I know its sony but how long can things continue like this before the plug is pulled? This is desperate.

Sony must be dreading the holiday season. Wii U release as well as the 3DS doing solid numbers means they are in for a brutal holiday season.

So, those in the Dreamcast chart are the totals up to the first 43 weeks, no? Famitsu or MC? I'm asking just to have some confirmation.

It's the highest LTD available from Famitsu weekly top 30, yearly top 100 etc. until Sep, 1999. It's not necessarily the exact LTD of these games by September 1999 (it may have been higher, or lower even if Famitsu adjusted). Same thing for the Vita, until this week.

i think famitsu, i don't really believe MC ever tracked the dreamcast (or at least i do not remember MC dreamcast data on garaph)

MC tracked Dreamcast. MC started in 1994 (or 1992 if their English page is to be believed...).

I know its sony but how long can things continue like this before the plug is pulled? This is desperate.

Their "strategy" for Japan consists of conceding any hope of decent sales for the holidays and praying that GE2 and Soul Sacrifice result in a miracle early next year.

Pretty similar to their Western "strategy," except that the "big" and hopefully miracle-causing titles (Declassified/Liberation) actually are coming out this year. But if either of those miracles fails to occur, all indications are that they have nothing.

Never seen those figures of MC. Are they in some page?

Not that I know of. There isn't much MC data from the 90's available today.

Awesome start for BD. I was hoping it would crack 100k first week, but it blew well beyond that. Must have been a good sell through.

If it weren't for Valkyria, this would be a fantastic list of games that didn't get sequels. *trollface.gif*

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I would say that core focused new IPs have performed pretty awfully in modern Japan.

I mean, we're talking up how great a 140K debut it for a new IP, but it is ultimately still a 140K debut.

Off the top of my head, Dragon's Dogma has to be the biggest success in a while right?

Yeah, and before that, I would say Inazuma Eleven, though we could argue that's more of a kids game than a traditional core game (which would probably be mid teens to early 20's in Japan?).

funny; I was actually thinking the opposite. It's often used as a posterchild for fresh new innovative IPs that didn't sell; but close to 200k doesn't seem that bad for a DS RPG

I would say it's more the contrast of being the 11th best rated DS game of all time while being the 158th best selling DS game in Japan behind EA's Sim City DS, which was in fact published by EA in the region.

Inazuma Eleven debuted very low though, had good legs but didn't get really big until the sequel. It's obviously still a successful new IP, but the circumstances are quite different from something like Dragons Dogma.

So? Xenoblade is rated even higher and sold less :(

I'm hoping Bravely Default gets a little legs from the word of mouth. If handled properly, this could become SE's new franchise.

Shame I heard that the DLC situation was a mess, though. Fire Emblem got a decent boost due to better DLC plans and I thought BD could use some.

There was a bunch of talking down of Ninokuni DS but the way it sold after it's first week is unheard of for an RPG.

From 170k to an LTD of 600K? That's insane.

Wasn't that heavily influenced by the bomba bins?

Either way, Inazuma Eleven was more impressive; from 40k to 400k

Right. Going into its release Ni No Kuni DS was getting heavily promoted by Level-5, and was also coming off a number of successes like the first Inazuma Eleven. That's why it got a really big initial shipment but ended up having terrible sell-through until the price was slashed.

It looks better now only because Level-5's recent record has been so bad, with a few notable exceptions. (like Little Battlers on the 3DS)

That's because not everyone has the chance of shipping 600k copies of their RPG in the first week.

Same situation as XIII-2 -- will be selling its first week copies forever.

How much of a second life do people think MH3G will get from this budget release? Paired with cross platform play with the Wii U, might it reach the 2 mil mark?

And even i am moderately surprised
How much of a second life do people think MH3G will get from this budget release?

a massive one

MH3G had moved to bargain buckets a few months ago, 1980 yen - 2480 yen for NEW copies as the -tail- of supply seemed to being run down with 1680 yen not being unusual for second hand copies?

