Japanese Sales: 2012 Jul 02 - Jul 08

Looks like the addition of a Casual difficulty in EO4 did nothing for its sales.
The figure is almost constant with previous releases. Quite a solid fanbase, Atlus has built.
How was the stock situation ? I thought it was quite tight.
Only on the (relative) long run we'll know if they made a difference.

Glad of the EO IV sales, seems the series is not loosing stream.

Sad about Max Anarchy, I hope western sales are a bit better but I have little hope.

Does anyone know if Culdcept's numbers so far should be considered good or bad? I'm curious to know if Nintendo's use of that sexy female presenter paid off or not.

Id say its not bad considering culdcept has never really been mainstream, but its had a steady following since the sega saturn days.

Might pick up a few new users with how the character art has been redone. The card art is still pretty much the same cept for some new cards included which I think is cool they did that.

Am glad to see that EO4 is doing not too bad. Was expecting the little battlers to be a bit higher, since its a pretty damned good game on the 3DS. I like it better than my PSP version. Though some of the camera work is a bit fubar at times. You had a little more control over it on the PSP I think. Though loading times are nicer. Plus its full voice just like the PSP.

I think the problem with Max Anarchy is how it was promoted here. Basically showed little to nothing about the fact it had a story mode in the game. So I really think people wrote it off as some super expensive powerstone. If anything. All the trailers show for the most part is crazy characters kicking eachothers asses. Not exactly the best way to attract new people to the game. At least thats how I see it anyways.

it had the best opening week for the brand, also if it is a remake of the PS2 episode (am I right?). Probably the drop for the second week (this one) is heavy but I think that it's in line with the expectations

Considering the game is pretty fun, I'm glad I imported it.

I usually don't mind games bombing if I think they are good but not in this case.

Its multiplayer focused so if it flops then there's no one to play against and its a complete waste.

Is userbase relevant? Did we learn nothing from P4G's sales, compared to P3P's?
we learned releasing a major game on a system with no other major game means it will sell;

or that you believe Persona fans bought PSV to play a remake of P4

Is it normal for the 3DS to outsell the entire Playstation ecosystem/family?
it is normal for it to outsell all the other systems combined

Famitsu Sales: Week 27, 2012 (Jun 25 - Jul 01)

Yay numbers. Now we wait for the inevitable first few pages that actually talk about sales and the rest being filled with talk about the Vita. Seriously though, Ghost Recon over Max Anarchy? What are the possibilities that Sega now releases the game as a digital title over here in America in lieu of these numbers?

Hang in there, Ayesha!

Level-5 still clinging to those crutches. Time Travelers' performance will be interesting to see.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.

Thanks.

I really believe it would of been wise to hold off on NSMB2 until the holidays and released Paper Mario or Luigi's Mansion in it's place. You already have Oni Training & the XL coming out soon, and a 3D/2D Mario that is still constantly selling at a top 20 level. Releasing a 2D more so soon is only going to eat into SML3D's sales. Also, a 2D Mario is going to sell extremely well regardless, so give something like Luigi's Mansion 2 a shot to get a huge boost alongside the XL. The XL is not going to cause growth in a series like NSMB, but it potentially could with Luigi's Mansion.

this is the first time I saw this, but it seems that EOI flopped at start. How did it even get to 100k? Really surprising that the series even grew from that.

No, especially for bringing attention to Oni Training too, but especially the West.

Awesome week indeed. EOIV had a great opening, as did LBX. I guess pokemon and DQM helped by bringing in the audience.. in a way one could say level-5 made a good move.

80% drop for Ayesha, bad performance i guess.

Also might we see MK7 out of the top 30 soon?

we learned releasing a major game on a system with no other major game means it will sell;

or that you believe Persona fans bought PSV to play a remake of P4
The idea that people just buy the game because there is "nothing" else to play is just speculation. It could be the reason for some, but for the majority of people? Personally i doubt it. We will never know if the game would have sold less, the same, or more if Vita had a bigger userbase and much more games for it.

