goldfinger
You Only Live Twice
Skyfall
Thunderball (lyrics are hilarious nonsense though)

Despite being (kind of) a Duran Duran fan, I never really got into View to a Kill.

They did this because they'd lost the rights to Blofeld/SPECTRE (which is why his name is never mentioned in the film) and they knew they had a competing Bond film coming in NSNA featuring Blofeld AND Connery, so this was EON's way of "killing him off".

I know why it was done as shitty as it was, but that doesn't make it any less shitty. :p

Oh for sure, its ridiculous.

As far as Bond themes go, my favorites (in chronological order rather than ranked) are:

- Goldfinger (epitomizes the "Bond theme" and the sound of the 60's, and Shirley Bassey is a Bond goddess)
- Thunderball (I love Tom Jones belting this one out, and the orchestration)
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service (why have we not received an instrumental theme since? This piece moves)
- Live And Let Die (just the right track at the right time in the early 70's)
- A View To A Kill (the 80's were a great time for Bond themes, bringing me my 2 favorite themes in consecutive movies, including this one)
- The Living Daylights (the second film in a row with a theme I loved)
- You Know My Name (just like its film did, it brought a fresh, rough-around-the-edges feel back to Bond; I only wish they'd used the less orchestrated and more rocky cut of the track in the film)

My current list is something along these lines:

01. The Living Daylights
02. Casino Royale
03. From Russia With Love
04. The Spy Who Loved Me
05. Quantum of Solace
06. License to Kill
07. Thunderball
08. Goldfinger
09. Goldeneye
10. Tomorrow Never Dies
11. Dr. No
12. Skyfall
13. Spectre
14. The Man With The Golden Gun
15. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
16. Die Another Day
17. You Only Live Twice
18. Diamonds Are Forever
19. Live and Let Die

That said. I really have to rewatch Spectre and On Her Majesty's Secret Service to really be sure where to put them. And I'm really iffy about which one is the better film of Skyfall and Spectre, can't make up my mind on that one yet. But GAF have certainly made me appreciate Spectre less.

Top themes, chronologically:

Goldfinger
You Only Live Twice
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Live and Let Die
Nobody Does it Better
Skyfall

You Know My Name is pretty great, but the above are better. However, the opening credits sequence over which it plays is probably my favorite in the entire series.

There's a time big gap between Carly Simon and Adelle, but IMHO the 80s Bond themes are a bit wanting, despite me liking A-Ha and Duran Duran. Garbage's theme was decent but not quite memorable enough and Goldeneye was Tina trying to outdo Shirley, and that ain't happening.

It's not a theme, but Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of the best pieces of Bond music, period.

And for non-Eon films, The Look of Love is also a great piece of music.

My favorite theme is Nobody Does it Better. Such a beautiful song. I sing it whenever possible! And I'll throw my hat in the ring and say TLD is massively underrated. It has great action, humor, Maryam d'abo, and a great first Bond film performance from Timothy! It sometimes makes me seriously consider putting it over LTK.

I am going have to review them, but Best Opening Credits and best Pre-Credits lists will be forthcoming.

They will be radically different from Best Bond Films, to say the least.

I'll be back with fuller thoughts on everything, but best credits sequences (in chronological order)

From Russia With Love
The Man With The Golden Gun
The Spy Who Loved Me
Goldeneye
Tomorrow Never Dies
The World is Not Enough
Casino Royale
Skyfall
Spectre

Guess I'll continue my Bond watching tonight and go with From Russia With Love. Will be the first time watching it, honestly quite excited.

My list might be a bit unconventional coming from someone who grew up with the 70s and 80s Bond, so I'm not expecting anyone to agree with many of these placings.

1. Goldfinger
2. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. Licence to Kill
4. The Living Daylights
5. For Your Eyes Only
6. Goldeneye
7. From Russia With Love
8. Live and Let Die
9. Casino Royale
10. Moonraker
11. Dr No
12. Octopussy
13. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
14. Thunderball
15. You Only Live Twice
16. Diamonds are Forever
17. Skyfall
18. The Man With The Golden Gun
19. Spectre
20. A View to a Kill
21. Tomorrow Never Dies
22. The World is Not Enough
23. Die Another Day
24. Quantum of Solace

Went to see Spectre with the wife yesterday and she was complaining about the tone of the trailers before the movie. When I asked what she meant she asked why isn't there anything coming out like Spider-Man or something like that. I wondered what that had to do with James Bond and she said because James Bond is like a superhero. I asked what his superpower was supposed to be and she said sex appeal. Just thought that was funny.

