I don't know much of anything about sound systems. But my PS4 is hooked up to my 5.1 via Optical set to Primary Output > Digital Out > Dolby. Audio Format Priority > Bitstream Dolby. And all my speakers are working perfectly, with the back receivers picking up sound whenever someone is shooting behind me. So, I dunno.

Bitstream Dolby is your friend and supported by most games and older receivers. I use my HDMI ARC port for the receiver and that has worked great.
