K-Pop Fanboy/Fangirl |OT7| A Great Trash Leader as Always

In the 3 or 4 years that I have been doing these lists, this has to be, by far, the most difficult one. So many good quality tracks. I split them in categories to simplify things and give some intrigue to the actual ranking for the end of the year list.

Awesome list. Yea it's really hard to make one. There's been a lot of good stuff this year already.

This is my 2017 top 11!... In no particular order. Mostly based on what I listened to the most and what got stuck in my head. Not much surprises in my choices I bet.
... Despite the hype here I still haven't listened to Loona yet.

AOA - Excuse Me (jan 1st lol)
Dia - Will you go out with me
Snuper - Back:Hug
Taeyeon- Make me love you
EXID - Night rather than day
Laboum - Hwi Hwi
Lovelyz - Now, We
Ace - Cactus
Dreamcatcher - Chase Me
Teen Top - Love is
KARD - Don't recall

^I was debating if Laboum's HwiHwi deserves to be on my list and tbh, I think it does actually but... it's a great song when you hear it, but it's not something I was seeking out for after my hype for the track was over.

Anyway, now that I'm thinking about it, here's my honorable mentions... and who knows, they could end up being on my list at the end of the year.

*Kim Na-young - Being An Adult
Suran - Walking
Sam Kim x Loco - Think About Chu
ViVi(LOONA) - Everyday I Love You
*Sik-K - party(Shut Down) ft. Crush
Sanchez x Beenzino - 5 More Minutes
Mad Clown x Suran - Love Is A Dog From Hell
Ailee - Reminiscing
*John Park - DND(Do Not Disturb)

The ones in an asterisk should definitely be in my list actually but they've sorta fallen off my radar after the initial hype(like HwiHwi) and only becomes interesting again once I come across it.

Damn I thought she just winked at me... almost died from a heart attack right there.

LMAO.

As much as I hate fanboys in general, that guy is fucking awesome.

Woah, I thought I was the only one in all of K-Pop GAF who's crazy enough to consider this as a top 10 song since this seems like it never went on anyone's radar. I mean it's only got 280k views on YT 5 months later... it's seriously underrated imo(and I'd love to be wrong about this).

Chungha - 초련 (Power) @ Immortal Songs 2 [20170701]
You can count on Chungha delivering spectacle like a industry veteran.

One of the greatest things about Chungha's performance, imo at least, are her backup dancers. They're probably the best backup dancers I've seen... ever. Not only can they actually keep up with Chungha, but also they seem to really enjoy themselves performing with her... and that's something that I can't really say for a majority of the performances I've seen. Maybe it's an agency thing, telling their backups to not look happy or whatever(just to keep the attention on the main act) but whatever it is, I'm glad Chungha's doing it instead.

I've actually seen most if not all of Chungha's music show appearances just coz it's super fun to watch... whereas I've only seen one performance of BlackPink's new song for example.

Half-year list, man this one is tough. I'll shorten it at 15 cause otherwise I'll end up putting a whole bunch of tracks.

In no particular order by the way.

Taeyeon - I Got Love
GD - Untitled, 2014
Suzy - Pretending to be Happy
Red Velvet - Body Talk
CLC - Liar
Kim Yuna - Voice
Girl's Day - Love Again
Dreamcatcher - Lullaby
EXID - Boy
KARD - Don't Recall/Rumor
IU - Dear Name
Kim Chungha - Why Don't You Know
Ailee - I will go to you like the first snow
Kim Lip - Eclipse
Jin Soul - Singing in the rain

Loads of solo artists in there.

^^^ Cool list. I was also surprised of how many solo releases I enjoyed this year. I guess is a consecuence of all these big groups falling apart.

Not gonna make a list right now, but Red Velvet - Body Talk is probably the best song of the first half of 2017.
If I included B-sides, I would had definitely included this.

