Japan's northern island of Hokkaido has been hit by a powerful earthquake, triggering landslides that engulfed houses.

At least nine people have been killed and about 40 are missing, say local media reports.

The magnitude 6.7 quake cut power to around three million homes after a thermal power plant was damaged.

The earthquake comes on the heels of a deadly typhoon lashing the west of Japan over the past few days.

so it's not nice
Man I've been all over Japan since the last earthquake earlier in the summer, and typhoon Jebi not even a week ago. Prayers go out.

They'll definitely be walking out of this as strong as ever, no question.

A lot of earthquakes in Asia at the moment. First Bali was hit a couple of times now it's Japan.
Hope no casualties :(

There are always going to be more based on the geography. The only thing they can do is build better houses or develop tech to combat earthquakes?

That's upsetting, hope as many people as possible are ok.

I still get depressed when I think of the 2011 earthquake in Japan, what a horrible event that was.
