How racist.

It really only is GG related (at least directly) for like a minute at most of a 16 minute video.

Of course that won't stop GG from freaking out and dominating the comments section of the video like they already have. Almost like the types of angry troglodytes he talks about for the rest of the video might be the same audience.

It's already the worst rated video on Last Week Tonight's channel and they are routinely talking about much more divisive political topics. This is so fucking ridiculous.

I find it really amusing that on my work internet connection (proxy through GB) it's not available, but on my regular internet connection (Romania) it is.
What's up with the restrictions?

5 seconds snippet about Anita Sarkeesian = 50 billions enraged comments about that specific part only.

Lol, people get the head out of your ass.

The thread's in Off Topic to reflect the fact that it only briefly touches on gaming, Gator's reactions aside.

2015 and still getting rick rolled. It never fails to make me chuckle.

But jesus christ, how pathetic are some of these people. So much salt over less than a minute's worth of video.

Okay, those comments are just.... evil. Pure fucking evil.

"Bomb threats against Anita" ->

BUT SHE IS A PROFESSIONAL VICTIM, GUYS! AND SHE SAYS VIDEO GAMES MAKES US SEXIST! SHE HAD IT COMING!

Jesus fucking christ. Jesus.

Last Week Tonight is broadcasted on Wednesdays by Sky Atlantic here in UK. That's why.

My only criticism of this video is how it (as with almost all news coverage on this issue) portrays online harassment as being purely a women's issue (and males being the default offenders), when it is my opinion that, much like with the subjects of rape and domestic abuse, it is a people's issue, and that the subject should be spoken off regardless of gender, race, sexuality or religion. Things like these shouldn't become some sort of competition between the sexes in order to see "who has it worse" but rather be open to anyone who has had those terrible experiences so they can be heard and get help.

Everything else is pretty much on point.

Youtube comments are even worse than Twitch chat because people actually take the time to dump their opinion in them using more than five words.

While you are right that everyone should be treated equal, the harassment online is mostly targeted towards women. As in 97% of the harassment is targeted towards them. So it is clear that their trouble needs extra attention and a solution.

This is GG's self-employed job, going over to any mention of gamergate and sounding the alarm to bring in their cronies.

The mental gymnastics is insane too. Everyone in the comments is pretty much saying "we're not the bad guys, they are"

The video game harassment segment is really just a jumping off point for the actual topic, revenge porn. He doesn't even mention GamerGate, he's speaking about the detestable, radical trolls who have taken up harassment.

I love John Oliver, he's proven to be even funnier then Jon Stewart (granted he isn't being held down by basic cable standards). I recommend everyone to watch all his videos on his YouTube channel, they are all both informative and humorous.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
John Oliver stays killin it, good to see him address the goobers.

Not surprised to see the comments thread, lord knows there are probably a few neckbeards lurking over this very thread shakin their jowls angrily.

Just starting, this is definitely a video about online harassment because it has nearly half the number of dislikes as likes despite being posted yesterday :/

I liked that this tackled the legal barriers, because that's where the potential for change lies. We just need to change the idea that online activity is ignorable and not dangerous.

A death threat is a death threat, at the end of the day. If the law isn't working to its fullest to shut these down, what good is it.

shame it wasn't actually about GG

harassment laws really need to be strengthen

The mainstream media doesn't care about video games. They are 1 to 2 generations older then the people who take video games seriously. They will latch on to a harassment story, but video game culture at large? Not important to them.

Why would it just be about GG?
(to guess at his motivation)
Because there is enough material there alone and obviously as a gaming focused forum we have been more aware of that specific large branch of harassment.

That is not to minimise the importance of other forms of harassment, just that is a lot to potentially unpack there.

(again this is a gaming forum, hence the instinctual desire to see more on that bit)

He doesn't even mention GG at all, which makes it even more obvious they know they harass people.

Gamergate is one of those things in life that I'll never understand. Not that I want to, everything about it sounds pretty horrible.

The video explicitly shows a statistic that women receive 96+% of the online harassment, why wouldn't they depict it as an issue that women have to primarily deal with?

John Oliver did some pretty cool shorts on Australian politics and why Abbot's a prick, so he's a-okay in my book... Even if I'm not sure when if at all he's on over here, so I mostly have to go off online snippets.

Can't even see the video or comments over here when its on the official youtube channel. Dumb and blatant as hell for GG/KiA to dislike bomb the thing if he doesn't even mention GamerGate.