My ranking, from a big Bond fan. I haven't gone through a complete watch-through of the series in a while, so I'm only putting my Top and Bottom 5.

TOP:
1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
2. From Russia With Love
3. For Your Eyes Only
4. Goldfinger
5. Skyfall

BOTTOM:
5. Octopussy
4. Diamonds are Forever
3. Moonraker
2. Quantum of Solace
1. Die Another Day

Happy we have an OT like this. Hopefully we can keep it somewhat positive, the negativity/hyperbole in the Spectre thread is overwhelming and certainly uncalled for imo. You can be disappointed without calling a movie a piece of shit or the worst movie ever made.

I'll get to ranking them and other general Bond thoughts later, but first I wanted to share my hopes for the next decade or so of Bond.

Bond 25

Daniel Craig and Christolph Waltz Returns. Waltz breaks out in the opening scene, credits, Bond gets a mission from M in normal Bond fashion and goes on the hunt. This is his last mission, and goddammit no going rogue. At some point Seydoux is captured by Blofeld, and Bond kills him, rescues the girl, they get married and he retires permanently. A happy send off for Craig and Bond.

The Next Trilogy
From now on, Bond movies are only done in trilogies (or 4 movies max). The new Bond is the youngest yet, and instead of having an origin story we have him already established as Bond. That said, in the first movie we get a Dr. No like plot where the villain reveals Spectre to James and MI6 at the very end. From there Spectre (and new Blofeld actors) are involved in the rest of the trilogy. These will stray a little closer to classic Bond than what we got with Craig, but not at the expense of quality. Fire Purvis and Wade.

Get Lana to do the opening credits

Thoughts?

I like the cover played in Austin Powers, but otherwise yes.

So, just do the last 20 minutes of Spectre over again? :p

I think they can do something interesting with Blofeld in the next movie. My fear is that they'll go the obvious route of having him serve a Hannibal Lecter (or Silva-in-prison) role, before releasing him. I'd like to see Blofeld targeted for death by Spectre instead, and Bond forced him to help him out because... I don't know, because he has useful intel or something. It could bring the foster brother relationship into something that actually impacts things.

I can get behind that idea actually! The idea behind my pitch is that I really don't want Seudoux killed and Bond all depressed from that again. I think it would be smarter for them to have a happy ending and Bond retire, especially because this is one of those rare times (maybe the only time?) where EON has known well in advance what movie would be the actor's final appearance of Bond. Capitalize on that, and know that after he is done you will reboot it with another actor anyways.

You put Goldfinger on there twice (3 and 8). I realized that since there was no Die Another Day, which probably belongs at the very bottom.

I'm rewatching The Spy Who Loved Me right now and it's even better than I remembered. If you can get past some of the corniness, it's pretty damned good.

Moore as always is one suave motherfucker.

Major Boothroyd just drove up in the Lotus.

Just finished watching From Russia With Love.

Was definitely better than Dr. No. I felt like this movie didn't really have that lull that its predecessor had in the middle, felt like there was something happening all throughout. That train fight was pretty cool, as was that last boat chase. The helicopter scene was a bit ridiculous, but I suppose they can't have grand action sequences for every scene.

Connery was really good in this one. Just love the way he straightened his suit after the fight with Grant, so Bond-like. Daniela Bianchi (voiced by Barbara Jefford) was pretty good too, but women aren't treated very well in this movie so she didn't really do that much (Bond also just straight out slapped her in that one scene). I was really hoping for Ali Kerim Bay to live but you had a feeling he was going to die...and well wasn't too surprised when it happened. Grant really played up that whole silent henchman thing until the train scene where I all felt it came together rather well.

Pretty skin and bones review since it's almost 1am and I have to get up at 6:30....might edit more in later.

