"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

While may 360 and my bro's are kaput, a friend gave me his, and I borrowed another friend's 360 (in return for my bro's PSP), and so I managed to play a game of Halo 3 in co-op on Legendary, which almost made me forget that my system died. Almost.

So.. anyone have any luck in getting MS to repair a near-faulty disc drive for free? My drive has scratched two game discs to the point where I get consistent DRE's and I want it fixed but really don't want to pay for it. I just got this refurb back in the beginning of Jan. after my original 360 RROD and considering I am looking at rebuying the two games that are trashed I don't want to add ontop of that.

Wow First, that's probably the worst story I've ever heard of people going through warranty repairs on anything before in my life. I feel bad for you. But keep pressing on with the BBB on this subject, don't just deal with MS, especially how they treated you. If no one fights this, and thinks the 3 year warranty is acceptable as a trade off still, there's something wrong somewhere.

Just keep reopening the BBB case, and tell them how MS said they remedied the situation which was even worse.

The more I think about it the more it aggravates me. Especially since I am getting a swift kick in the balls after spending THOUSANDS of dollars on Xbox 360 related purchases.

I am glad that there are no longer any doubts as to the reliability of this hardware, but I think people do not understand how seriously terrible this really is. The hardware is so fucked that Microsoft cannot even send working units out of their repair centers. Even if the unit works out of the center, they seem to be more susceptible to breaking than when they come out of the factory for retail shelves.

Keep in mind that my consoles have been in a wide open area with plenty of room to breathe. Every one I have had has always been hot as hell after five minutes of just browsing the dashboard. The next time you turn your console off after some long gaming session, lift it up and touch the bottom surface of it. You'll be surprised how hot the two sections where the GPU and CPU sit. I think there is no "repair" that can be done to this thing. It is not meant to be played as heavily as someone like myself (and many on GAF as well) uses a console.

Does Microsoft think that a customer like me would ever tell anyone they know to get one of these consoles? Perfect example is my sister talking to her boyfriend on the phone while I was dicking around on the phone with MS support. She was telling him about how this was my fourth broken Xbox and how prone to breaking they are. Do you think he is going to run out and buy a 360 anytime soon?

I was planning on holding off on that new PS3 until the end of the year, but Microsoft really does not deserve any more of my money at this point. I am going to look into what I can get on ebay for all of the stuff I have.

1st Unit - Born 10/05 - Died 12/06 - RROD
2nd Unit -Begin 12/06 - Died 5/07 - No Video Output*
3rd Unit -Begin 5/07 - Died 1/08 - RROD*
4th Unit -Begin 2/08 - Died - 2/08 - Disk Read bullshit*

This is pretty much where I am at right now. The refurb that I got last week is disk read erroring like it is going out of style. Someone is calling me from MS tomorrow, so I'll let you know what they say. I would say that it is completely unacceptable for your "repaired" console to be doing this. You should call them tomorrow.

Not that it makes any difference... but I'll say it again.

I just talked to a repair specialist. I cannot believe the difference in the experience. This guy was to the point and he gave me his direct number. It is a shame that MS only sends you to these guys when you have "multiple" console failures.

This time they are making me send in my power brick.

The always seem to ask if the 360 is plugged directly into a wall. What would someone do if their 360 was not near a wall outlet?

I don't know why you continue to put yourself through this, man. I know that you have a lot of games for the system, and you've invested a lot of time and money into your hobby. But step back and just ask yourself: "Is this really worth it?"

I've only (!!!) gone through 3 consoles. I was pretty much done after the BS that I had to go through on the second system. The ONLY reason why I have a third, is because I got an absolutely insane deal on the system and almost 10k MS points. If the Elite dies, its not a big deal to me. I'll sell the games, hard drive, controllers, and cables, and chuck the console in the trash, wiping my hands free of Microsoft.

You have to remember that Microsoft loses money everytime they send a system out to you. They lose LESS money sending out another defective system that came back, got "repaired and tested", then sent to you, than they do sending a brand new console.

I hope things work out for ya, 1st. My advice? Go after a Wii or a PS3. You're in this hobby to have fun, which isn't happening. Microsoft has a great online infrastructure, and has plenty of developers to bring fun content. However their hardware is so rediculously unreliable, and their DRMs are so malicious towards endusers, that I can never with a clear conscious recommend an Xbox 360 to anyone.

