So, Donald Trump was on The Tonight Show, and Jimmy joked around with him. Now people are pissed at Jimmy for being so lighthearted about the whole situation and social media is fucking mad.

There are too many articles to link; so here is a google link of all the news about it. Most of the headlines and blogs talk about this.

Thoughts? Is this hate deserved? Is it his job to be more critical and be serious, or he did what his job actually is; to fuck around and have a laugh.

Fucking around and having a laugh with normalizes the said thing. This is irresponsible when it comes to dealing with Trump.

Oh absolutely. Fallon was being complicit with a shitty person. Even if his job isn't to be smart politically, that does not mean that as a light-hearted person you can't be called out for giving a platform to someone like Trump.

I glanced at the interview thumbnail on YouTube and cringed. You don't fuck around amiably with a racist pos like Trump, even when your job is to be BFF with everyone.

Fallon has always been shit. Anyone worth their salt (who stays up for these things) should be watching Conan, Trevor, or basically anyone else.

Say what you will about Jimmy Fallon but his show isn't really the place to have any sort of serious political commentary or discussion. He was just doing his job.

He's a talkshow host of a comedy show. His job is to entertain, not engage in rigirous political discussions.

EDIT: On further reflection , I can empathize where people are coming from and my opinion has been swayed. I think it was certainly a mistake for Fallon to invite Trump onto the show in the first place, which only serves to legitimize Trump as a presidential candidate and thus legitimize his views, even in consideration of the interview's largely irrelevant tone.

But he had Hillary on and asked her harder questions than "can I touch your hair"

The notion that this happened because TNS is not that kind of show is silly, because it often is.

This is stupid. Fallon is a comedian, not a journalist, it's not his responsibility to vilify Trump.

Bad argument. Comedians don't get shielded from criticism for something like this, and as noted, he did not treat Hillary the same way.

Leno dominated late night TV because his humored catered to the average conservative voter.

Leno was forever criticized by the coastal media elites for decades for his safe as hell humor.

Fallon is Leno 2.0 so do you really think he's gonna sacrifice ratings and offend such an important ratings demographic?

Moreover, it is a comedy show. This isn't 60 Minutes.

sure he's not a political comedian or whatever, it's not his job (technically) to nail him to the wall... but neither is it his job to make him into a lovable puppy.

comedy is like journalism, if you're not at least a little scared you're not going to get backstabbed they're not doing it correctly

Because Hillary is a serious public servant while Trump is a clown wearing a politician's makeup. They were treated accordingly. This isn't that hard folks.

He had hard questions when Clinton was on, and when this fuckface came on he just joked around.

You do realise that these interviews are planned in advance, right? The hard questions to Hilary were pre planned and approved by her team. And this shit with Trump was pre planned and approved by his team.

If he'd broke script and asked hard questions to Trump, Trump would walk out and they'd have no show. They'd also be screwed because why would anyone go on the show knowing the host will break script if he feels like it.

Only option is not to have Trump on at all.

Nature of these shows is none of what you see is improvised. All that natural banter is agreed upon in advance.

I think everyone understands all that, and no one would have blinked an eye if Leno had joked around with Bob Dole, or Fallon with Romney.

Trump is an entirely different entity. He caters to hate groups and bigots and genuinely awful human beings.

Would you be ok with Fallon joshing around with David Duke?

Him being treated like a clown and not a politician is why Trump is doing quite as well as he is. People are not unaware of why Fallon did what he did, but there is not a single soul who has done what Fallon has done and is not an abhorrent shithead for it.

But he is running for President of the UNITED states. He is a politician now. Its not time to get all cute with the guy.

It's as if GAF is just now realizing that all of late night TV is preplanned including the interviews.

Fallon is the legacy of Leno, ass kissng to keep his large audience.

Seth Meyers, who comes on right after Fallon, doesn't pull any punches when it comes to his show. He's outright banned Trump from appearing (not that he would).

For anyone claiming "he's a talk show host!" go watch videos of Trump appearing on Letterman years before going completely off the wall. Letterman would ridicule him to his face and call him out constantly.

Get over it.

Getting mad at a goofball comedian for not doing a job outside his job description because the major media aren't doing their actual job most of the time.

does it regularly have fascists and white supremacists on as guests? i thought it was just celebrities selling their latest whatever.

Yeah seriously. The problem with people treating Trump like any ol' political guest is that he isn't. He is a white supremacy leader who willfully appeals to that group.

If you can only do vacuous, light-hearted interviews, you probably shouldn't invite a guy like Trump to be a guest. I mean, you CAN, but be prepared to eat some shit from people who have a modicum of integrity.

In his prime, Letterman would have eviscerated Trump AND been funny.