Anyway, good one, will watch Goldfinger next.

Love me some Bond, one of the few traditions I still keep with my father is to go watch the newest Bond film whenever we see each other.

Spectre was fun and it featured my home country.

Moore Era is awesome, screw any and all hate...may Knick-Knack kick you all in the shins.

Spy Who Loved me is top 5 bond. I also enjoyed The Man With The Golden Gun and Moonraker. For Your Eyes Only is pretty good too.

Spy Who Loved Me reminds me of something that the Moore movies do better than the other Bonds-- give you a sense of a huge journey. This movie starts out as some person-to-person legwork and chases, and ends up a full blown war movie by the end. Some of the other Bond eras have big crowd fights at the end, but here it really is a whiole movement of the movie, not just a climatic scene.

20. The Man with the Golden Gun

23. Die Another Day

Those ranking changes are based on a list I did a couple years back, I haven't included Spectre yet as it's too early to put it against movies I've seen so many more times.

Skyfall falls a couple places whilst Casino Royale rises, both great movies but time is being kind to Royale, a really unique Bond movie that will increasingly be a standout going forward. Middle of the list stays the same though will change when I factor Spectre in. Last time I watched A View to a Kill I quite enjoyed it, I'm falling into the "so bad it's good" camp with it, which can't be said for Diamonds are Forever which I hated in my last viewing, such a fall from grace compared to every movie that preceded it.

Just finished watching Goldfinger. It was pretty good, not as good as From Russia With Love though.

Gotta love that intricate scheme to irradiate all of the gold in Fort Knox though. As well as that last fight Bond had with Oddjob. I knew his own hat would lead to his downfall.

It's a shame they bumped 'Surrender' from being the Tomorrow Never Dies theme at the last minute, as that'd be on my top 5 themes if it'd made it.

A lot of people don't realize that the Celine Dion hit "If You Asked Me To" originated as a Bond closing credits theme, by Patti LaBelle.

It's not a Bond THEME, but it's definitely a Bond SONG.

Anybody remember that Bond documentary they used to have on Netflix, Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007. I remember watching it earlier this year, was nice to get some details on all the behind the scenes drama and casting. Doesn't look to be on there anymore, too bad.

Also, I love the title because Everything or Nothing is the best Bond game ever. Only time I actually felt like I was playing a Brosnan Bond movie.

How do people think about continuity in the Bond universe? Not that it is important but the appearance of Blofeld in Spectre and the revelations within are troubling in the fact they even make you think about how the films link together.

There are some obvious lines of continuity. James Bond being the most obvious one, I'm very much in the camp that it should never be considered a code name. He has a simple backstory. Orphaned > Fettes private school > Oxford > Navy > MI:6 . I like to think he has no recent past and every new Bond actor is a clean slate but obviously that isn't the case because there are several references to Tracy in movies after OHMSS. Maybe Tracy is just part of the backstory for those incarnations of Bond.

Are the Daniel Craig movies a true reboot? Almost everything is new except M. Blofeld's appearance and his backstory definitely make it hard to imagine that he is the same character (though modernised) as the previous incarnations who all appeared to be the same person despite the multiple actors.

I've read things where people try and put all the movies in some sort of canonical order which seems really weird to me.

What if they bring back Waltz but not Craig for the next film, it seems like we are in a continuity mess.
and no it still can't be a code name

Why does Craig look like Solomon Grundy here?

Yeah, it was a good doc. I lol'd @ Brosnan saying he really liked doing Goldeneye but couldn't even remember his others because they were so ludicrous.

Original Series: Dr. No --> Die Another Day
New Series: Casino Royale --> present

The reason M wasn't recast between DAD and CR was because they just liked Judi Dench in the role.

Yes, I realize I have Moonraker rather high compared to the norm. But Moonraker is FUN. AVTAK and DAD are not only bad movies but boring and hard to get through. Moonraker is bad and enjoyable at the same time.

You are lucky, you have 2 of of what are consistently named top 5 Bond films to watch! And the very very solid LTK to boot.

I hadn't seen FRWL or OHMSS until I picked up the box set late last year and they both quickly became favourites. It's never too late.
