AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

COORDINATES - 9.9 NORTH 85.5 WEST
DEPTH - 46 KM
LOCATION - OFF COAST OF COSTA RICA
MAGNITUDE - 7.9

EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES AND MORE
DISTANT COASTLINES WITHIN HOURS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER
WILL MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA FROM GAUGES NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE TO
DETERMINE IF A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED AND ESTIMATE THE SEVERITY OF
THE THREAT.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE

The "Did you feel it" ratings on USGS aren't showing anything TOO terrible, highest I could find is a VII which indicates moderate damage, but most showed V, which indicates very light damage.

Heed the tsunami warnings though people.

One of the call centers I help manage has been evacuated. Mainly for precaution, but reports indicate minimal damage.

Hope everyone down there is safe.

Costa Rica GAF reporting here!

Everything seems cool, pretty long and strong quake.

So far there aren't reports of any casualties.
There is a report of an old church tower that fell, but no people injured.

A shallow quake is bad as it means the energy from the quake is much more violent. It could cause some liquefaction of the rock at that height making the effects on buildings much worse. Deep = okay shallow = not

Odd coincidence that this earthquake and the one that happened in the Philippines a few days ago are nearly identical in size and Latitude.

That Quake was far far stronger than this one. The Richter scale is logarithmic base 10 scale. Using wikipedia you can see the differance in power
A 7.5 quake is 2.7 megatons power
A 7.9 quake is about 10 -15 megatons

Now the japan quake was 480 megatons, the Sumatra boxing day quake was a whopping 950 megatons and the chile quake in 1960 a staggering 2.7 gigatons

so was the chilean one back in 2010. Lots of friends and acquaintances affected =/

So I hope everybody's fine! Such a big earthquake is no laughing matter.

Regardless, it's scary and no fun..

Most people on Costa Rica is pretty used to quakes.
Structural design is pretty tight here, so most buildings can withstand a strong earthquake.

Still no news of casualties, and just collateral damage has been reported:

Guys I'm still in shock. I had never felt anything like this. I'm sorry, I'm to emotional right now. It lasted so long. It hapened just like at 40-50 kilometers from where I live. I was able to get out my home and mmy house is made of wood. It looked like rubber. I was sure it was going to fall. Many people lost everything. I just got the power back. It was a nightmare.