Here's a subbed version of the whole thing, as well as the first encounter the guy had with RV

"CRAZY" FANBOY SHOUTING TO ALL HIS FAV IN K POP [FANDOM GOALS]
Ah, it's a shame this video is missing his
April saga,
with bonus Elris in the last one, featuring a new iteration of dumb hearts with the fingers, which I will call double dumb finger hearts.

Edut:BTW, it's July already, unleash LOONA's new member (green?) and the LOONA 1/4 subunit, juseyo.

Such a legendary gif. It was thanks to that and Gee that I first became aware of K-pop, but it was Hello Baby that really sealed the deal.

I'll be so disappointed if SM phones it in but I'm kind of expecting them to to do exactly that.

If SuJu anniversary is the standard (I don't even remember if anything was done), yes, SM will phone it. It will be probably the last true soshi comeback but SM approach seems to be business as usual and a short period of promotions is expected. At least the minimum should include also some korean concert at a big venue until the end of the year.
Of course we don't know how much the members want to push it (the hints are positive) but if depends on SM solely I don't expect too much, sadly.
Do you think SM will debut a new girl group next year? I mean, f(x) are mostly dead leaving RV the only truly active girl group.

First K-pop I remember surely must be BoA, it had a "funny" name (no clue about Korean names back then) and news were about Japanese success. I also remember some music shows in Arirang but I didn't truly follow the music scene. It looked funny when SuJu were around, "laughing" at the group number of members. I also remember the time Wonder Girls debuted and also SNSD, I just thought something like "good luck to them", they were cute and looked nice, and had 9 members (!), and without knowing much more of the music scene I hoped that they would thrive.
I also remember Big Bang Lies, I liked that song. Anyway I just got truly into k-pop in 2009, when I missed Gee comeback by a hair. I watched from time to time some subbed variety and also was into Kara . I stumbled into the We Got Married with Taeyeon and from there I rediscovered SNSD just in time for Genie hype and comeback. Bias was then Tiffany.

Keep posting lists, besides some SNSD activities I am not following much nowadays and I only read news from time to time.

luso, both you and josecito need to come back on track for the August comeback.

And yeah, I feel like SM should have in the works a girl group debut for either this year or early next year.

I'm expecting a group with more mainstream appeal this time around. I hope they actually try to build up some hype and promo push unlike what they did with Red Velvet.

Nowadays looks like a pre-debut show like IOI and Twice it's needed to sky rocket the debut popularity, something that only major agencies can afford it. YG has a different approach, with BlackPink not needing any show as build up has being going on by years. Will SM use this formula?

Greetings. I've casually followed the thread for a while, but never posted. Figured I'd stop in to answer the question below and post my half-year list.

Probably been discussed before but now that you mention what was it that got you all into kpop?

A random GIF thread in OT ~2 years ago. Someone posted the toothpaste GIF from 4Minute's Heart to Heart video, with the youtube link following shortly after. I wasn't immediately into it, but for whatever reason, I started journeying through the related videos. Time started to melt away, and before I realized any of it, I was hooked. Red Velvet was the first group to that I really got into. I remember playing The Red on repeat for days to help pass the time sparrow racing for infusion gear in Destiny.

2017 First-half list (alphabetical, not order of preference)

Dreamcatcher - Chase Me
Dreamcatcher - Good Night
EXID - Night Rather Than Day
G-Dragon - Untitled, 2014
gugudan - A Girl Like Me
IU - Palette
Laboum - Hwi Hwi
Lovelyz - Cameo
Lovelyz - Now, We
Mamamoo - Yes I Am
Oh My Girl - Perfect Day
Red Velvet - Body Talk
Stellar - Archangels of the Sephiroth
Subin - Strawberry
Taeyeon - Cover Up
Taeyeon - Fine
Twice - Someone Like Me
WJSN - Happy
Yezi - Anck Su Namum
Zion.T - The Song

Still a lot of stuff I haven't checked out yet (LOONA project for example).

I never left, Kpop overall is quite meh these days, seeing legendary groups that got me into kpop in the first place is not helping keeping me interested, only a handful of groups and some random visual here and there. It's amazing how much has happened in almost 9 years i've been following this industry.

