Level5 Vision 2013 - Vision of a social mobile f2p future [OP updated, RIP duckroll]

Looks like the only JP devs making games for home consoles anymore are Idea Factory and NIS.

Time for the JP console scene to die. The dawn of f2p mobage are upon us.

No wonder why Sony and MS aren't in a hurry to release their consoles in Japan.

Going mobile makes a lot of sense for Layton, even if it means losing the Nintendo partnership in the west (I'm convinced that it was absolutely vital for the success in Europe/US). However, the screens make a bad impression and I'm inclined to think that Layton 7 will just continue the franchise's downward spiral.

Also, it looks like the 3DS lost one of its bigger supporters. Considering we don't know Atlus's future approach either, the 3DS might become kind of a Nintendo-only device in the next years.

It shouldn't surprise you when you see the Inazuma Eleven sales numbers. I honestly have no idea how they managed to sell 6.5 million copies in Europe with just 2 games when compared to Japan that has sold 9 games so far.

I'm as suspicious as you are but that's what it said in the slideshow. 6.5 million for Japan, 6.5 million for Europe.

holy shit? I wonder how IE3 will do

edit: I mentioned this in some other thread but Siliconera reports that it's 6.5m total, putting Western sales at about 2m for IE1 and 2.

...But they're still releasing lots of 3DS titles, the heck are you talking about?

Announcements
- Wonder Flick is a f2p RPG with character creation/customization and full 3D battles. Service on iOS/Android starts in Nov 2013, PS3/PS4/XB1/WiiU service is due to start sometime in 2014.

- Layton 7 is a brand new direction for the Layton IP. It's a Role Playing Puzzle game, where you can apparently "role play" as different characters in a miniature 3D town of some sort. Looks weird and stupid. Coming for iOS/Android/3DS at some point.

- Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy hits the 3DS in two different flavors in Winter 2013.

- The Guild series has sold over 400k units on the eShop so far, half of which are from overseas buyers.

I'm not interested in mobile game, so I'm disappointed, especially considering how good were their games (to me) on DS and how good are on 3DS.
Layton 7 seems really cheap, hopefully will be an eshop game on 3DS.
Wonderflick seems visaully good, but I doubt we'll see it in the west.
IE Go series still have to arrive in Europe, but in the meantime we'll get the third episode enanched for 3DS. I hope they'll continue localizing them (the first 2 games sold well over here)
Hopefully Guild series will continue on the eshop, looking at those good sales figures also in the West.

Where's the great developer? Lol.
Wow, really? Can't believe the lack of love... I can't speak much for layton or Inazuma Eleven because i don't play them, but Ni No Kuni and DQ IX are definitely great. the upcoming fantasy life and Yōkai Watch both look really fun too, so they're not out of the game just yet.

Ok, I doubt many are interested but sales for Layton and Inazuma Eleven:

Professor Layton series has sold 15 million units worldwide.

Including Layton vs Ace Attorney and assuming 250k sales for Layton 6, that's somewhere around 4.3m for Japan so it should have sold over 10m units for the 5 entries released in the West.

Inazuma Eleven series has sold 6.5 million units worldwide.

Japanese sales are at 4.378 million, leaving about 2 million for Inazuma Eleven, two versions of Inazuma Eleven 2 and Inazuma Eleven Strikers for Wii.

I feel it's worth noting all the platforms in question support free 2 play.

Yeah, I realized that a bit later when I was reading the Media-Create thread and someone mentioned it.

I hope you enjoy a big show of soon-to-be-released f2P GREE games and mobages.

I'm still hoping there will be something else fun to look forward to when I arrive at TGS this year. That is, of course, apart from playing Lightning Returns and obtaining about 80 bajillion StreetPasses.

Of course I'm hoping for TGS to throw up a surprise or two, but damn it looks like the writing on the wall for traditional games out of Japan.

The better news is that GREE and mobage are doing worse and worse over the years of using the same formula of crap. May be they will stop doing that soon enough.

Other Japanese publishers noticed too. That's why they're trying to come together to from a super alliance to push their own social/mobile games without having to publish through GREE. The solution to GREE being weakened is not that they will stop, they will just find other ways to push it harder.

I know it's the second time I'm asking for this, but have other announces been made apart from those that are visible in the OP?

Also, has the conference ended? :p

Thanks for your patience to anyone who replies :p

DQIX is good(not great) because of Yuji Horii and his team, not Level 5. I'd actually rate it as one of the weakest DQ games of recent times - its scenario is well below par considering his previous work - but the success or failure of it is down to Yuji Horii, (their previous DQ collaboration, DQVIII is one of the best DQ games).

Ni No Kuni is an average game. It looks fantastic(pretty much all L5 games do - well at least before Layton 7...), but the gameplay is pretty simplistic and the story falls off a cliff when it comes to the PS3 exclusive content.

Inazuma Eleven Online for PC

Yes

You're welcome

Unfortunate, but probably true. Wonder how stubborn Japanese pubs will be if/when they struggle with this social/mobile agenda.

I'm not surprised to be honest. Those decisions seem pretty smart to me, considering mobile gaming is pretty big in Japan. I'm not happy with this, but well...

This is actually good news. Although the debbie downer in me just sees another GREE-like portal for social games to rear it's ugly head in the future and off we go again.

I am okay with a mobile future...... But only if it doesn't end up with the death of Japanese console/handheld games as we know them. :(

I did never reckon Level 5 as a great game maker (not my cup of tea. The only game I loved is Crimson Shroud which wasn't really a L5 game).
But after seeing this, I'm starting to think they used to make good games in comparison.
It's really sad...

Cant even blame these jrpg developers. Unless you have FF or DQ attached to your games name expect low to terrible sales. Look at Nii No Kuni.

Meh its only Level 5. Could not care less about 99% of their franchises. The only one I did care about is Dark Cloud. Hopefully their PS4 game is more like DC than WKC. Tis a shame such talent is going to the mobile industry but it was inevitable.

This is why when people say Nintendo should go third-party and release games on mobile I just shake my head in disgust. This isn't the future of gaming that I wanted.

Any chance of the new layton be like London Life ?
At least the 3ds version ?

It is like the only chance of survival for this game =x
