Lol. Yeah, I know that Nintendo is dominant in a scandalous way on their systems, but I'm curious: how much software of these 100 millions copies comes from Nintendo?

Famitsu data:

DS software total till end of March 08: 97.546.848

Nintendo software [all data we have, not complete, but very comprehensive]: 57.077.567

At most 60.000.000 with the the rest of the numbers we don´t have. ^^

So 3rd Parties managed 37.546.848 - 40.469.281 units on the DS.

For comparison:
PSP: 18.862.857 [till end of March 08, total software units]

Great start for MK Wii, hope it has some loooong legs 'cause the game definitely deserves it!

Wii Fit also hanging in there, nice. :) Wii Fit to catch PS3 LTD = when?

I think Nintendo would be wise to develop a new portable that's strong enough to handle Monster Hunter sequels. I'm sure Iwata wouldn't mind the extra $$$.

So people are more likely to discover a game on a system they didn't care about/own? (at the time MH first became a hit on PSP)

Let's try to picture this. Japanese game buyer goes to store:

"Hey look it's MH for the PSP, isn't that the game I passed up buying on the PS2..hey I know, instead of buying the PS2 version for the system I own, let me buy a new PSP and and the PSP version of it. Cause lawd knows I already own too damn many good games for the PS2 and it would just get lost in the mix of my awesome PS2 collection, and I have this extra 20,000 yen that needs to be spent"

does that sound about right?

Or more like the core MH audience (read hardcore fans), all picked it up on the PSP and discovered it's a game they would rather play on the go.
This theory would work if the original PS2 Monster Hunter titles were still in proper distribution, which they aren't. Getting the game on PSP is a hell of a lot easier, and it's not as though the PSP is an unattractive thing to buy, it's just that the games just haven't been there. But now they have a game to play on their multimedia center.
Not a tough concept, really. You can use every form of convoluted logic available, but the fact remains that we have no basis to say that the franchise is only popular on handhelds when there hasn't been a non-handheld version since the series hit mainstream attention and notoriety.

You're right... we're getting another expansion, if anything.

Thanks. Holy shit. Nintendo has roughly the 60% of the entire software on DS. O_O Crazy.

It's scandalous. All this talk about the vital importance of 3rd parties and Nintendo is simultaneously accounting for what percentage of the handheld and console market on their own at this point, I wonder?

It has to be pretty substantial at any rate.

More than half of the software sold for handhelds and consoles in Japan in 2007 was Nintendo published, IIRC.

The fact is Nintendo is dominating the software landscape in all facets.

You are competing with Nintendo 1st party games whether you publish games on DS and Wii, or PS3 and PSP.

Two or three weeks.

Cheesemeister,

Check last week's thread for the new Media-Create LTDs through 2007. You need to adjust your numbers. PSP's the only big one, but most of the others changed by 1 or 2, as well.

I figured out the differences from my numbers there, but you'd probably want to compare the MC totals to your records to be sure. The hardware totals are from the MC 2007 Top 500 listing at GEIMIN.

Not since the PS3 came out and likely not before, either. This is the 360's lowest week since the PS3 has been out.

Bad hardware for all the consoles.

360 is bad like always.

PS3 is getting pathetic to the point where I won't be surprised if went lower than last year.

Wii is completely underwhelming considering MK launch and sold more than any other MK first week. Selling about half of third week MHPG boosted PSP is pretty pathetic. At this rate the battle for first place in Japan for the year will be without a doubt a handheld.

I think you're losing a bit of perspective..50K a week is still solid.

They seem fairly properly distributed here in Japan, I don't know about where you live.

I guess we can go in circles all day, but if you think it was just chance that it became mega popular on the PSP, and had nothing to do with the handheld aspect, well all I can say is I think you are wrong. I'm sure some of that will spill over to the Wii version for sure though, and they will most likely outsell the PS2 versions by a good margin.

600,000 Mario Kart Wiis could only boost the system a couple thousand.

When's Golden Week?

You should also consider the fact that all other H/W dropped significantly. If there is no Mario Kart Wii, I am sure that Wii H/W will also drop significantly. So, instead of saying only boost 2K, think of it as something like "boosting 12K (2K + 10K drop if there is no Mario Kart Wii released)".

Note that the 10K is just an estimated figure, since there is no way we can know for certain what that # are.

I did expect a higher bump from Mario Kart Wii, but this (very small bump) is understandable (since Mario Kart is a casual oriented game, which usually cause less bump than hardcore oriented game).

Vinnk,
any update on Mario Kart Wii availability in your Town ?

Might not be what you're getting at, but consider that Golden Week had no significant effect on hardware last year.

I looked it up recently, and the only system that increased by a significant amount was Wii, and that can be completely attributed to increased inventory, as it was still not easily attainable at that point.

(I'm not sure whether or not English is your first language, your post history doesn't have any posts with enough text in them for me to really judge. This is meant to be helpful, not rude:) English doesn't really have a letter/word for "10000". When you write "300M" people think "300000000" when you mean "3000000".

In English "K" means "1000", so "2K" is "2000". You could say Mario Kart DS is at "3000K". We use "M" for "1000000", so "3M" is "3000000". You could say Mario Kart DS is at "3M".

Thanks for the info. GAF used to post Dengeki stuff, but the last year or two it hasn't really gotten as much attention.

I think at this stage the Wii is passed the point where it will recieve big boosts outside of holidays. As long as it continues to sell 40-50k during slow periods, and 70-80k during peak periods, Nintendo will be happy.

Underwhelming Wii numbers given MK's awesome debut, but man, PS3 is seriously struggling. Wii can do a meh week and still maul the PS3.