I'm always up to date with SNSD and general news, i'm surprised nobody posted about what Sunny did a couple of days ago, she organized a fan meet with the people from Soshified.

I'll do a track list of what i liked so far this year, sadly the latest release from Black Pink is not one of them, i'm quite salty about it, wtf YG.

My experience has been pretty messy so bear with me, lol.

Lets see... I was listening to some of Kesha's tracks on YT from her first album and then I got into some of the demos she recorded which included Run Devil Run. I read the comments from that vid that mentioned there was a Korean version of that song sung by a group called SNSD and decided to check it out. I was also kinda into 2NE1 when I Am The Best came out but didn't stick around >.<

That's how I became aware of K-Pop but I didn't become a fan of/followed it until Red Velvet's ICC came out in 2015.

Heh, I'm mostly joking about lag. My FX-8320 still runs like a champ even though I'm planning to switch a Ryzen 1600 at the end of July. Also fuck those bitcoin miners... I want to buy a 6GB GTX 1060 right now but I can't even find one nor am I willing to pay $500 for what was $230 2 months ago. That's some bullshit imo.

But I digress...
Heh, I tried to tell you about Zen/Ryzen last year...

I do agree about Eclipse being more in the pocket and yeah, one of the reasons why I love it is it's similarity to the current Ladies Code sound but at same time, Singing In the Rain is just fire and just super fun to listen to.
Oh, "Singing in the Rain" is good no doubt. I have to agree that "Eclipse" seems like it will be more enjoyable for a longer period of time in part due to its vibe-y-ness.

BTW, LC "Gravity" had a decent reception here, but I think nearly all the love for "The Rain" comes from the two of us. Shame, the song and video are great, plus their stages during promos were nice.

I'm going to need a dance version (or a really good fancam from the next Smtown concert).

^^^^ Yeah, I went into it after seeing that new song. What an odd pairing, I guess they are under the same company?

Anyway, so I just read that this predebut Loona thing won't be 12 months long but 18? They still will be 12 members, but I guess that explains the gap they had in February and March.

Presumably they will have a similar gap between October and January where ther shouldn't be new debuted girls since there are already members for those months. That's going to be a long ass break, maybe they take advantage to promote more subunits or have 2nd releases for some of the members.

Since February and March are vacant, I guess those will be the last 2 members? What if they go all survival show for to decide those two members during that 4 month break?

In any case, it's a bummer they aren't going to debut this year, it's a bit too much.

Do you think SM will debut a new girl group next year? I mean, f(x) are mostly dead leaving RV the only truly active girl group.

I expect a debut in 2018. Lami which SM seems to have high hopes for (as a visual) is only 13 I believe.

The Rain > Galaxy

I think Galaxy was more discussed because of the context of the release. For me Galaxy is too depressing and somber.

They started with Rumor, then sang the hidden version of Don't Recall. Holy shit people were singing loudly the songs, it was a very powerful energy!!! Brazilans know how to have fun :DD
After that they picked some fans from the audience and brought them to the stage to make them dance parts of Don't Recall; the people who won got to take a selfie with them :33 (I wasn't picked)

They danced to two brazilian songs (Ragatanga and Sim ou Não), which was very much in line with their own choreography; that was a nice touch for us.
As for foreign songs, they sang Versace on the Floor, Right Now, Monster, and I Can't Stop.

They did some other games but I couldn't figure out what was the objectives, lol. Probably a korean game.

Before saying goodbye, they finally sang Oh NaNa, and the normal version of Don't Recall.
They were super super sweet, and took their time to learn our culture, local artists, cuisine, clothes and some slightly butchered Portuguese words. I was really happy to have them as my first kpop show.

Not gonna make a list right now, but Red Velvet - Body Talk is probably the best song of the first half of 2017.

I dunno about second best but this IMO is Red Velvet's Airplane or The Great Escape.

I mean Cool World is also deserving of that "title" but I think Body Talk is the better song vs CW.

