Mortal Kombat Armageddon - first screens, info

I'll buy it. MK was a staple in my childhood, I've purchased almost every MK game sans the Special Forces crap.
This is the final MK game with these characters so, it'll be a tearful goodbye.

Mortal Kombat II was like a living nightmare, that one could really come to be fascinated with and wouldn't want to wake up from.

For what came after, then like a radio, it started going from fine sound and slowly tuning to static back and forth.
We still hear some bits of that song but nowhere as clear as then.
So we keep on listening through the noise, hoping for it to get right again.

That beat needs to come back clear and next gen with the volume turned up!

MK 1 - 3 all looked great, no arguing.

This just looks utterly sub-par. NO, i haven't played it. But these screens don't make me want to.

That's what Powerstone is for. A game that's actually fast paced, exciting and has an interesting pick up and play multiplayer game.

What's fun about MKD? It's like a generic 3D fighter from 1998 except....really poorly designed with slow, sluggish controls, a limited movelist and a pointless stance changing gimmick that doesn't actually add anything to the gameplay. Besides the Mortal Kombat title what does MKD have over games like War Gods and Mace: The Dark Age?

This point comes up in every MK thread and is seemingly the only defense anyone can bring up. It's "just fun". Why settle for a bad game?

no 3d MK game yet has even been "just fun" the beat em up was decent. But none of the unbalanced broken fighters were ever fun.

They are if you don't care about it being a deep and uberbalanced fighter. MK is a fighter for casuals who just want to pick up the controller and play. Can't do that with VF, DOA, whatever.

Because it isn't a bad game.

What's stopping you from picking up the controller and playing VF or DOA? At a beginner/casual level VF is not any different from every other fighting game.

MK has...blood. That's like the only difference.

Fuck the people that say THIS SERIES NEEDS TO DIE. It went through some shitty games, but Deception was the best MK ever. Ever. Incredibly entertaining multiplayer game with a shitload of stuff to unlock. Most of you are basing your opinions on the old games.

The new series is good. Really.

Leave your brains in Virtua Fighter 4 and just have fun.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. MK nowadays is all about the fun and funny stuff you can do in it, and it should not be taken seriously.

Yeah, I sort of agree. I can never see me buying another MK at full price, but I actually appreciate how cheesy it is. I think a lot of people are under the impression that these games are meant to be serious, but i'm pretty sure they are not.

I read today that this isn't even coming out in Europe (neither is Spyhunter 3). Well done Midway...hopefully they won't release it in America either, and then everyone will be happy :D

(yes, I stole that joke from Penny Arcade. I apologise)

I thought they were moving to next gen?

This is the last one, and then next gen a go go.

I too wish they would have left Subby as some random looking ninja guy with ice powers, then this stupid looking Shredder ripoff.

I know this is supposed to end the series, and set up for an entirely new roster of folks....but... I WANT TO SEE SMOKE WITH NEXT GEN GRAPHICS :(

MAKE IT HAPPEN DAMNIT!!!

Casuals are exactly who the DOA series is meant for.

Case in point: Last night I watched two assholes take turns losing to the final boss of DOA4. I ate two bowls of cereal while they lost again and again for about fifteen minutes. Finally they threw the gamepad my way and I beat the boss on my third attempt... and my second attempt was damn close.

Never seen the game before, never played it before, did not use a stick, and had a button layout that I hated... and I still laid it out just like that. Because it's for casuals.

Man, that's some ugly ass art. It's like the Rob Liefield of the videogame world. Maybe it actually is Liefield who consulted on it. "Needs more muscles!"

No, it's because you have played fighting games before and those two before you were the real casuals.

I can beat the boss of any new fighting game at first few tries because I'm quite familiar with how they play. The same is true with you.

Hey Midway, if you want to stop losing lots of money, make some fucking good games.
No kidding... I thought there was a glimmer of home a few years ago (they seemed to be turning themselves around slightly), but this just looks so bad. I miss the Midway of the 80's and early 90's.

I always feel a bit dirty about playing a western game trying to imitate Japanese-style art. It just seems so artificial to me.

For some reason, it doesn't bother me at all with RE4 and MGS3. Maybe because they fuckin' r0X ma SoXXXX

Or maybe because those aren't Western developed games.

They make this stuff because it continues to sell and sell and sell. While it may not appeal to the discerning critics at GAF, the real market is a far larger place than just GAF.

If GAF ruled the world, Beyond Good & Evil, Psychonauts and Advent Rising would have all been smash hits.

:O

I always meant to ask you why you liked this series enough to buy multiple versions of the same games again and again... Looks like you finally either outgrew or just got tired of it (the series). Good job. :)

Yes, yes, we *know*. We will always know that the gems that don't sell big numbers will coexist with the others that do. So what? Doesn't excuse this from being an undeniably ugly-looking game that, so far, deserves all the criticisms about its visuals that it has received.

Exactly, they had no clue how to interupt or fight AI and I did. Thus it was challenging for them and a formality for me, even with a control setup way out of my preference.

If you insist that you are a fighting game boss specialist, go take a few swipes at VF4 Dural and get back to me.

fighting games get boring, kick bunch , kick punch, kick punch.

i want one where you can runn off screen jump in a car and drive around texas eat some food then come back and fight.

The character art is nowhere near as bad as some of you make it out to be. Do some look horrible? Oh hell yes. Look at Reptile, wtf happened to him. :(

Some character designs are actually pretty good in that group shot. It's basically hit or miss with the designs. One thing the MK team messed up on is making the current gen MK's have this odd cartoony look with the weirdest looking blood I've ever seen. Hopefully for the next gen one, they take blood notes from Dead Rising, and go for a dark realistic look.

Some of the in game screens look horrible to me, worse than Deadly Alliance and Deception. Although that could be because next gen has already spoiled me. That create a character has to go though, it's such a useless feature in fighters....

Though this is gaf, so everyone has to chime in with a comment they think is clever/funny/witty.

The MK games this gen have been decent, not amazing by any stretch, but for people who just want a causal fighter, they've done their job and that's why they've sold well.

Wait, your using the DOA4 boss as an example of it's casualness? Er, you already know how that boss was recieved in general right and casual ain't the word. The play mechanics is easy pickings though for it though.

dude, you can't even begin to DEFEND a game where they can barely get the human anatomy correct...her ass is in front, end of story.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

I walked in, saw two guys not beat a boss for about fifteen minutes, then beat it easily myself. I know nothing else about that boss or that game outside that experience; so far that was my sole exposure; I never read threads about it.

However, I have been playing the rest of the DOA series from the start. While I have fun with it, the series is clearly meant for a different crowd then Tekken, VF, and SF. Comparitively it is a casual fighter, reigning over the sub-genre that Bloody Roar and Mortal Kombat are in.

Does MK even have a storyline that is narrative from game to game?

Anyways, I agree that Scorpion and Sub Zero (And all the characters) were cool when they were not on steroids.

I guess it's not really saying much but MK does have one of the better, more complex stories in a fighting game. It's usually poorly written, vague and inconsistent...but it's there.

It's funny how in MK II under the mask Sub-Zero was Asian but then in 3 he's unmasked and is suddenly some random white guy Ed Boon knew in Chicago. Some Chinese ninja he is.

That reminds me...has anyone else ever heard the MK album? Not just the famous techno music used in the movie, but the songs based on each of the characters with goofy, sappy lyrics. It's so bizarre and cheesy. Even as a kid I knew it was lame. The album is so hilariously awful I've always been surprised it hasn't caught on as an internet fad.

"ohhhh chinese ninja warrior...with your heart so cold. Sub-zeeeeerooo"
