Media Create Sales: Week 43, 2016 (Oct 24 - Oct 30)

Monster Hunter XX is March 18th. But no, Capcom said no port. This is just another coincidence. they're jumping to PS4.

We calmed this week with Monster Hunter in these threads. Everyone relevant and irrelevant jumped to the other thread, why do you want to bring drama so soon again.

January isn't far and we'll see if Nintendo abandoned Japan, handhelds and Monster Hunter.

It's not all black and white.

They can release MH on both PS4 and 3DS simultaneously.

3DS for JPN market and PS4 for the western markets.

Ohh I don't think there will be a "hidden" PS4 version or buy anything from that rumor.

Just saying there is a middle ground in this game. But Capcom prob will just continue what they're doing and keep the series on handhelds.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
We' ve heard for MH4U PS4, MHX PS4, now it's the time for MHXX PS4.

It has become a running joke every time a new MH is hinted, Ι lost the count how many times before I heard MH is returning to Sony

If and when Capcom decides to go multiplatform it will be the time of recognition.

Another topic, at the end there's no Taiko no Tatsujin home console Christmas season game this year. This is the first time, since when?

They didn't have many choices, since Nintendo just abandoned the Wii U. They could've tried PS4 this year, but personally I think they needed this rest. Maybe skipping one year they can generate interest again next year.

Since 2008 Wii first and Wii U later get Taiko for holidays.. Apparently they don't see benefit releasing it at Wii U or any other system this year.

Oooh, I knew something was amiss. Taiko is usually announced sometime in September, so it's way too late for this year. As you said, it's most definitely for the best.

By the way, now there's no more room for announcements for this year, here's the line-up for Nintendo consoles for the rest of the year (retail only).

Also, not sure if that's typical Konami MO, but they have barely mentioned PowaPro 3DS since TGS. Only website update is a couple of new characters and that's it. Nothing at all (screens, etc.). Same for Kamen Riders All-Stars from Bamco.

Some news on mobile front
CyberAgent reported - http://pdf.cyberagent.co.jp/C4751/irQp/TgYI/vSVF.pdf
They became quite big and in the league of devs that are no longer "one-hit" company, but can reasonably establish production of successful titles,

Slide 25 is interesting about competition -

The Galaxy 3DS is nowhere to be seen on Nintendo's site. Is some kind of limited retailer release?

I hope WoFF has good legs, it's easily one of my favourite FF spin-offs. Square did a pretty awful job of advertising it trailer wise, and the demos for WoFF/FFXV haven't always been the best advertising for the game. (At least they've done better with advertising FFXV recently, thank god!) Especially for the localization, one the game's best strengths is how genuinely funny it is outside of odd bits of slapstick humor. I nearly didn't even buy the game because of the demo!

Interesting that the PS4 versions did better for SAO and WoFF.

I would have thought Beserk would have done better. Huh.

Actually its more the setting and genre honestly.

Granted Uppers was an original IP it didnt fair any better on the Vita.

You said well, Uppers is a new IP, Crows is a known established IP, there is a little difference among it

Also as Berserk and SOA sales show, there is still a large part of Vita userbase whom did not migrate yet on PS4

Maybe those people like handhelds more the home systems, and I wouldn't be surprised if they will embrace Switch instead of PS4

Dengeki, retail software sales for the year so far:

PlayStation 3: 1.523.503
Nintendo 3DS: 8.125.264
PlayStation Vita: 4.034.683
Wii U: 1.729.107
PlayStation 4: 5.846.255
Xbox One: 34.697

Not including Wii and PSP software sales are down by over 4.6m YoY, with the 3DS taking most of it with 3.9m less.

PS4 is up by over 64% and climbing rapidly, it already surpassed it's total sales of 2015 so it'll continue to grow. That's great and all but PS4 is still not making up for the loss of PS3 sales.

Vita, somewhat surprisingly, is also up, though by a rather small margin.

Berserk Musou got the sales that it deserved imo. Not only they screwed up the marketing but the game itself feels a lot more like quick cash grab than an actual attempt at making a good Berserk title.

That being said, I though 40k wasn't that bad for a quickly re-skinned Musou but going by the replies in this thread, apparently it is?

I feel 40k is bad regardless of how much effort they put into it. The point isn't that they spent less on it and so it selling badly "isn't that bad". Business is about maximizing returns and taking advantage of potential demand to provide goods people want to buy. A Berserk Musou game that no one wants because it is a cheap low effort effort is a waste of potential from a publisher which tries to secure popular brands to make the most out of it. That they put out a poor product only shows that they are bad at their jobs.

Any more of these Kuso Musou and they'll soil the brand badly. KT isn't gonna get Star Wars at this rate. After Musou Stars the only other thing left to try is Fire Emblem, since at least Zelda Musou was really good and sold well. If they mess those up than they should stick to SanSengoku and Wan Pissu. Maybe the odd Orochi and Gundam Musou.

Fair enough. I didn't look at it that way.

Though, while this is a bad look for KT I think the fact that it might send the right massage to them is good. At least for people who are tired of their overly sub-standard Musou games.

