IIRC, they used numbers and demographic information of the players but just not the names. Players sued because the likeness was too much like themselves and they weren't reimbursed.

The hang up is that they would use the obvious likenesses and attributes of players w/o compensating them. That series can stay dead and hopefully the NCAA follows it.