How much is the trade in for a 360 right now? I actually feel like trading this in and buying a Falcon. On the other hand all my saved games and other crap would be gone which would absolutely suck as well. I'll try giving MS a call and seeing what they have to say about a broken disc drive.

It's good to know that other people have similar experiences. It just bothers me that it had to take all of this to get this level of attention from Microsoft. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping I get a new system and not a repaired console from early 2006. However, due to my past experiences I am not expecting anything. What worries me is that this is not a problem that I can duplicate (except for a specific spot in Lost Odyssey). It just happens randomly in a bunch of different games, but it seems to happen after I have been playing them for a while. What enjoyment can I derive from this system with the risk of a disk read error that will kill my game's progress looming over me?

The fact of the matter is that I never cared if I got a "new" or "refurbished" console. All I have ever wanted was for this thing to work, play my games, and be something that I did not have to think about. If I still had my launch 360 from 10/05 and it worked, I would not even have known that a Falcon console even existed.

The bottom line is this: If my next console breaks, or MS will not fix this console, I am calling it a day with the 360. It is a shame because I think it is a great platform and has some great games. However, it does not outweigh the aggravation of dealing with this treatment. It looks like five consoles is the magic number for me to call it quits with this platform.

I was in Best Buy yesterday checking out all of the PS3 games, and that system is finally starting to build out a nice library of titles.

Okay I am finally home this weekend to update my sad tale:

On Friday after 3 weeks, I finally received a console back from MS to replace my RROD. After all this time I would finally be able to play Burnout Paradise, which had killed my console after playing 5 minutes into the game. So I plug everything back in and power on the refurbished system they sent me. Lo-and-behold the fans on my new system sounds what I can only describe as when kids attach baseball cards to their bicycle spokes to make that *click click click* noise or *fap fap fap* noise to GAF. As a result I can't hear my damn TV over the sound of the console. My television needs to be up to 75% to actually hear that loud ass DJ Atomica in Burnout Paradise. It is that bad.

So I call up the MS rep., who was a foreign person and useless. At one point she freaking asked me to unplug my console and try a different outlet! WTF will that do to fix my fans!!! They were giving me such a hard time because my system was working and not dead. I tried to calmly explain that I had received someone else's console after I sent mine in for repairs and now this one's fans sound horrible. I never had noise problems (other then how loud the Xbox360 is to begin with) with my console that I sent in. About 45 minutes into the call I began to yell at the person because she would not give me to her manager. She says my console is not broken and the *fap fap fap* noise is normal. I'm telling her it is not and I would like to speak to a manager to tell them the console I sent in had no fan problems like this. Finally she caves in and they are now sending me another coffin.

I'm about at my wits end, if the next console that MS sends to me is defective or faulty in any way (or if they dare send me this horrible sounding console back), I am trading in my Xbox360, all my games, accessories, etc. and getting a PS3. After three times I definitely am not going to put up with MS's shit anymore for their fucking incompetence when it comes to making reliable console hardware or even repairing their own hardware.

If it makes you feel any better just know that myself and a lot of other gamers are in the same situation as you are. It seems that once your first 360 breaks, it is just an endless cycle of repairs every few months. I have no doubts about the suspect quality of the 360 consoles leaving the repair center both from my experience and what I have read. The best thing that consumers can do is make other people aware of these experiences.

I have always stated that I was OK with the repair process. I was OK with everything once they extended the warranty to 3 years and were not charging customers to repair broken systems. However, it just gets to a point where you feel like this is just complete disregard for their customer base who they rely on for continued revenue in the form of game and accessory purchases. It just defies logic from a business standpoint.

I'll say it again: this is a company that spends a tremendous amount of money to get new customers. Why would they cut corners and shaft the people who have already jumped onboard and are spending money on their platform?

It's bullshit, that is what it is. Sending refurbished consoles with other problems as a solution to a broken console is ridiculous. And having their technical person on the phone try to tell me that the referb with fapping nosies coming from the fans was normal and I would have to live with it since the console was still paying games is laughable and actually a little insulting. Now I have to wait seven days for the coffin to get here, then seven days for my fapping console to reach them, and then another seven days for the shitty refurb they will probably send me back. By my estimates I will have been without a Xbox360 for at least 5 weeks during this entire ordeal.