Mad Clown is a solid rapper and imo he is pretty underrated. His voice works well with many styles and going through his catalogue he has some pretty great duets and songs.

I agree.

His flow isn't necessary unique or groundbreaking, but he owns it every time and his voice sounds really good with it. But the biggest reason I like the dude is his lyrics, again they're not unique or groundbreaking, but they're meaningful and and relate able(obviously after translating lol).

Mad Clown reminds me a lot of Gary/Leessang actually, his flow has a similar vibe, albeit MC has a smoother voice compared to Gary's rough and punchy vocals. Lyrically, they're pretty similar too so I think that's why I really like his stuff.

Does Jiwoo have some ink or something? She's always in long sleeves

Asking the right questions lol.

Would be awesome if she does and tbh, I wouldn't be surprised... judging by how she never takes shit from BM or Jseph lol.

Also yeah after a week, SitR is still a great song, but Eclipse is starting to fight back hard. Gonna give it another week and see how far both can go lol.

Finally, yep agree that The Rain is the better song. Galaxy was too somber and depressing like llehuty mentions, whereas the The Rain is a lot more upbeat and isn't so much of a mood killer.

Yeah they're promoting a subunit during the breaks. Supposedly July girl is the last member of 2/3's or whatever they're going to call the subunit Kim Lip and JinSoul are part of. And I wouldn't be surprised if they add another member with the subunit like they did with ViVi.

If they did a survival show, idk if it'd work since there are already existing members. It could ruin the chemistry as the current girls seem to be close to each other.

Anyway, I agree that it sucks they aren't debuting until 2018 as a whole group but as long as we get monthly releases and subunits, I think it's fine. And IIRC the subunits count as debuts I believe... they went on music shows and all that so that counts as a proper debut right?

Consider me on the WJSN train.
In the first vid who is the one with the brown hair and bangs? She steals my attention. The blonde with the choker (Eunseo?) has her moments as well. From a different video of this performance Seola seems the most controlled with dancing but conveys less feeling. Hard to find out which members it is on phone.

Edit: lol 3 of them did a terrible cover of Coming of Age Ceremony.

I believe the one with brown hair and bangs (and a choker right?) is Dawon. Main vocal who participated in that singing show with Sojung, Boa, Seunghee, etc.. I believe the blonde one with the choker is Exy, Eunseo is the other blonde sans choker .

Don't see what the fuss is about Bona. She has a nice body, but her face is super plain. If you told me she was 40 and just had a shitload of plastic surgery, I'd believe you.

Aside from the obvious choice of Cheng Xiao, I'm most intrigued by Zlatan-lookalike-Eunseo. Also, there's a member that reminds me of prime Lizzy. Yeo-something (not nJung). But yeah, WJSN is definitely a group to watch. Pretty stacked with talent and visuals. If Starship could give them more songs like Secret, that would be swell.

Did anyone else finish watching the trainwreck that was Idol Drama Operation Team? The earlier "making of" episodes weren't bad, but the actual drama itself is one of the worst pieces of entertainment I've had the misfortune of watching. The writing and directing decisions were just awful.

At least we got "Deep Blue Eyes" out of the deal. Great song with equally great choreography.

I mean the one who is on the left at the end, definitely brown hair, not too dark. If that is Dawon, she's got the feeling. As for the blonde, I guess I do mean Eunseo. In IDing her I was going by another vid which was apparently them doing this bit somewhere else because she has a choker there but I didn't check back to this one to see she doesn't here.

Edit: Trying to figure out who is who in this one I am remembering why I just stuck with the media focus and liked Cheng Xiao. Too many members to discover/find something with them/keep track of! That said, I did randomly come across this video of one named Subin who is just too cute. Though looking around that vid it seems their visuals are pretty strong overall.

So, Block Berry Creative expect us to wait an additional ~6 months or so?

Unless they execute this protracted pre-debut period extremely well, they could face backlash or diminished interest from fans. Of course, if done well they'll have a large fan base and multiple capable subunits ready from their official "day 1."