Now? lol - IF you can find a copy? 4980 yen... and the price is going to go up and up and up until the budget release hits.

p.s. the BEST PRICE covers have a huge "LOOK AT MY GENETIAL WARTS!" effect.

Is Bravely Default likely to have legs once word of mouth gets around about the new series? (Assuming it's a quality game of course)

Also those Vita sales....Quite disheartening.

Edit : Question which has probably been askes a million times, but what's the reason that we don't have a service like Media Create in America? I understand we have the NPD which is vague, I'm guessing due to them selling the results. But why can't we have something nice like MC for us over here? :(

Anyone?

In Japan never fails with atlus titles to drive it up the originals to insane prices.

nope, I thought the DS version also bombed as much as the PS3 one

I think the problem with the PS3 one was the fact the DS one harmed the image of the game and on top of that there just was not enough marketing done for the game period. Real damned shame. The smart move would have been holding off on the DS and releasing it the same time as the PS3 version. By far that would have been the safest route of action. Could have gotten folks buying both, just to have the book while playing the PS3 version.

I've been openly doubtful about its viability since before it was officially announced as NGP, and in almost every respect, it's failed to meet even my most pessimistic predictions, particularly with respect to Japanese third-party support; the absence of SE, Konami, and Capcom from the Vita portion of Sony's TGS conference speaks volumes. It's really something.

Sony really lacked long term foresight on this. Coming off the relative success of the PSP (when compared to other handhelds that've gone against Nintendo), they really really should've had some viable strategy to fend off the age of smartphone + usual Nintendo domination. As it stands, I really don't see how they can turn things around. They don't have a handheld blockbuster as Nintendo do. Shit, Nintendo's got like 5 of them.

Very interesting... I could see this doing exceedingly well on the eShop. Not unlike Animal Crossing. I hope Nintendo sticks to their boast from several months ago and continues to share digital sales data publicly.

I have a feeling they'll talk about them in terms of percentages of overall sales as part of their quarterly releases.

NPD did used to give out concrete numbers... don't know why they stopped.

Lack of competition. There's no incentive to give out numbers for free when you can make people pay for them instead because you're the only major sales tracker. Whereas in Japan there's a marketing benefit to giving out numbers.

I really hope that Nintendo will soon roll out an account system for the 3DS now that they're releasing so many games on the eshop.

Would be nice if they allowed you to switch eshop regions as well and play those downloaded games.....

Not that I know of. There isn't much MC data from the 90's available today.

Nintendo was smart enough to staunch the GBA's success when the DS arrived.

The bolded part is pretty awesome. Cheaper than retail!

(it's sad to be impressed by this, but that's understandable given the current situation of downloadable versions of retail games on eShop - and other services, too)

Not really, most shops sells games for less than MSRP/RRP

Despite the roaring success of the 3DS, handheld market really isn't up that much over last year, less than 10%. Hardware revenue is likely up much higher than units though

Will start doing this every week again, think it's going to be really interesting to see how things shape up not only in the last 10 weeks, but the first couple months of next year.(will just add 2013 into this data, giving us three years to look at.)

PSP(2011 YTD)= 1,582,719
PSP+PSV(2012)=1,206,361(-23.8%)

Looking ahead to Week 42, PSP did 22,095 in 2011.

3DS+DS(2011 YTD)=2,671,762
3DS+DS(2012 YTD)=3,467,870(+29.8%)

Looking ahead to week 42, 3DS+DS did 77,267 in 2011.

All handhelds(2011 YTD)=4,254,481
All handhelds(2012 YTD)=4,674,231 (+9.9%)

3DS has a bunch of new colors and Animal Crossing left, December will be huge. They'll be up a good percentage by the end of that month.

Probably because this time last year 3DS started ramping up and Vita still isn't helping make up for PSP's decline.
