NeoGAF Timepiece Thread Of Fine Wristwatches

Resurrecting this thread for a question. I'd like to grab one of the older Omega watches (a Deville or Seamaster) off Ebay, as I much prefer the clean and simple look, as opposed to the busy busy watches that are popular today. From what I've seen, original parts and repairs for the watches can be on the pricey side, but when the newer Omega lines go for $2k and up, spending $300 on an older watch that maybe needs even $800 in repairs & parts is still a hell of a bargain. Is there anything I should watch out for, besides fakes?

I remember in Jr. High we used to argue about who's watch had the most functionality. Of course other than maybe the stopwatch for timing the occasional spontaneous racing event most of the stuff they did were completely useless. "I have a compass.......so.....I'll never get lost on the way to 2nd period! HA!"

I don't even wear a watch anymore. If I want the time I just look at my cell phone.

So, stupid question. I am looking for a REALLY simple watch, textile strap, simple dial and face. I found this from Citizen.

This seems to be on of the only examples of this style which is not a no name. Is this one any good, or is there anything similar which is?

Not sure of the price, it was given to me by my dad when I turned 21 a couple years ago. He got a new one and had been saving that one for me.

I'm partial to fossil.

Something like this is probably going to get a lot more positive attention than most plain or metal watches, assuming you don't wear it to the office (though this photo is unfortunately terrible).

Robertsan:

Don't take it personal, but the watch is a bit on the tacky side. It's just too busy.

Just be happy with that fact that you're a handsome man, live in a nice new loft.... and associate with hot twins.

Oh, and that you can afford diamond encrusted watches!!!

Wow what a cool thread. I'll post pics of an interesting watch I'm wearing at the momment.

holy shit, i totally forgot about this :lol:lol

Heres the pic of said watch, wanted to show it cos I saw someone post a chinese watch.
This is from Shanghai Tang, not a watch company really, but they released this watch to commemorate the handing over Hong Kong to China, hence limited to 1997 pieces.

Don't wear this all the time but I'm quite fond of it.

And yeah, not a fan of busy watches myself either, but some can be quite nice. My daily watch is usually the classima executive by B&M, a nice clean businessman look:D ( not that I'm a businessman of any sort :lol )

Once again, awesome thread. Got a nice collection there OnkelC:)

Just got another watch for Christmas....my wife gave me this one (obviously a stock photo):
2957cd2.jpg

mine is number 04900, which I like a lot, because not only does it have a 00, but 49 is 7^2, so the way I figure it, I'm like two James Bonds duct taped together!...backwards...

These two were in the finals, but the Omega won out due to its mechanics. Have to admit, the Oris is a rather sexy skeleton. And the Breguet is classy, though I'm not a huge fan of yellow gold.

First tragedy, then farce.
Got a new watch today. I don't really wear watches often enough mostly because the only watch I have I can't afford to break (Tag Heuer Monte Carlo).. anyway, I picked up this today, it was on sale for 110 (about 200 face). It's Kenneth Cole which I have been told has good mechanics for the price range and it looks very nice (I like skeletons)

I think it's a pretty nice watch and one that I can afford to wear to work everyday. I've started trying to dress up a bit at work because layoffs are probably coming and I don't want to be the weakest link. Suits are a bit of a no no, but I've been wearing my class ring, cuff links and a vest most days and figure a nice watch would add to it a bit.

If the Bob's show up, I want to look like a winner :lol

Hi guys, I'm looking into getting a watch to complement my outfits for both business and going out (bars/clubs). I've found these two so far and was wondering if you guys could give me some opinions between these:

http://www.thewatchery.com/ESQ-07301079-Watch-10739.htm?

http://www.ashford.com/product_info.php?products_id=14183@Ashford&qid=

I'm also open to other suggestions you guys might have as well. I'm looking for a silver bracelet with a black dial/face. I don't like it being too cluttered, but a well placed (preferabbly symetrical) calendar dial or other dials like the Bulova are welcome as well. My price range is up to $200.

whoa, haven't checked this thread for a while, and so much niche watches on NeoGAF!

keen, congratulations again, very fine timepiece.
robertsan, definitely a unique watch.
The_Joint, impressive collection. What else do you own?
elostyle, looking forward to some action shots!

keep them coming, people!

alexel, you could check out several Seiko models that fit your criteria at that price point. most of them sport really nice designs, and the movement is proven to be a workhorse. Good place to check out the designs is: http://www.chronograph.com

Stowa make some really beautiful watches. I'm quite fond of these actually:

Antea black with date

Antea 390

Partitio

I like the celestial watch as well, but only in a novelty way. I couldn't justify spending $600 on that when I could pick up any of the above Stowa for that.

The Seiko watches are pretty nice, but that website has the worst organization ever (no way to search by price). Is there anything wrong with the two watches I mentioned above or the websites selling them?

nothing wrong with the Bulova, but both sport Quartz movements, which is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

My girlfriend took me to Fossil and I picked out this one. Lots of nice texture and dimension to the dial, which is more of a slightly cream-white than the silver-white in the photo.

Here is mine, I've had it for years:

I'm a big fan of simple watches where you can tell what the time is by glancing at them. I don't want diamonds, 4 dials, barometers or any of that rubbish.

I would like a Mondaine one day:

Ah I understand. I'm guessing you prefer the mechanical movement watches more? I read up about it on wikipedia, but it just mentioned that the mechanical movements weren't as precise as the quartz movements. What is it about whichever type you like that makes it better than quartz movement for you Onkel?

I think watches with loads of complications are neat, but I prefer clean and simple. I would like to own one with a perpetual calendar someday, though.

blurry ass iphone pic of my Omega Seamaster, I got it almost 9 years ago. I love the watch to death and rarely take it off, but seeing some of the watches in here is making me think about picking up another watch or two of varying styles for different occasions. I'm definitely digging the Stowas that have been posted. Very clean and elegant in their design.

No numbers around the face = fail!

Here is the watch I just bought. It's soooo thin and awesome. The band looks like it's nylon, but it's actually finely woven titanium.

Really nifty.

I like this one. I'm trying to decide between the blue face and black face.

I love watches... had a Breitling for a couple of years but I had to pawn it when things got rough :lol I want to get another one but I thought I'll ask this (stupid question) here first: Is there any watch you can buy that doesn't depreciate the moment it leaves the store? Is it possible to buy a watch less than £3000 that would become a collector's item sometime in the future?

Kal, check out Patek Phillipe watches. They are the only watches that I know of that usually appreciate over time.

lots of Omegas lately!

alexel, it's more of a personal preference. the cheapest Quartz movement will be a better timekeeper than the most expensive automatic movement, but they lack the magic of little wheels and springs.

The Seamaster is ten years old, the Speedmaster is younger but it had been exposed to more um physical activity and has some scratches on the bezel.

I was looking to get a Seamaster as a friend of mine works for Omega, but I never found anything I like that would have been worth the price. Maybe in a month or two I'll pick one up.

I'm a big fan of Junkers, not quite in the price bracket of some of the timepieces in this thread though...

Just ordered this for my birthday:

Might get this as well:

This will be the watch I get for my 30th (January 2010), expensive but I've always been fond of it.

I'd be interested in seeing similar watches people might own/know about.