[Special Clip] Dreamcatcher(드림캐쳐) 'Lullaby'
Happyface are knocking it out of the park with the quality Dramcatcher side content they are delivering.

I'm going to need a dance version (or a really good fancam from the next Smtown concert).

One of the more budget kpop groups I've ever seen. But there is hope if VAV managed to go from this to their latest MV:
VAV - ABC(Middle of the Night)

That dancer is the next thing in kpop, or what?

공민지(Minzy) - Minzy X Marquese Scott "Ninano" full ver.

And that Apink drunk clip is GLORIOUS.
Heh, his style would have fit with JinSoul's "Singing in the Rain."

And yeah lush Apink is more interesting than their actual release.

By Gravity I assume you mean Galaxy. Anyway, not sure if I ever spoke out about it, but The Rain is my favorite LC song. Not a big fan of galaxy.
Yup. Must be the second time I've done that. At least I caught myself the other time. Not sure why I have "Gravity" on the mind.

Dunno, "Galaxy" is definitely moody and somber, though I don't find it as depressing as some of you.

"The Rain" is the better song, which is nice since it feels more balanced vocally.

SO, the K.A.R.D show

[...]
I need to see K.A.R.D at some point before DSP ruins them. Along with Dreamcatcher I prolly want to see those two acts more than, say, Red Velvet and Blackpink; which says a lot.

Brunette with bangs in the first video is Dawon. She's either tied for best singer, or at worst she's #2 vocal. About as shy as Exy and she's doesn't often show a great deal of personality. Plus she's not as naturally/surgically pretty as some of the others which does factor into her popularity with female and male fans, young and old.

Her vocals and choreo are generally on point.Yeonjung's addition to the group affected Seola's role the most, with Dawon to a lesser degree. Her small group of fansites seem fairly dedicated.

Yup, Dawon and Eunseo.

Here's my list. Looking back, I listened to way way more solo releases compared to the previous semester, each one doing its own thing, which is great!
And wrt groups, it's mainly been Dreamcatcher and K.A.R.D, hah. I wish there were more, but most groups have not grabbed my attention.

There were some great solo (+ guests) releases in 2017

High expectation, disappointment

Low expectation, big surprise

I listened to these group jams over 50 times each, they're great

You're a great B-side

This MV was super weird, remember?

---

Now I feel I caught up, and can start reading the thread normally.

---

Nice impressions Bowlie, sounds like a blast.

And wow at this, both Somin and Jiwoo not holding back at all! I'm kind of enjoying this kpop group with international focus.

Yeah, seeing that up close was... something. You could hear the screams in that video :D

---

Woah, I thought I was the only one in all of K-Pop GAF who's crazy enough to consider this as a top 10 song since this seems like it never went on anyone's radar. I mean it's only got 280k views on YT 5 months later... it's seriously underrated imo(and I'd love to be wrong about this).

You aren't alone! I streamed that song for the entire week it came out, and often listen to it. I really, really like it!

This is good, but I think IU did better the "I'm doing my own thing now", but this probably comes from a more sincere place. Still a really chill song with a stunning MV.

Edit: 170704 Red Velvet (레드벨벳) - Comeback Next Week @ 더쇼 The Show
People already did some work and somehow found out it sounds like this song.

Wether SM bought this song and Red Velvet rerecorded it or The show decided to get creative with their teaser songs, we'll have to see. I could see this being a Red Velvet song, with the quirky beat and everything.

Legit surprised that Hyori is not destroying the charts. It has been around #20 melon since release, was there no promo or what?

Pre-release track Seoul had some time on the Melon top 5/ 10. Lead single is probably not the right sound for mainstream appeal.

I guess Purple is the next girl color.
Not sure I can handle the subunit that will result of these girls.

Looks badass, but the colour choice is weird. After Red and Blue they should have gone with Green to have the RBG subunit, but we get Purple instead, which is Red + Blue?, weird (but par for the course). In other Loona news, we should be getting 21db rain and Singing in the rain with Heejin, after they have hit the MV views goals.
