My PS3 died and I’m trying to live to tell the story

My original fat 60gb PS3 is still going strong I bought it back when they first came out and were scarce / hard to find, security had to escort me out with it when I bought it lol. Anyhow it has never failed or been repaired.

It's had a much better reliability record than my launch (2005) Xbox360 which has died repeatedly from RROD, it was originaly revived via the "Xclamp fix" which lasted a little over a year and now its only kept a live by doing the towel trick every month or so.

Good times. :D

I remembered when my slot drive went haywire. It wouldn't eject the disc. I tried to fix it myself, but it was no-good. Thankfully Sony fixed it even though I warranted the warranty for $150 of course.

RS4-, yes, the ps3 to ps3 ethernet backup that came with firmware 3.15 will save everything; though once it finishes, it will deactivate (not erase) the original ps3, or so I've heard.

Yeah, deactivating is all good. Thanks, hopefully the gilksy thing works long enough that I either buy another ps3 or I just keep on doing it :lol

Well, I had posted a week ago that my PS3 got the YLOD.

Took it to a local shop that fixes those problem and they call me yesterday saying they cannot in my case.

NOoooooooooooooo!
I was really sure they would have been able to, I really need to get those locked saves and deactivate the system.
I've bought a Slim and want to transfer it all.

Really hurts to think I've lost them. (at least I always back up my non-locked saves to a usb stick)

Should I try the Gilksy fix myself? I was afraid to which is why I took it to the shop in the first place.

If all else fails, will I still be able to send to Sony to get a cheap Slim? (it's a launch 20gb unit)

Well supposedly sony won't let you trade it in if it has been opened, which i presume the shop already did...

If they were careful removing the warranty sticker (using a hair dryer), it might still be usable....

The YLOD corresponds to a number of different things that could be wrong with the system, I presume that the shop you took it to did something similar to the gilksy fix (since there are a large number of "shops" or individuals trying to profit off of what is a pretty simple process).

Therefore I believe that if they weren't able to fix it, you wouldn't be able to by just using the gilksy method....but then again, what do you have to lose?

Damn looks like my 80GB semi-BC ps3 is dying. It started with some blueray movies playing in slow motion but if I started another chapter things would play ok or sometimes they would just play fine. Games were playing fine. But last night I started playing DS and going back to nexus game hung on loading screen. I boot the ps3 try to start the game again but it would give error 8001002B. Tried R&C loaded fine. Called ps3 support and guy asks me to restore defaults and says if I see problem again I have to send in :(.After that I tried DS again and every thing worked fine. So I am wondering if the bluray is dying?

Fuck I don't want to spend another $170 for repairs since this would be the second time. Does Gamestop do trade-ins for the slim with older models? If so how much?

My 60gig launch unit stopped reading discs of any kind a few weeks ago.

No yellow lights or error messages or anything.

Replaced it with a slim right away, because I was anxious to play Yakuza 3.

Try ordering the Maxell Blu-Ray lens cleaner, I use it once a week to prevent dust build-up.

add me to the "launch 60 gb YLOD" list. -- I replaced it with a 120gb slim within 24 hours, I really like the slim. It just looks better from every angle. I don't think the PR shots do it justice.

My pal hates it because he finds the physical buttons primitive and the matte surface makes it look less classy (but at least it's not a scratch/fingerprint magnet.)

It's only a matter of time my fellow GAFer.

I can't believe I'm posting in this thread, but it's true, my launch unit ps3 just got the yellow light...it's the first time something like this ever happened to me. I saw a few guides on how to fix it but at this point I'm going to see if I can backup my data or transfer it to the slim I'm going to buy, I have no patience to fix it and having it die on my a few months from now. I'm sad, I just got FFXIII and didn't even got past Ch1. :(

Sorry about your loss. I felt the same way when it happened to me two months ago. Reflowed it and haven't haven't had any problems...yet.

40gb model YLOD. Damn. This generation has not been kind to me - never had a problem before this gen & my psone purchased 1996 still works to this day (on its side!) but this is the third console i've lost this generation. my ps3 was in what you'd call a well ventilated area but i don't have air con and we've had a pretty brutal summer in australia this year.

gonna try the gilksy approach just so as i can bacukp my data... i don't really mind about the saves but i've got 130 gigs of music and 20 gigs of holiday photos i really couldn't stand to lose. stupid me for not backing up

like i said, brutal summer and all that, but if i get a ylod on my next ps3 then sony is going the way of microsoft for me. i don't want to have to worry about my console dying on me every time i turn it on, it just isn't fun. console manufacturers need to get their reliability standards up to scratch, we gamers have become far too tolerant of this kind of crap this generation.

Sad really. I think it's a consequence of having millions of transistors and more energy and heat output. My N64 is 12 years old and works fine too.

Thanks for the info, yeah, I think they were careful about the sticker.
Hmm.

Sad to see her go.

K... so i start filling out the form for a replacement 60gb on sonys site... and find this:

is this new? plus which should I go with? A cheaper Slim dosnt sound too bad but i wont be able to play my PS2 games.

sorry for shitty pic

this thread is a nightmare for me.
My 60giger is still going strong, but I am deathly afraid of it biting the dust. And since the HD is pretty big, backing up takes a bit of time, so I don't want to do it too too often (both for me and the machine).

I am not sure what to make of this thread! I know that if a ps3 bites the dust, it's likely to be a 60giger, but it kind of is a logical fallacy to infer that means that all 60 gigers will bite the dust. I wish there were some official rate of death states published.

When a ps3 bites the dust and you service it through sony, do they recover your drive?

