Welcome to the Jungle
1 CommentsThis is only part of PSW's exclusive Just Cause 2 preview. For the full article more screenshots grab issue 103 of PSW, in shops from January 3.

While Grand Theft Auto appears to be driving down a street marked 'realistic' and with it ditching much of the playfulness of the series, other games are stretching the 'sandbox' template. GTA has gangs, the urban thing is safe.

But while hoodies and hooligans are welcomed with open arms to Liberty City, other developers and trying new things with the open world formula. Prototype is going all Heroes on
the formula, Brutal Legend is just plain weird and now Just Cause 2 adds spies and acrobatics to the army of games knocking on GTA's door.

The original Just Cause offered an original take on the open world idea, here was a tropical island free to explore. It packed in 200 side missions and a solid enough central plot, but most importantly added the freedom to take to the skies.

A unique grapple-hook-parachute gizmo enabled your hero Rico Rodriguez to cling onto passing jeeps and even planes before being whipped off into the sky. It was exhilarating. It was tremendous fun. It certainly wasn't 'real'.

Thankfully the sequel is going to be bigger, broader and crazier. There's no sign of Eidos tethering Rico to anything as boring as realism. If anything, the added zap of PS3 power behind the game has enabled developer Avalanche to push its ideas further still.

"We identified the key areas we wanted to improve for Just Cause 2. We wanted to make better use of our huge game world, enhance the stunts, improve the combat and reward exploration more." Commented Lead Designer Peter Johansson. "We feel we have been successful at that and created a true sequel."

Using the developer's new Avalanche Engine 2.0 means that many more things are possible in Just Cause 2. Firstly the old island is out, as you'd expect. In its place is the island of Panau, a tropical paradise in South East Asia ruled over by the ruthless dictator Baby Panay.

Rico's job is to infiltrate and destabilise the island and return with his former CO, Tom Sheldon, who has gone AWOL on the island and fallen in with Panay.

The story is pretty loose, though it's likely littered with a few twists to keep the writers in tequila until Just Cause 3 comes round. But it's the island and the game's structure that holds the real surprises. Sitting above the familiar jungle canopy is a range of mountains covered in snow and ripe for playing around on.

Just Cause 2 is being designed with more scope for exploration and experimentation than the past game. It's a bustling, burgeoning place that ideally will make even more use of the grapple-parachute mechanic.

No side missions
"We've ditched the concept of side-missions," says Johansson confidently. That's right, the classic structure of any sandbox game - and we're looking at you GTA - is to offer a straight story arc that's surrounded by side-missions to complete at your leisure.

Freedom is something of a myth - again GTA we're looking at you. In Just Cause 2 freedom should be more of a reality. The side-missions are out. You'll begin the game with nothing but your Cuban heels and a winning smile.

Everything you get in the game will need to be earned. It's a rags-to-riches journey.

I know all CVG publications are crap but journos are still touting "the power of the cell"?

That casino screenshot and south-east asia comment makes the map will be based on Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The original game was developed for PS2/Xbox and then ported up to 360, and I think that this preview is specifically for the PS3 but doesn't mean it isn't also for 360.

Nice bullshots though.

They're never going to pick a face for Rico and stick with it, are they? Poor guy.

I still need to play the first one.
You really don't. Just watch a few video clips of some 'chute stunts and some pretty weather effects and you will have had the best of the JC experience.

I don't remember the first one making many waves. I got my fill from the XBL demo and decided that I didn't care for it. The sequel that no one asked for?

The first game was lacking in the "art" and "style" department, this one looks much better IMO. I just hope they changed the controls, it felt crappy on foot.

aside from that artwork, i doubt the other screens are particularly over the top bullshots. some AA and AF added perhaps, but the others look very realistic, espescially when you compare them to the last just cause which looked really good at times, and was just a port up.

that looks fucking awesome

sandbox games like this, Assassins Creed, Crackdown, infamous and Prototype are starting to make exploring the city in GTA4 on foot look very boring indeed

I had a quiet dream... I saw Crackdown 2 in these shots, for a brief moment.

Can it be? Don't be too story-centered, and please add a CO-OP element!

Comics, serious business!
I think what they're saying is that they're no longer behind held back by last gen hardware. Recall that Just Cause was released on last gen consoles and ported up to the 360.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
I loved this game because you could do some crazy crap with vehicles, boats and planes. Also jumping out of a plane and free falling was just awesome, the game had good scope but was pretty boring story wise.

Pick it up cheap and wack on some cheats and go nuts.

Bullshots. and even if it is a PS3 exclusive 360 owners won't be missing much. The first one was very mediocre imo.

Was never planned as an exclusive, but it did start life with Eidos in the pre-SCi days...

Maybe this is going to be PS3 after all? Sony must be hankering hard for some more exclusives, especially ones that will look so tempting on the shelf (like JC1, gorgeous to look at, great on paper, but just a bit... pffft) And now they've bought Eidos, well... that's some scope there.

WHOA FUCKING WHOA

Looks good.

Nice scale but :lol at the copy-paste trees and terrain texture in some shots.

Hitler will be pleased he loved the first one.
The original game was no Crysis, but it still holds up pretty well. The island is MUCH larger than anything in Crysis (the single world you explore is larger than every Crysis map combined and then some) and it looks incredible in motion while flying around. Now, if you stop and look closely at the scenery, things becomes a bit less impressive, but the game still has some of the best skies I've ever seen in a game. Incredible volumetric clouds too.

Also, for some reason, the PC version looked worse than the 360 version.

Hell yes. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

I was actually more of a fan of the engine than I was of the game itself. Tons of potential. They just need to flesh out the gameplay more and it could be a real solid title. No more repetitive takeover missions....please.

I, for one, can't f*cking wait. Loved the first one and this looks like a sizable improvement from the first visually (for obvious reasons).

Little dubious about the no sidemissions claim. Seems like a fluff comment given that it's still clearly an open world game where there's probably any number of things you can do that don't directly factor into the main storyline.