Why are people receiving 08 models from the repair center while I am on my FOURTH broken 360 and I am getting models from 2006? What a joke.

Here is my ongoing BBB Complaint:

I'm having similar problems in which MS is going to tell the BBB that my problem is resolved without doing a single thing as of yet. It looks like I'll be filing a second complaint as well.

Essentially, once you commit to supporting MS thorugh all of this, they stop listening to your threats to go PS3. FYI.

As consumers it is worthwhile to check into all of our options. Unfortunately there is not much recourse for us if you feel slighted by a huge multi-billion dollar corporation. The Better Better Bureau is a tool that we can use to resolve disputes when you feel like a company is not holding up their end of the bargain:

Our Vision:
An ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each other.

Our Mission:
BBB’s mission is to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust. BBB accomplishes this mission by:

* Creating a community of trustworthy businesses
* Setting standards for marketplace trust
* Encouraging and supporting best practices
* Celebrating marketplace role models, and;
* Denouncing substandard marketplace behavior

Be Responsive
Address marketplace disputes quickly, respectfully, and reasonably.

Do you trust that Microsoft is going to send you a repaired console? Do you trust in the quality of work done at their repair centers?

Do you think that sending previously broken consoles out to consumers that have a very poor reliability rate is a "best practice"? Is it a "best practice" to make a customer be without a product for 5 weeks when obviously their repair center failed to fix your console?

So, I just got Lost Odyssey; place it in the machine and part way during the options screen my 360 decides to RROD in the middle of it all.

I don't even want to bother with customer service; so if I was to buy one of the cheaper model 360s (like the core model or whatever they have now.) would my hard drive from my old 360 work with that model?

It would, but you'll have issues with any XBLA games you've bought.

Oh, and don't let them get away with it... just use the website if you don't want to call them.

I got my refurb on Friday, June 2006 (my previous refurb was Nov 2007, lasted a month). Runs louder than my previous consoles, but much much cooler. I'm surprised at how cool it runs, hopefully the heat is actually being dissipated and not just staying trapped in the case. I guess it would get really hot if the later was the case, but I ran it for 3 hours straight and it got lukewarm. Crossing my fingers that 3rd time's the charm as far as refurbs are concerned.

I know MS doesn't give a rat's ass about one person's complaints. Oh well, if it turns out badly with my third Xbox360 they will just be losing a customer for all future game and accessory purchases not to mention the fact I will never buy a piece of Microsoft hardware again. And to top it all off I will make sure my family, friends, and co-workers know what a crappy pieces of hardware they produce.

This is what I get for betraying Kutaragi this generation! He has forsaken me. :lol

I've never sent anything to a company to be repaired where they sent a refurbished item back that was not your own. If I was actually paying for the repairs and they sent me back this faulty one I sure as hell would raise a complaint with the BBB.

Best way to tell if it's not dissipating heat is to check the temp of your discs after you've played a game. If they're roasting and the exhaust heat is cool then you have problems.

Welp, mine finally bit it yesterday (finally=8 months). Was getting a fair share of disc read errors but I didn't want to believe that was leading to anything. I hadn't booted up the console for a few days and sure enough, ze' RRoD.

I feel like some after school special. "I didn't think it could happen to me... but it did!"

Disc read errors and RROD are completely unrelated. So basically congratulations, because you're getting two issues fixed for free.

Fuck this piece of shit hardware. I think I'd rather get the RROD (and possibly get the whole thing replaced) than these constant Dirty Disc Errors. I just got this unit back from MS about two weeks or so ago for the same problem, and it looks like they did a FANTASTIC job of not fixing the problem at all. Every fucking hour I get one, and when you're playing Lost Odyssey and you can't always make it to a save point in a reliable amount of time, that becomes a giant pain in the ass.

Psychotext, I read this post of yours yesterday while at work, and it stuck in my head, so last night I put in around 2 hours on Lost Odyssey and finished up Disc 1. When I took it out, it was flaming hot (the disc, that is), so I felt behind the 360 and while the exhaust was hot there wasn't much of it coming out.

RRoD #4 on the way I guess :|

So my launch 360 RRoD last week and sent it in on Wednesday. I hadn't really looked through this thread before but basically I'm going to get back a refurb unit possibly from '06 (?) with no new hardware inside that usually breaks down faster than my original?