Low effort cash grabs = Low sales

I gotta admit though that as a Berserk fan, it bothers the hell out of me that they had to mess up this game to get that massage. So at the very least I hope KT actually realizes what went wrong with Berserk Musou and doesn't think it bombed solely because of the license.

I'm not familiar with the Berserk fandom. But considering its age and themes I'm going to guess its fans trend on the older side. People who might have been console players awhile ago. But as we've gone over before older people are trending towards mobile gaming and are less likely to own a Playstation. Which means the people who currently own a PS4 or Vita don't overlap much with Berserk fans. That's my hypothesis at least.

By this logic do you expect Yakuza 6 to tank hard being a PS4 exclusive? Are the PS3 fans gone forever? I think it will be interesting to see the results.

I'm also not familiar with Yakuza, but considering it's much more prominent game series I find it easy to swallow that its fandom has moved over to the PS4 in greater numbers or are willing to buy a system for it. Yakuza 5 was 4 years ago, and Yakuza 0 was last year, so its fanbase should be more in tune with those still buying console games.

Would that be assuming that there are no Yakuza fans who are also Berserk fans? This is one of my pet peeves, where people think of fanbases are specific static groups with no significant overlap. Berserk Musou is a game that is clearly targeted towards people who: a) want to play a Musou game, b) want to play a Berserk game, c) want a game that has both. We can't say that Musou doesn't have a fanbase on consoles, they clearly do. The fact that a much, much more popular franchise like Attack on Titan failed to take off in Japan as a Musou game, indicates to me that there is a more fundamental problem with the Musou franchise than the Berserk one.

Hardcore Berserk fans are definitely a niche and cannot be counted on, but there is enough awareness of the brand for it to have value if it delivers the experience general audiences of a certain demographic expect from it. Case in point: Dark Souls doing well for itself even though it is a series on consoles targeting a adult audience. The Dark Fantasy audience definitely exists, they're just clearly not impressed by this effort.

Or musou just went shitty-er?

10 to 5 years ago I'm a huge musous fan, now I bought only Dragon Quest Heroes 2.

23 Years old. Both a Berserk and Musou fan. Own a PS3 and PS4. Zero plan to buy the game right now.

Berserk Musou went from "Day 1" to "might get it once it hits $20 - $15 range" as I saw more of it. It's just a low effort title, which imo deserves the low sales.

Edit: Just saw duckroll's post and it's funny cause I'm a HUGE Yakuza fan as well.

The Galaxy 3DS is nowhere to be seen on Nintendo's site. Is some kind of limited retailer release?

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/hardware/lineup/index.html

As Okami pointed out, it's indeed a retail exclusive (Toys 'R' Us). Should've removed it from the list.

That reminds me, do we know what that mysterious western collaboration they've been teasing for a while is about? Does it even exist (anymore)? :p

I'm not going to argue about the state of the Sonic franchise in Japan, but I don't think Sonic Boom is the game to use to gauge that :p

Software down 5mln units...

JPN market is in dire state

Yup. That sure is one painful transition, makes you wonder if the market will recover. Next couple of years (with Switch, and that speculated "handheld") are going to be........ interesting, to say the least.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
If these themed Musou games are starting to tank, will a Final Fantasy Musou still do a good job?

I think it would largely depend on the approach and quality. I don't think DQ Heroes would be as successful if it was a bogstandard Musou.

Also it's pretty clear that the FF name isn't too strong right now.

Some news on mobile front
CyberAgent reported - http://pdf.cyberagent.co.jp/C4751/irQp/TgYI/vSVF.pdf
They became quite big and in the league of devs that are no longer "one-hit" company, but can reasonably establish production of successful titles,

Slide 25 is interesting about competition -

In order from top to bottom lines:
Mixi (Monster Strike), Bandai Namco (Lots of famous IP, see here), CyberAgent (this), Gungho (Puzzle and Dragons), Colopl (Rune Story/ShiroNeko Project and Tennis), then gumi, Klab, Marvelous and Crooz

It's interesting that Bandai Namco, their partners in the mobile and VR iM@S Cinderella Girls franchise, are listed as neck and neck with Cyberagent in that list, whilst other publishers expected to be somewhere near there like Sony and maybe Square Enix are missing.

Slide 24 talks about their major revenue contributors and how they rank on the iTunes and Appstore, which corroborates their 'multiple hit' factory.

From top to bottom boxes:
- iM@S: Starlight Stage, DQ: Monsters Super Light, Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse, Joker Gangroad, 100 sleeping princes/dreams, Alternative Girls and Sengoku-enbu. (Still, their real hits are the first 4 which Cygames developed/co-produced, and Sengoku-enbu)

To be fair PS4 probably has way higher digital ratio compared to PS3 so that could make up some of the difference.

If these themed Musou games are starting to tank, will a Final Fantasy Musou still do a good job?

Game of Thrones Musou is the only thing they could do to get me to buy it. Is that show popular in Japan at all? So many characters and enemies possible in said game.
