Recently we've seen a lot of new announcements from Nintendo and Sony is rumoured to have 11(?)unannounced first party titles in the works for TGS. Is whatever Microsoft has in store enough to grab more mindshare?

It seems more and more like they will have to outdo themselves just to keep up with what the others have to offer. Enticing the customer with a solid library is one way to increase market share but if your competitors also have a growing library then much of what you do is nullified.

If they don't show a lot at TGS I fear they may fall behind rather than vie for second spot.
MS are doing the TGS keynote, so who knows.

TGS keynotes are very rarely used for big announcements anyway.

This is Xbox's first TGS keynote, isn't it? They might have something up their sleeve.

Edit: from Major Nelson's blog:
I am pretty excited to return to Tokyo especially since Xbox will, for the first time, be delivering a keynote at TGS. I am going to do my best to have the complete audio of the keynote available later that day for download. I’ll also try to live blog the event on my Twitter, but that is dependent on my connectivity at the venue. Either way, the keynote is at 12–noon local time on Thursday, October 9th, so expect the news to start flowing following the event.

Does anyone know what the shortage situation is like in Japan currently? Has it been fixed? Or are there still reports? There were a couple of people in here last week talking about how they still didn't get their pre-orders and how some stores were still charging the old price. Is that still the case?

From 960K to 10 million.

Ah, Pokemon.
Wow. I knew the game was really leggy, but I didn't remember that it was such an immediate big hit, too. That's a pretty crazy start for a new series. Looking at that list, the other biggest first week for an original title is 649K for Gran Turismo. Though there are many without the first week available at all.

Only battles I am interested in seeing if NSMB can make it to 6 million and if MK Wii could surpass MK DS. Probably about the only few games I am interested in tracking.

Sure, 5-week-ahead full lineup, medium-sized, at least, releases bolded:
10/09 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
10/16 FaceBreaker
10/16 Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on Tour
10/16 Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on Tour (w/Guitar)
10/23 Gundam Musou International (Platinum Collection)
10/23 NBA Live 09
10/30 Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway
10/30 Fracture
10/30 Grand Theft Auto IV
11/06 Ace Combat 6: Kaihou e no Senka (Platinum Collection)
11/06 Assassin's Creed (Platinum Collection)
11/06 Beautiful Katamari Damacy (Platinum Collection)
11/06 Lost Odyssey (Platinum Collection)
11/06 Project Gotham Racing 4 (Platinum Collection)
Thanks a lot! This is probably a very good time to do rereleases, as they have a bunch of new hardware owners looking for more games. But there's probably not a lot of hardware-driving titles in there. (GTA is popular for a western game, and cheaper Gundam/AC6/LO might tip some folks' hands, but nothing screams big success.) I stick by my prediction of falloff--in one of two configurations--over the next months until Last Remnant.

Noone should ever question the validity of Nintendo's actions, ever. They know what they're doing.

awesome chart Captain Smoker!

(HOLY SHIT @ DS GAMES IN TOP 10 ALL TIME!) :lol

indeed, the chart is awesome and very informative.

What I concluded from the chart:

.- New super mario bros is the most succesful mario game since the original famicom game. we already knew that but it really is amazing to realize it really is that big.

.- Animal crossing, what the fuck happened there? Nr. 8 japanese all-time sales... bizarre.

.- Nintendo owns the complete top 10.... with software from 20 years ago and 3 years ago...

I can't believe people thought nintendo was going bankrupt just because the gamecube flopped.. :lol :lol

HK-47

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
And Platinum and DQ IX are certain to enter that list and get quite far up it. DQ VI also has a good shot as well

I think any cries of bankruptcy were clearly delusional, but surely you could observe the downward trend of Nintendo's business decisions as it relates to gaming as we knew it leading up to the GC-successor?

you surely remember nintendo was often bullied as " the next sega " cause it was going to leave the hardware business due to the downward trend you mention.... but it has always been an statement with no basis whatsoever, complete and utter nonsense.

Nintendo and " good finances" are synonyms.

I do get your point, it was getting scary seeing how nintendo and their home consoles were so "out" and "out of touch"....

FFVI and FFV outsold FFX (The SFC versions no less)?

The series really has declined somewhat in Japan huh...

Those FFX, X-2 and XII numbers are vastly incomplete. There were an international version of FFX, a budget release, a budget international version, a FFX/X-2 Bundle, a budget rerelease. Square shipped 3.02 million and almost sold that many if you count all of those releases.

Agreed on all counts.

Looking at what I've got as most recent for those various FFXs...
Final Fantasy X: 2,323,463
Final Fantasy X International: 240,940
Final Fantasy X (Mega Hits!): 199,429
Final Fantasy X (Ultimate Hits): 179,959
Final Fantasy X/X-2 (Ultimate Hits): 25,784
Final Fantasy X International (ULTIMATE): 47,676

Sum of the above: 3,017,251

Since this is a fairly common thing to come up, and FFX is a pretty special case for as many rereleases it's had (that actually charted), I've tossed them into a group. X-2 and XII as well, though their rereleases are a smaller part of their whole. Looks like XII finally had an Ultimate Hits release in June, but didn't make a Top 30; we'll probably see it in this year's Top 500.

Yeah in terms of games Japan has always been about Nintendo, Square and Enix. Mainly Nintendo. Pretty crazy.

Good to see you back. You've been MIA a couple of days. Just to remind you, I did respond to your last post, on page 5.

Oh that's nice.

1. I guess Blue Dragon week makes that "once," which doesn't really help your case (on the 360 going over 30k past its launch period).

2. In an evolving conversation, one can be expected to reiterate how they come up with ridiculous numbers such as yours. If you can't, or forgot, then link the post here (and you'll probably see why it was ignored the first time).

3. Shortages? "ok."

4. Yeah, I was accidently looking at 06 instead of 05 as the launch period.

5. You have an interesting and optimistic outlook, but your methods have not worked in the past, nor will they work now. Mine have. Good luck with your hopes and guesses.

And finally SCEJ remembered about PS3 hardware situation:
PS3 80GB + Dual Shock 3 (Black/White/Silver) - 39980Y

But for a limited time, its including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III for free. But the game itself will also be available stand-alone. October 30 for this, dunno for the hardware:
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III Blu-Ray - 4980Y
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III Downloadable - 4500Y

Now Little Big Planet gets an official bundle:
PS3 80GB + 2 Dual Shock 3 (Black/White/Silver) + Little Big Planet - 44980Y

Controller bundles with LBP too:
Dual Shock 3 (Black/White/Silver) + Little Big Planet - 7980Y

Super Mario Galaxy sold the status quo.

Super Mario Galaxy is status-quo quality.

Glad I was able to clear up any misconceptions anyone had!

Status quo of what? 3D Mario platformers?

1000Y cheaper on Wii too this year.

But does it actually do anything with the hardware or feature anything beyond what is available in the PS2 version? Price is part of the equation here, but if you're offering the same game on both platforms then I don't see how you're going to see a huge transfer to the new one.

Amusing that T2 is doing the exact opposite with the franchise in the US, but performance is also flipped between the two versions so it makes sense. If I'm not mistaken, Power Pros 2008 was only $20 on PS2 compared to $40 on Wii.