What we learned without speculation involved is that a game can sell great despite the userbase being small. What matters is who owns the system. EO4 (to take that specific example) could have sold the same on a much smaller 3DS userbase. It totally depends on how many of the current 3DS owners who have interest in the game.

LBX 3DS being a success is astounding to me. It's the third time Level 5 releases this game in little more than a year... I don't understand why most Level 5 re-releases end up being successful (see IE3: The Ogre and Strikers 2012). Oh well, this pretty much guarantees LBX W will get ported to the 3DS sometimes next year I guess.

this is the first time I saw this, but it seems that EOI flopped at start. How did it even get to 100k? Really surprising that the series even grew from that.

First entry in a relatively niche genre, it probably had a low first shipment. Great word of mouth helped its legs. It's not that uncommon. Sequels then open much higher because more people are aware of it right from the start.

At this point every system outside of the 3DS is either selling really badly or just dead. This fall is the perfect time to launch Wii U to take advantage of that. I was expecting more out of Etrian Odyssey, but that's still a really good debut and we'll have to watch its legs especially with a bunch of 3DS games likely getting boosts from the XL release.

30./28. [WII] Wii Party # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2010.07.08} (¥4.800) - 3.081 / 2.299.841 (-15%)

I'm sorry but this is the unsung success story of the Wii in my opinion. Compared to how this did in the rest of the word, selling this much is freaking insane. I don't think there's anyway Nintendo bundles Nintendo Land in Japan

Level-5 did pretty well this week, I wonder how they'll do next week... :)

EO4's sales are on par with how the series has developed so far, but it'll be interesting to see if it ends up being more front loaded like EO3 was, or if it can sell more than the usual LTD for the series.

Max Anarchy's sales seem to reflect the confidence (of lack thereof) that Sega has in the game. It seems they even made Platinum help promote the game as it got nearer to the release, instead of pushing the game all by themselves as a publisher should. Either way, they're probably done with each other as partners.

Do Monster Hunter and Persona games usually have annual sequels atop of 3 different marketed releases of the same game in a single year?

Can you give an example of a series that may have hurt by too many re-releases?

Being able to market the same game multiple times is exactly why re-releases help strengthen brands. They make money off the hardcore fans who double dip, give people opportunities to jump in and don't leave anybody behind. I don't really see any downside to them except that people might skip the vanilla version in favour of an update, but I doubt very many people do that and at the end of the day they are still getting a version of the game.

The only time I see updated re-releases harming a series with fighting games where the updates are so important that that most people fell screwed over by not getting that version (see: fighting games), but the updates in LBX seem entirely skipable.

Annual sequels are a separate issue entirely and can be a problem partly because they do leave people behind.

Well we aren't talking about the West here. And 1. I don't believe ONI Training in Japan needs attention, and 2. Releasing NSMB 2 right alongside it or even near it will do the opposite; it will draw attention away from ONI Training.

Not really surprising, EO lead the (mini) resurgence of FP dungeon crawler in Japan.
EO fill the need of a niche and word of mouth pushed its sales and formed a solid core fanbase.

Also try look for OG Pokemon or Dr Kawashima first week lol

And let's not forget months of advertisement, including shows, manga and anime.

That same game on PS3 would've sold much more because of the large userbase.

For you to claim that means you think Persona's popularity has reached mass appeal status is isn't really a niche anymore. I guess we'll see when Persona 5 comes out if it can sell 500k.

Is there a reason this switched from Media Create to Famitsu?

I think the 3DS Holy Trinity is finally broken.

That depends on how many PS3 owners that are interested in a Persona game. PS3 havnt had any Persona games, so it is impossible to say for sure. There is upcoming Persona Arena, but that is a fighting game, so i dont think this is much of an indication.

So MGS HD for Vita flopped even harder than the 3DS MGS 3?
It sold less yes. The games being flops however? How much did they expect to sell? I cant imagine it was sky high numbers. MGS3 3DS got a special hardware bundle, so maybe some higher expectation for that game, but who knows.

It's because someone activated a great time machine and so we're back at times when Famitsu numbers come earlier than MC ones. And this time, not even rounded. I'm loving this.
