My friend is afraid to play Bloodborne.

It's not scary at all gameplay wise, but some of the mobs definitely look disturbing. I was creeped out the most by the giant spiders because of their massive size. It's why I only did NG+ once lol.

Bloodborne is so amazing. Masterpiece. I want to read a text book that analyzes every last detail

Does anyone have a good link where I can read the lore of bloodborne?

Neve finished but want to read more about the lore and people's theories

Might have to separate conjecture from actual facts at times, but this is detailed and pretty good if memory serves

Warning: very long

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I treated my first playthrough of Bloodborne like a horror game. I'd take a few steps, pan the camera around to look, listen for any footsteps or noises and then take a few more steps. I'd constantly get lost and worry about being ambushed or killed.

Even better if you play it at night with headphones on and the lights off. The sound design is really disturbing, it adds so much to the atmosphere and can be too much at times with the moans, splatters of blood, and howls of grotesque enemies.

Wouldn't really call it a horror game because it's very rarely trying to outright scare you, but it's absolutely a horror-themed game. The frightening imagery helps add weight and tension to the action.

Ahem.

Some people are confusing scariness with unease and being disturbed.
There are almost no jumpscares in bloodborne, but the atmosphere makes me super unease. It's hard to play for a long time. The only time this happened to me was in Latria in DeS.
The first time I saw an Amygdala outside Oedon Chapel I got seriously disturbed.

I'll never understand people being scared of a screen, whether that's a movie, TV show, or game. I just don't get it. Doesn't compute.

But I don't have to get it. I know that some people are, and that's fine. So let them play or watch what they do like.

I get disturb at gore porn in movies like American Mary and maniac. However, scared? Not even close.

- The whole Upper Cathedral Ward area. That fucking music playing constantly, the lack of light, the baby great ones...everything is just ....Fucking disturbing

I'd like to point out as well that this track and many other Bloodborne OST tracks are heavily Krzysztof Penderecki inspired to my ears which is yet another notch in its 'how fucking deep do their obsessions go and how is this popular?' belt.

EDIT: I should probably point out that saying the tracks are inspired by Penderecki is purely my opinion, it wasn't stated anywhere. I've been an admirer of his work (even saw him perform some years back) and he's the first one I thought of when I heard Upper Cathedral Ward and some other moments in Bloodborne.

- Ebrietas, praying at an alter apparently made of another great one. The whole thing is just unexpected and she won't attack you. She is a fucking ugly disfigured lovecraftian monster, but she's just there..praying. Fucking disturbing.

Over a corpse that looks like ROM, no less. To me it looked like she was mourning.

ROM is also the other one that doesn't attack you first, if you wait forever ROM chills forever. Was she was holding the mensis ritual back in a sympathetic gesture? Or only covering it with illusion?

Who knows.

Speaking of inspirations... here's a couple old posts of mine from the BB thread.

On a side note, a friend of mine directed this thread to me, and it's pretty interesting eventhough it might not have influenced BB. There's a plenty of similarities though.

Possible Bloodborne inspiration?
Before I start explaining my theory here I would kindly ask you to understand that I am not forcing any ideas, just showing what I have stumbled upon, it may be 'something' but is likely just wrong turn or just coincidence. I am not sure if this is connected in any way with Bloodborne or it is just my imagination.

For me it all started with curiosity in Bloodborne with tombstones written in Polish language in Hemwick Charnel Lane.

After playing Bloodborne instead of going to sleep I decided to watch one of the old Polish movies that I have on my personal "film bucket list". It is called SANATORIUM POD KLEPSYDRĄ from year 1973.
The first scenes gave me goose bumps, not because it was scary but due to the fact that the atmosphere and looks were strongly reminding me of one of our favorite games. For such an old movie, limited funds and censorship in Poland at that time scenography is simply outstanding.
I only say that there is a slight chance that From Software could have get inspiration from this movie and original book.

The movie is based on one of short novels by Bruno Schulz. Story line seems to be totally irrelevant to Bloodborne. And for most of its length this film is irrelevant to Bloodborne as well. Except it's looks.

The movie is highly surrealistic so there is still many things I might have missed due to the fact that the characters of the movie seems to talk in riddles.

More in the link.
Found few more images of the film by googling.

The middle one reminds me of the creatures in Byrgenwerth.

I've been meaning to see that film for ages honestly, but can't find it with English subs seemingly. I'm also a fan of Bruno Schulz's writing, which got me interested in seeing it.

This director also made another film which I have seen called Diabel (or Devil in English) and the imagery and atmosphere is also fantastic and extremely Gothic.