Man this thread makes me so paranoid. My PS3's fans have been turning on loud for about a year now, now it's not too loud, I'm assuming just to keep the system cool, because the top of my PS3 never runs warm.

Never had it shut down on me mid game or anything like that.

yea, seriously. I wish there was a thread of "my ps3 is 3 years old and still going strong!" so I can at least feel like I have some chance it never dies, instead of just waiting for it to die mid-game. Preferably, just after I cleared some impossible valkyria chronicles mission.

That's why I never worried cause I kept my PS3 in a cool place and always in pristine condition, I never had a game fail on me so the thought that it might fail never crossed my mind, but yesterday when playing God of War collection the screen just went black and the yellow light appeared.

I'd say a weekly or monthly backup is probably a good idea, for any PS3 owner.

GAF, I need help to fix my 40Gb PS3.

The problem is that games freeze, but always on the same spot. Examples: FIFA 10 freezes after half time of every match, but works perfectly until then. Bioshock is able to install the entire game (almost 5Gb) from the disk but freezes on the first cutscene of the game. Killzone 2 multiplayer appears to be working normally. Uncharted 2 multiplayer works right until the loading screen before matches are about to start, then it freezes there. The behaviour is consistent for every game.

This leads me to believe the lens is reading discs perfectly except for a certain spot, which causes games to freeze when reading data from that sector on the disk. Could I fix that by simply buying a new lens or do you guys think other parts of the Blu-ray drive are the problem? I'd hate to spend $60 on a new lens and wait 2-4 weeks for it to arrive (I'm in Brazil) and then have that not solve the problem.

I had bought a slim and was planning on selling this system as is, but after two defective slims plus confirmation of a new model (CECH-2100) I decided to keep my old system for now.

Not sure if this is the right thread: I was thinking about eBaying/craigslisting my PS3 60GB. I don't use the PS2 BC anyways and can probably get a premium and get a slim + a game or something..... but I'm assuming I need to have a new slim in my house to do a backup to move all my saves/downloads/etc. right? Are there any saves that cannot be backed up?

I just sold my 60gig PS3 and a couple of old sports games (I kept all the games I wanted) for 310 on craigslist :). Hopefully I can be worry free now

Yes, the save files for a few games can only be copied to the new system if you do a network transfer with the Data Transer Utility.

Does that option actually work now? I remember hearing that despite proper connections and whatnot, no one was able to successfully use that option. At all.

I know. I don't use often though, so it will probably last longer than most reflowed PS3's.

Oh yeah, and can someone explain to me what "still going strong" means? How do you know it's still going strong? Mine was "still going strong" and it just died one day.

Worked fine for me, and I've used it a few times now. It deletes the locked save files from the original system.

It also transfered all my games, so I could play flow on the new system even though I can't download that game from PSN anymore. All you have to do is transfer everything and activate your PSN account and the new system will be pretty much exactly the same as the old one was.

So, add another to the list 'cause my blu-ray laser just died. I might have to bite the bullet and get a slim, but I don't want to lose my sexy fat beast :/

Sadly, Sony isn't handling the distribution in this part of the world, Nordisk Film, is supposed to be extremely shitty, so... yay >_<

We just mean that our ps3s haven't died yet (and in my case, that it has never frozen, except on fallout 3, though that really doesn't mean anything :lol ), and we secretly hope it never will :)

Oh man that sucks =(. Yea I've kept mine is pristine condition as well, the fans usually turn on nomatter where I have my system and it's not too loud but if you listen you can hear them, but then again my system never gets hot to the touch, just warm in the back by the fan. Here's to hopin nothing goes wrong!

I wanted to buy a new ps3 slim yesterday at gamestop (have $200 credit on edge card) but they said they have been sold out for a while. Anyone know when they get shipments in?

You need to get put on a waiting list. Supposedly shipments won't be back to normal for another couple of months.

I'm going to try and go pick up a Slim up now. The fan on my 60gig is getting way too loud for my own sanity.

I just wanted to make sure of the order to run things so I don't fuck up any saves...

0) Update slim to 3.15
1) Backup Utility on phat
2) Reverse Backup Utility on slim
3) Data transfer from phat to slim

Is that right or do I need to run the data transfer first?

Omit number 2. 1 is a must in case anything goes wrong.

Which goes back to my unanswered question a while ago. After the data transfer, is it possible to restore a backup to the original PS3 again?

Now facing the download of all my Rock Band content. :(

I'm confused myself. Other people have mentioned that all the data was still on the old PS3 after the Data Transfer, except for protected saves and that the accounts were deactivated.

Actually you should deactivate your account(s) yourself. And a tip, the transfer won't work unless you login with a PSN account on the new system. It's not necessary to activate anything, just sign in once before doing the data transfer.

After playing Batman and LBP for a few hours yesterday I popped in 28 Days Later and it froze at a scene. Tried returning to the XMB and couldn't.

Restarted the system and the bluray wouldn't be shown under the video secction.

Tried a DVD, game, and CD and nothing. The little clock in the top right was just spinning and spinning.

Tried resetting the system, restoring, and other things.

Does this mean the bluray drive is fried?

Phoned Sony and they want $198 CDN for repair or replacement.

It is a 40GB bought November 07. I babied it, but last week moved it from the horizontal position to the vertical position.

Anyone have any suggestions?

No.

I moved my TV and entertainment center but the PS3 was off at the time. There was power going to it, it just wasn't booted up.

take your ps3 apart and hold your ear down to the bluray drive as you insert a disc. if you hear 3 faint 'ticks' then it's your laser.

mine did the same exact thing as yours about 6 months ago and i just bought the entire drive, going to replace the laser in my defective drive so i can have it as a backup.