I'm just starting out on my RRoD adventure so I'm not really sure on anything. I assume I'm not getting back my launch system correct? That one was extremely loud as well so I guess I'm expecting a loud one back from Microsoft anyways.

It's not that simple. Some machines they will fix, others they will bin. You may get a new machine or you might get a refurb.

It's all a big adventure! :lol

The refurb they sent me two months ago is fine, but looking back I wish I would have just bought a Falcon and sold the refurb which is loud as *hell*.

Oh boo whooo, they deserve what they get for making people jump through hoops with their umpteenth console to get the problem fixed. I would say the same thing for any product I buy that has a widespread problem and go through a cycle of sending in something to get it repaired only to have it break on them again.

A buddy of mine just got his 3rd system back. It RRODed again within a couple of hours. He's ebaying it for spares and trading in his games against a PS3 at the weekend. It had an earlier May 06 manufacturing date than any of his previous ones which ties up with what some of you guys are saying.

The only possible explanation I can think of is that MS is basically sending out any old crap they can to tide people over until the Opus revision hits. God knows how many machines you poor bastards will go through until that happens.

Hi guys a question:

This is my second 360, and I had had it since January 13, 2008. Its been fine except for the last couple of days. A couple of days ago, I go to play COD4 and am on the startup screen, I notice it is just as loud (if not louder than when it is playing a game/disc. I didnt think much of it.

I then dont play it for about 3 days (Dragon Quest VIII FTW) and today I decide to load up Ninja Gaiden Black (disc) and again here how loud it is. I play for maybe 5 mins and I get lights. I think "not again," but it turns out to be 2 RED LIGHTS. I consult the manual and it tells me 2 RED LIGHTS are for OVERHEATING. The problem is, it wasnt hot--at all. So I turn it off and try again, same thing, same amount of time. I then try it a third time, but this time, I only go to the startup screen and dont load up any game. I hear it start out at about a regular noise level but then it steadily starts to rise. It literally sounded like a turbine engine powering, I started to duck because I thought it would fly out of my window.

This seems to be an odd problem, any ideas/help (aside from "get the coffin")?

Edit: I must add it is a August 2006, though it did make the same noise level as my older one but was MUCH better with heat. I hardly ever found it to be too hot (never did actually).

gdt5016: The reason your fans are going nuts and your console is overheating is because the heat isn't being moved from the inside of the 360 (specifically the chips) to the outside. The thermal sensor detects rising temps and tells the fans to spin up... which isn't actually doing anything to cool your 360 by the sounds of it (heatsink mounting / too much thermal grease... could be a few things).

It's dying basically. It might rectify itself but it seems doubtful.

I thought so too. But the problem is that I havent played it for DAYS (about 3) and when I did, it NEVER felt hot. Saturday morning, there were no problems. Before my last 360, I knew it was coming, becuase of the screen freezing over and over. I still have my original year warranty so I dont have to brick it, so if giving it time doesnt work (which it wont, because I havent played it FOR THREE DAYS) I guess I am calling MS.

Apparently, the back of the system should feel hot. That means that the heat is properly being moved out of the system away from the CPU and GPU. From what I gather, if it is not hot you should worry.

If my Core dies before I get console #4 back from repairs, I am going to jump out a window.

To answer a previous question about the PS3, Yes I'll be getting a PS3 real soon. I am going to wait to sort out this nonsense with the 360 and see how it goes. Regardless, one of the 360s that I have is going up on Ebay and I'll probably just move to the PS3 for multi-platform games. If there is some crazy exclusive coming out for the 360 I may go for it.

Keep in mind that I was not really committed to ever getting a PS3 before I reached the breaking point with this shoddy repair process.

OOOHH, well I feel stupid. My first one used to feel hot, and my second one didnt. So, I guess I'll be calling MS, I'm still within my first year so it should not be a problem--at least, I hope not. :(

chalk up another one for me... im going for my 5th system i believe. i think by the time this generation ends the total of 360's i've owned is going to exceed the number of systems i've had in my entire lifetime (nes, snes, genesis, neo geo, saturn, n64, playstation, dc, ps2, xbox)

A little late, but I just saw this thread.

Mine died of RROD sometime last year after the warranty expired but before the warranty was extended. It was sudden and not brought on by any game in particular. It did not eat discs or anything.

Put everything on craigslist and let someone else pay the 129 to get it fixed.