If you're generally interested in Polish flicks, there's a pretty cool and atmospheric little Horror film Wilczyca and I remember there being an English subtitled version on YouTube. It's not mindblowing but the scenery/cinematography is worth it honestly.

EDIT: On another note, where did you see this English subtitled version of Sanatorium...?

Yeah, I agree with you. I'm not a fan of horror games and Bloodborne never really scared me, it was just (very) disturbing at certain points. Those brain sucking bitches still give me the creeps.

Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing it so far. =/ It looks very intriguing, so I guess I have to try to hunt it down.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Anytime, I could talk about these things all day...obscure films, Bloodborne, obscure music bla bla

Lovecraftian and cosmic horror it's is own subgenre. Some people are scared by it, others are not. Plus there's a lot of body gore and whatnot, so it's definitely not for everyone.

I'm one of the people that get those poignant shivers down my spine when I read a good lovecraft short story.

Bloodborne gave me sheer stunned chills on several occasions.

Once you reach Yahar'Gul, Unseen Village and there's that crazy spider thing crawling on the buildings and people with big bags and the sky is all cosmic and the moon is orange and OH MY GOOOOD!!

It made the game that much more memorable for me.

I figure this is a good a place as any to pepper in a Lovecraft recommendation: Read Dreams In The Witch House.. great sense of cosmic horror that this game evokes.

That's my favorite story of his and I was kind of baffled when I found out that it was considered pretty much crap even by readers apparently. All those descriptions of odd geometry etc. really does it for me.

I wouldn't call it scary, but it's certainly got a very unsettling atmosphere to it. I can understand why somebody would be hesitant to play it.

Those screeching crows (and later dog crows) are what unnerves me the most. It's not even that they do much damage, but that sound they make is something I have never gotten used to. Makes me kill them asap so I can avoid hearing it.

It's visually horrifying but I find the audio in the game to be pretty damn scary at times.

Honestly, the Souls games are creepier to me than Bloodborne was. It's all in the creature design.

Nothing in the Souls games begins to touch areas like Upper Cathedral Ward or Bloodborne's sound design and atmosphere in terms of creepiness to me. The enemy design is also much more gruesome. Demon's Souls, perhaps.

Bloodborne is so majestic and beautiful.

Particularly the starting area. Its victorian architecture 👌😚

Never found it scary.

I mean, you can give me the most terrifying ghosts or monsters from PT, Silent Hill, the Conjuring, the Ring or whatever in Bloodborne. I'll happily deliberate them even it take me a few tries. But if you ask me to actually play the games, I'll bail out. Bloodborne is not scary because I AM the one in charge.

I just cant get into the combat in Bloodborne. I love all the souls games but the weird dodgy combat just makes me dislike it. I guess the suggestion would be to git gud but I just dont even want to.

This is interesting... my gf is afraid of horror games, can't play them... she inches forward and nopes and 180s at the slightest noise or shadow in games like resident evil and alien isolation...
In the nicest way possible she's a wimp when it comes to horror games...

But she had no trouble at all with Dark Souls or Bloodborne, It's her favourite contemporary series even.

I didn't really like the whole gun + main weapon mechanic they introduced. If you use Ludwigs Sword instead you can play the game in a reasonably Souls-esque manner. For me it was only a minor adjustment. As soon as I started to get confident with the dodge mechanic, I had no problem enjoying this game. You just have to be a little more pro-active with your attacks as the game doesn't reward you for being slow and defensive.

It's a scary game. Monsters. Suffering. All that. I don't get scared but I like that stuff.

I enjoy horror games and horror books and movies but they don't scare me. Some of them can take my mind to dark places and let me think things I have never thought or don't often think. I like that. Maybe the same thing happens to people who get scared, but they don't like it.

I get scared that I may never know what jmon means.

I played DS3 after BB, and I had the same problem there. The combat just didn't click with me as well as it did in BB. It's feels sluggish, and I can't rely on parrying there. That's why the fast and aggressive enemies and bosses in DS3 were much harder for me.

I was afraid to listen to Slayer when I was a kid. I got over my fear and now Fucking SLAYER! It can be good to get over your fear of something.

I 100%ed BB and DS3 and just started DS1 - been a few days but I still can't adjust to how slow the combat is. I mean, I can do the combat in it but it just doesn't feel as fun as DS3 and especially BB.

Level design is keeping me going though.

I platinumed BB as well, but DS3 remains at 85% as I'm not going through PVP and grinding for items. I had to rely on co-op help with some of the DS3 bosses, but I still enjoyed the main game. The same can't be said about the DLCs, particularly the last one which was just too frustrating for me.
