It seems like even in the handheld space japanese developers cannot afford to make exclusives anymore and particularly they can't ignore the iOS/Android userbase.
Which imo is bad thing if it compromises the quality (controls being a serious issue) of the games.

edit: I mentioned this in some other thread but Siliconera reports that it's 6.5m total, putting Western sales at about 2m for IE1 and 2.
